Halverwege tussen Lazio en Toscane vinden we Orvieto, een klein stadje in Umbrië. Hoewel het deel van de stad aan de oppervlakte in de loop van de tijd is veranderd, is de oorspronkelijke ondergrondse structuur grotendeels intact gebleven. De rondleiding door Orvieto Underground is daarom het meest geschikte hulpmiddel om in contact te komen met dit zeer karakteristieke kenmerk van de stad, buitengewoon rijk aan geschiedenis en met zeer opmerkelijke artistieke "juwelen". Stap voor stap vertellen mysterieuze en fascinerende echo's ons over de Etruskische tijd, terwijl fantomen van de middeleeuwen en de renaissance uit de vochtige schaduwen opduiken. De prachtige gevel van de kathedraal van Orvieto behoort tot de beste ter wereld Wat betreft decoratie en het interieur, geschilderd door Luca Signorelli. Zelfs voor meesters als Michelangelo was het een inspiratiebron. Voordat Michelangelo de Sixtijnse Kapel begon te schilderen, ging hij naar Orvieto om te bewonderen hoe Luca Signorelli de hemel en de hel in de kathedraal schilderde. Orvieto is een stad en gemeente in de provincie Terni, zuidwestelijk Umbrië, Italië gelegen op de vlakke top van een grote butte van vulkanische tufsteen. De stad stijgt dramatisch uit boven de bijna verticale vlakken van tufkliffen die worden voltooid door verdedigingsmuren die zijn gebouwd met dezelfde steen die Tufa wordt genoemd.
Civita di Bagnoregio werd meer dan 2500 jaar geleden opgericht door Etruscans. De Civita (of stad) was de geboorteplaats van de heilige Bonaventure, die stierf in 1274. De locatie van zijn jeugdhuis is al lang geleden van de rand van de klif gevallen. Tegen de 16e eeuw begon Civita di Bagnoregio te vervallen en werd overschaduwd door de voormalige buitenwijk Bagnoregio. Aan het einde van de 17e eeuw moesten de bisschop en het gemeentebestuur naar Bagnoregio verhuizen vanwege een grote aardbeving die de achteruitgang van de oude stad versnelde. In die tijd maakte het gebied deel uit van de pauselijke staten. In de 19e eeuw veranderde de locatie van Civita di Bagnoregio in een eiland en werd het tempo van de erosie versneld toen de laag klei onder de steen werd bereikt in het gebied waar de brug van vandaag ligt. Bagnoregio gaat verder als een kleine maar welvarende stad, terwijl de oudere site in het Italiaans bekend werd als La città che muore ("The Dying Town"). Civita di Bagnoregio beleeft pas sinds kort een toeristische opleving.

A fantastic trip. The driver was pleasant and professional. He provided great service. The guide was knowledgeable and easy to understand. The locations were amazing. I highly recommend this tour.
The scenery is very beautiful, the whole journey is comfortable and comfortable, the time and itinerary are well coordinated, the driver and tour guide are experienced, and the driving is safe. If you need private space and comfortable travel, this itinerary is definitely a good choice
We did 7 tours with AIM Limo. Hard pressed to choose the best one. Each was a unique opportunity to be immersed in Italian culture. The scenery, food, information on each area was unbelievable. Alessandro and Evano were wonderful to work with. They arrived early each day to get us and never made us feel rushed. They were very knowledgeable about each area we visited. We also used them for our airport transfers. I would highly recommend them for touring around Rome…the Vatican, Colosseum, etc….but you must schedule a day trip with them “off the beaten path”. Their prices are reasonable and the experience extraordinary!
The suggestion to go to unique destinations and venues, that tourists would never even know about was phenomenal. Thank you Allessandro and Ivano! It was heavy rain on the way. There was thunder and it kept raining so much that I thought of going back to Rome, but when I arrived, the rain was flip-flopping and clouds were hanging over Civita, like the whole city was floating. It was like a river on three sides, crossing a single bridge hidden in the clouds all the way. It was a fantastic experience. It was sunny on the way back, and I was able to experience a sunny Civita. It's a wonderful place to be. It will definitely be an impressive day.
We spent the day touring with Alessandro, he escorted us on our tour and made some very good recommendations. Would not hesitate to use their tour service again. If you are concerned about the cost, it's worth it. It's way better than a tour bus, I have had that experience on prior vacations. Pick your tour, pay the cost and relax and enjoy Italy. RJD
It's a lovely tour, a city with beautiful landscapes that suddenly appear when you drive around and you can go around slowly without thinking about the people around you.
This was our fourth visit to Rome, so we were ready for some new adventures. We had an incredible day; Livio was prompt and a pleasure. He had great insights, was personable and fun to get to know, and even taught us a few things about agriculture in the area. We had a wonderful day; I would highly recommend this trip, this company, and this driver.
This was simply the most amazing trip. I really enjoyed seeing Civita di Bagnoregio more than anything else I saw in Italy. Admittedly, I had been to Italy once before and seen the big "must sees", so if you haven't been, maybe Civita is not where you want to start, but as a person who loves the road less traveled, this was TOPS - literally. This little city is situated seemingly at the top of the world. Our driver, Davide, was friendly and knowledgeable. His English was very good and he helped me along with my very poor Italian. He had a broad knowledge of the area philosophies, flora and fauna, history, customs, and food- which we talked about at length while he drove. We were free to roam the sites at both stops, so there was not a tour of Civita or Orvieto per se, but just strolling through these marvels was entertainment enough. Wonderful day trip from Rome!
