Deze 3 uur durende tour verkent de overgebleven monumenten van het Oost-Duitse regime, waaronder de beruchte Berlijnse Muur en het hoofdkwartier van Stasi. Een historicus zal de dialoog onthullen tussen de moderne gebouwde omgeving van Berlijn en zijn donkere en vaak verborgen geschiedenis. Je hoort over het leven onder communistische heerschappij, de groeiende ontevredenheid van de Oost-Duitsers en de wrede onderdrukking door hun regering.

Een historicus zal de dialoog onthullen tussen de moderne omgeving van Berlijn en zijn donkere en vaak verborgen geschiedenis. Je zult horen over het leven onder communistische heerschappij, de groeiende ontevredenheid van de Oost-Duitsers en de brutale onderdrukking van hun regering. De tour begint bij de Brandenburger Tor, waar president Ronald Reagan in juni 1987 beroemd de Sovjet-premier Michail Gorbatsjov opriep om 'deze muur af te breken!' Vlakbij ligt de voormalige Sovjet-ambassade, een grandioos monument gebouwd in 1945 te midden van het puin van de wereld Oorlog II als een gedurfde verklaring van Stalins ambitie om heel Berlijn te beheersen. We zullen bespreken hoe de naoorlogse divisie van Duitsland door de geallieerden in vier delen leidde tot tientallen jaren van koude spanningen.
Station Friedrichstrasse, een belangrijk kruispunt tussen Oost- en West-Berlijn. Toen gezinnen uit elkaar werden gerukt door de ironische immigratiewetten van Oost-Duitsland, namen ze hun trieste afscheid hier in het kantoor dat bekend staat als het Palace of Tears.
Op Nordbahnhof zullen we onderzoeken hoe de divisie van Berlijn "spook" -stations creëerde, ongebruikte maar zwaar bewaakte haltes op de metrolijnen van West-Berlijn die op Oost-Duits grondgebied lagen.
We bezoeken het grandioze kilometerslange wooncomplex dat bekend staat als Karl Marx Allee en overwegen hoe de dromen van Oost-Duitsers voor een socialistisch paradijs veranderden in een nachtmerrie van ontbering, onderdrukking en paranoia.
Met het monument van de Berlijnse muur kun je de beruchte Death Strip ervaren en verhalen horen over Oost-Berlijners wier pogingen om te ontsnappen tot hun tragische dood leidden.
De geheime politie van Oost-Duitsland, de beruchte Stasi, dwong buren en familieleden elkaar te bespioneren. Op het voormalige hoofdkantoor van Stasi zul je leren hoe zijn gevreesde leider Eric Mielke een enorm netwerk van spionnen rekruteerde en innovatieve bewakingstechnieken creëerde.
We zullen het centrum van het openbare leven in Oost-Berlijn bezoeken, Alexanderplatz, dat in de jaren 1960 werd herbouwd met monumenten zoals het futuristische parlementsgebouw en de iconische tv-toren. In 1989 vormde dit symbool van Oost-Duitse trots de setting voor massale demonstraties die leidden tot de ondergang van het regime en een einde maakten aan 40 jaar communistische heerschappij.

Our wonderful guide Dan masterfully presented the history of Berlin's division during the Cold War in an interesting but also humorous way which completely captured the attention of our 13 year old budding history buff. It was an amazing tour and we covered a lot in the span of time allotted. Definitely would recommend to anyone interested in history, art and architecture of the city.

This tour was the highlight of a 5-day stay in Berlin. It was intimate and conversational. We chose the tour for the small size and, exactly as we hoped, we got to ask loads of questions and learn what we specifically cared about. We were also very moved by our guide's personal stories of his in-law's family's life behind the iron curtain and by the ghost stations.

Martin was great, so engaging, answering all our questons. He lived through divided Berlin and was able to offer a very personal account of the iron curtain in addition to his helping us grasp the monuments but also subtle, small things in the city. We would have missed so many signs of the former separation if he hadn't been with us. Great host and storyteller.
The Berlin of today as only the faintest scar of the actual division of the the city. It's more like a commercial memory. This tour really shed light not only on the jarring juxtaposition of life in the former East vs West Berlin, but gave me a clearer understanding of what it must have been like growing on one side of the wall or the other.

Historically, Berlin is multilayered and dense. Effortlessly informed guide. Respect for objective facts. Arduous when you're standing for 3 hours but definitely worth it; we had lunch beforehand and a place to go afterward.
