Een groot modern bouwwerk waar de overblijfselen van Pater Pio rusten De kerk van San Pio da Pietrelcina is het referentiepunt bij uitstek voor toegewijden van Padre Pio, zalig verklaard door Johannes Paulus II in 1999 en drie jaar later door dezelfde paus tot heilige verklaard. De grote kerk, ontworpen door architect Renzo Piano en voltooid in 2004, staat in San Giovanni Rotondo, waar de kapucijnenbroeder stierf na er vele jaren te hebben gewoond. Het imposante gebouw werd gebouwd in opdracht van dezelfde minderjarige kapucijnenbroeders waartoe Pater Pio behoorde. Het doel was om de relieken van de heilige te huisvesten en gemakkelijk de duizenden gelovigen te huisvesten die ervoor kiezen om San Giovanni Rotondo te bezoeken als een pelgrimsbestemming, en hen een bijna mystieke ervaring te bieden. De kerk van San Pio is een groot modern bouwwerk, omgeven door een enorm kerkhof en bestaat uit een bovenkerk, gewijd aan liturgische vieringen, een kleinere benedenkerk en een crypte, die de overblijfselen van de heilige herbergt.
Het Heiligdom van Santa Maria delle Grazie, met zijn klooster, staat bekend als de plaats waar Pater Pio van Pietrelcina woonde en stierf vanaf 28 juli 1916. De bouw van de eerste kerk dateert uit de 15e eeuw; door de toename van bezoekers werd in 1956 begonnen met de bouw van een nieuwe kerk. De oude kerk is rechthoekig met een eenvoudige gevel; van binnen heeft het een enkel schip in barokstijl met vier kapellen gewijd aan heiligen. Het hoogaltaar is voorzien van een houten fresco van de Madonna met Kind, geflankeerd door Sint Johannes de Doper en de Evangelist. De oude kerk van Santa Maria delle Grazie herbergt de urn met de overblijfselen van de martelaar Sint Maximiana, onder een klein altaar. Het klooster omvat de cel van Padre Pio, open voor bezoekers, en de crypte waar zijn lichaam werd bewaard voordat het werd overgebracht naar het nabijgelegen heiligdom, ontworpen door Renzo Piano. Met een rondleiding in het klooster kunt u plaatsen bezoeken die belangrijk zijn voor Padre Pio, zoals de cel en het koor van de oude kerk.
Het Heiligdom van Sint-Michiel de Aartsengel bevindt zich in Monte Sant'Angelo, in de provincie Foggia, en maakt deel uit van het aartsbisdom Manfredonia-Vieste-San Giovanni Rotondo. Het heiligdom bestaat uit een bovenste basiliek, die het Romaanse portaal, de klokkentoren en een lagere basiliek omvat, waaronder de grot waar volgens de traditie de aartsengel Michael verscheen. Het is ook bekend als de Hemelse Basiliek, omdat het wordt verondersteld te zijn ingewijd door de Aartsengel Michael. Absolutely FANTASTIC! Elizabeth was so knowledgeable and helpful. So much more than religious sights. I would book this tour just for the drive through the Italian countryside. Our driver was great. A lot of driving, and we always felt safe and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed everything on the tour. The espresso at the morning pitstop was one of the best on our trip through Italy and France. Later, Elizabeth helped us find a restaurant for lunch and checked in on us to make sure that we didn't need anything. She knew the shops and was able to help guide us find particular items. She and our driver were able to show us points of interest along the way. Very knowledgeable and able to answer questions and provide insights at the sights as well as on the drive without adding her personal opinions or beliefs. (We had a really bad experience at the coloseum with a different tour company.) We told our b&b host to recommend it to his other guests. Truly a highlight of our trip and worth including in your trip!

The trip is very interesting especially if you are Catholic and the guide was very friendly. It is still a new tour for this company so guides are learning. Beware it is a great distance from Rome. The return trip was 4 hours in light traffic. The scenery was beautiful on the ride especially along east coast of Italy

The day trip from picking us up at the hotel and taking us to Father Pio and the cave of St. Michael the Archangel tour, and bring us back to the hotel... is a tour I will never forget.
