Dit is een prachtige en levendige hindoeïstische tempel (of Kovil) gewijd aan Heer Ganesha, de godheid met olifantenkop die wordt vereerd als de Verwijderaar van Obstakels en de God van Wijsheid. Architectuur : Het beschikt over een opvallend kleurrijke gopuram in Dravidische stijl (ingangstoren) versierd met ingewikkelde sculpturen en beelden van verschillende hindoeïstische goden en godinnen. Betekenis : Het dient als een vitale plaats van aanbidding voor de lokale hindoegemeenschap, als weerspiegeling van Negombo's rijke multireligieuze erfgoed. The Experience : Bezoekers kunnen naar binnen stappen om de serene, spirituele sfeer te ervaren, het gedetailleerde kunstwerk te bewonderen en getuige te zijn van de dagelijkse rituelen met bloemen, wierook en lampen.
⛪ Sint-Mariakerk (Maha Veediya Palliya) Negombo staat bekend als "Klein Rome", en deze majestueuze kerk is het middelpunt van die reputatie. Het is een van de grootste kathedralen in Sri Lanka en een prachtige mix van Europese neoklassieke stijl met Sri Lankaanse kunst. Architectuur : De kerk werd gebouwd tussen 1874 en 1922 en heeft een grote, torenhoge gevel en massieve zuilen. Het Interieur Hoogtepunt : Het meest bekende kenmerk is het adembenemende plafond, dat is bedekt met levendige fresco's en schilderijen die het leven van Christus en verschillende heiligen uitbeelden. Wat deze kunst echt uniek maakt, is dat het plafondwerk werd gedaan door een lokale boeddhistische schilder, N.S. Godamanne, die Sri Lanka's culturele harmonie laat zien. Negombo vismarkt & droge visvelden De Negombo Vismarkt, plaatselijk bekend als Lellama, is een chaotisch, kleurrijk en authentiek stukje van het lokale leven. Het is een van de grootste en meest dynamische vismarkten op het eiland. De markt : Best vroeg in de ochtend (rond 06:00 uur) bezocht om vissers hun verse vangsten van tonijn, krab, garnalen en diverse rifvissen te zien lossen. Het is een levendig, luidruchtig en bruisend spektakel dat een rauw kijkje biedt in de visserij-economie van Sri Lanka. De Dry Fish Fields : Net voorbij de natte markt ligt het zonovergoten gebied waar grote delen van de vangst van de dag - vooral kleine vissen en grote, gesneden stukken - in de open lucht worden gelegd, een traditionele conserveringsmethode. Dit veld zorgt voor een krachtig, uniek aroma en is een visueel opvallend gezicht tegen de blauwe lucht en het zand. Dit gebied toont het hart van Negombo's identiteit als een klassieke kust vissersstad.
Negombo Nederlands Fort (Oud Fort) Het Nederlandse Fort Negombo is een historische plek die de rol van de stad in de koloniale geschiedenis van Sri Lanka markeert, en was een belangrijke handelspost voor kaneel en specerijen. Geschiedenis : Oorspronkelijk opgericht door de Portugees, werd het later veroverd en herbouwd door de Nederlands in de 17e eeuw. Huidige staat : In tegenstelling tot het uitgestrekte fort in Galle werd een groot deel van de oorspronkelijke structuur in Negombo in de late 19e eeuw door de Britten afgebroken om de nabijgelegen gevangenis te bouwen. Tegenwoordig kunnen bezoekers de bewaard gebleven hoofdpoort en enkele delen van de muur zien. Betekenis : Hoewel er alleen nog overblijfselen over zijn, biedt de site een kijkje in de architectuur van het koloniale tijdperk en het strategische belang van de kustlocatie van Negombo.
Nederlands kanaal in Negombo, officieel bekend als het Hamiltonkanaal, is een fascinerende historische waterweg die dient als een levende verbinding met het koloniale verleden van Sri Lanka en de lokale vissersgemeenschap. Het kanaal loopt ongeveer 14,5 kilometer (9 mijl), verbindt Puttalam met Colombo en loopt dwars door Negombo, waar het aansluit op de Negombo Lagoon.
Angurukaramulla Tempel, officieel bekend als Bodhirajaramaya, is een van Negombo's meest gerenommeerde en historisch belangrijke boeddhistische sites. Het wordt geroemd om zijn ongelooflijk kleurrijke en sierlijke architectuur, met name de uitgebreide muurschilderingen en sculpturen.

Wacht bij de ingang of poort van het hotel. Op de tuk-tuk zal het "Jayasri Tuk Tuk Tours Negombo Sri Lanka" logo aan beide zijden worden weergegeven. Wees buiten en duidelijk zichtbaar op het moment van ophalen; wacht niet in de lobby, omdat de chauffeur meestal niet het voertuig kan verlaten om u te zoeken.

Had a great time and was taken to enough places. Great selection of sites from temples to fish market. The length of time was ample and Atula had a sarong for us to use. We should have realised and wore knee length skirts.

Absolutely brilliant tour guide, very knowledgeable and polite. Provided ice cold water for free. Took us to some stunning churches and temples, and to the famous fish market ( be prepared for strong smells, luckily I'm from Grimsby so the smell of fish didn't bother me). The tour guide didn't pressure us or take us to anywhere we didn't want to go and even offered to take us to an ATM and a supermarket to buy rice (as my phone succumbed to the 95% humidity so needed drying out). Great value for money definitely recommended and will use again.
