Otavalo is een van de beroemdste inheemse beurzen van het land; hoewel de markt op zaterdag meer activiteit heeft, is deze elke dag open met een indrukwekkende verscheidenheid aan handwerk, wandtapijten en weven gemaakt door de inheemse bevolking van de omliggende dorpen. Ondertussen testen toeristen hun Spaans en onderhandelingsvaardigheden bij kraampjes die kleurrijke en goedkope gebreide truien, mutsen, handschoenen en nog veel meer verkopen.

Rijdend ten noorden van Quito is de beroemdste inheemse markt van Ecuador: Otavalo, vol tradities en handwerk. Na de route volgt u Cayambe, zeer bekend bij de lokale bevolking vanwege de zoutkoekjes genaamd Bizcocho, die meestal worden geserveerd met lokale kaas en melkkaramel. Als u vervolgens naar het noorden rijdt, kunt u een mooi meer waarderen met op de achtergrond een majestueuze Imabura-vulkaan. Eindelijk arriveer je in de stad Otavalo, waar de lokale markt is gevestigd. Als je de markt ten volle wilt zien, bezoek dan op een zaterdag of woensdag. Sommige typische items zijn te vinden, zoals handgemaakte textiel, keramiek, hout, zilver, leer en metalen producten.
De laatste stop van de dag is Cotacachi, op slechts 10 minuten afstand van Otavalo, een stad die bekend staat om zijn lederwaren met echt geweldige leren jassen en tassen. In de middag is het tijd om terug te rijden naar Quito.

Our private trip to Otavalo market was amazing. Our guide Javier was super friendly and knowledgeable about everywhere we stopped. I was expecting to just travel to the market and back to Quito but Javier stopped at a beautiful viewpoint overlooking a volcano and at a rose stand on the way. The time at the market was just enough to enjoy (without spending too much money!) and then he took us to a nearby park and waterfall. Lunch is not included but the restaurant he took us to was very reasonably priced and delicious. Our last stop was at a bird rescue where he told us all about the native Ecuadorian condors. Overall we had a great (and tiring day) and enjoyed it all. We would definitely book it again!

This was a great day trip! Our guide was very helpful, kind, and full of interesting information about the area and history. He knew both English and Spanish fluently. This was a pet-friendly excursion. We were in a large van that comfortably accommodated us and our medium sized dog. Both the driver and the guide were flexible, considerate, and interested in ensuring we had the best time! If you can afford the private tour, well worth doing. The market is amazing and a visit to the local weaving factory equally unusual. Good stops.
