This was hands down one of the best museums I’ve ever been to. It was like an art museum combined with history combined with lore. Each room had so much in it and so many little cubbies and hidey holes with cool things in it. The art is astounding, the stories are fun, and the museum is wonderful. A must-go for in Zagreb!

Step into a world You colud never imagine - I was TOTALY thrilled with all the amazing details and stories in the Museum of the old legends and fairytales! Must visit!
After saying this visit wasn’t for me, I was soon proved wrong!!! It’s a must visit and do spend a good hour there .. our first circuit of 7 rooms was slightly rushed but we opted to go round again and saw so many clever, interesting things. Silhouettes, images and puppets along with some video footage added to the story which at times was slightly spooky. And yes I would revisit again.
Brilliant museum, loved it . Very goth . Loved the art work. I went round 3 times as easy to miss something. Even my husband thought it was great. Well worth a visit.
A beautifully put together museum of Croatian mythology and folklore with signage in English to explain the background of it all. We decided against the audio guide and enjoyed the amazing artwork and modelling of various legends in individual rooms. There were drawers and cupboards to explore and dome great stained glass window effects too. Worth a visit if you are at a loose end

An amazing museum. You will learn tales and legends through interactive qr codes and staging that immerses you in a mystical universe. Only regret, audio texts read and translated by bad A.I. Real recorded routes that give off emotions would be ideal given the care taken at the place.
This felt more like an art exhibit inspired by folklore than a true museum. There are a handful of highly themed roomed with some admittedly very cool sculptures. Unfortunately, any artistic merit is cheapened by the extensive use of AI “art”, used both for the wallpaper and every single depiction of the folklore creatures. Frankly, if you can’t be bothered to create it yourself, you shouldn’t charge people to see it. The exhibit is marketed as interactive because there are several doors/drawers that guests can open and peer into. Most of these feel like after thoughts and get quite repetitive (most of them just have a skull and a handful of pebbles). The audio tour is a mess: it doesn’t follow any clear order, is way too long and wordy, and overall just kind of boring and confusing. Worse yet, the English audio guide we paid extra for just reads the placards out word for word, which made us a little cheated. I suspect both the audio guide and placards may have used AI as well. On paper, this museum sounds really cool. I love folklore, themed experiences, and atmospheric horror-adjacent stuff. If anyone was gonna love it, it was me. There are so many amazing museums in Zagreb, this is not one of them.

None of the creature illustrations or visual artworks in the museum were created using AI. All illustrations were created by Croatian artist Zdenko Bašić, one of Croatia’s best-known illustrators and multimedia artists, who has spent more than 20 years researching and artistically interpreting folklore, mythology, and oral traditions. His books can also be seen in our souvenir shop, and his work has been published internationally. Suggesting that the artwork is AI-generated unintentionally dismisses decades of work by a real artist. Regarding the museum itself, you are correct that our concept differs from that of a traditional museum filled with display cases and historical artifacts. The Museum of Lost Tales was intentionally created as an immersive interpretive space, somewhere between a museum, storytelling installation, and artistic experience, with the goal of preserving intangible cultural heritage such as folktales, beliefs, and oral traditions. As for the audio guide and the narrative structure, this was also a deliberate curatorial choice. Traditional folklore and oral storytelling rarely follow a simple linear narrative with a clear beginning, middle, and end. In fact, such structured storytelling is more characteristic of literary fairytales, which are typically authored by a specific writer and intentionally shaped into a linear narrative. Folklore, by contrast, is collective and oral in nature. Folktales, myths, beliefs, and fragments of oral tradition often survive as interconnected motifs, symbols, warnings, and recurring themes passed down across generations rather than as one continuous storyline. Because of that, the audio guide was intentionally not designed as a strictly sequential experience, but rather as a layered exploration that allows visitors to discover and connect stories in their own way. We understand that this format may not resonate with every visitor, and we appreciate your feedback. And I've seen dozens of museums. This space is new and was inaugurated in October 2024. The venue is dedicated to the legends of Croatian folklore and it is evident that those involved in this work did their homework very well, since virtually all the many dozen legends of Croatian folklore are represented in this museum. The graphic works of art are amazing and the sculptures are memorable. It is undeniable, however, that the owner of this place is a fan of the filmmaker Tim Burton, since the museum rooms clearly have a theme that goes from the Gothic, goes through the dark and always presents luminous and desolative scenery, with many peculiar and unique creatures. Certainly, the owner of this museum deserves to get rich, because the place is really sensational!
