Het museum eert de nagedachtenis van de 29 Uruguayanen die in 1972 in de Andes omkwamen, toen hun vliegtuig op weg van Montevideo naar Santiago de Chile neerstortte. Deze tentoonstelling is ook opgedragen aan de16 man, die "weer tot leven kwam" na 72 helse dagen onder de slechtst denkbare omstandigheden te hebben doorstaan. (zie film en / of boek: "Alive") De tentoonstelling bevat foto's, documenten, persoonlijke bezittingen en vliegtuigresten, naast andere relevante items. Een tijdlijn geeft een dagelijks overzicht van de gebeurtenissen die plaatsvonden in de "Valley of Tears", gedurende die nooit eindigende 72 dagen.

Het museum is gevestigd in een 19e-eeuws gebouw in het historische stadscentrum van Montevideo, dat tot nationaal erfgoed is verklaard. De tentoonstelling bevat onder andere foto's, documenten, persoonlijke bezittingen en vliegtuigresten. Een tijdlijn geeft een dagelijks verslag van de gebeurtenissen die plaatsvonden in de "Valley of Tears", evenals van belangrijke gebeurtenissen die tegelijkertijd plaatsvonden in andere delen van de wereld, tijdens die eindeloze 72 dagen. 400 vierkante meter, 40 tweetalige panelen, 30 kasten, verschillende schermen en originele debries, laten je alle relevante feiten zien over dit unieke overlevingsverhaal. Beautiful experience. I went to spend my birthday in Montevideo and chose this city mainly to go and see the Museum. It's very complete and exciting to be there.
The exhibition is impacting. You can feel the suffering, despair and the terrible cold that the survivors faced. But with their strength, unity, and courage they went in search of a miracle! I cried a lot reading the letters to the family, makes us reflect a lot, how fragile life is!
It is a museum that explains in great detail what the survivors and the deceased experienced in the tragedy of the Andes. The stories, the wreckage of the plane, the personal belongings... everything that's on site is really moving. Also everything dedicated to the Chilean muleteer who was the first to find them. Rarely when you go to a museum do you experience so many emotions.
Even if you are not familiar with this incredible story of the 1972 plane crash & survival in the Andes this museum is well worth a visit. I read 'Alive' by Piers Paul Read in my early twenties so I knew a lot of what transpired. The exhibits are excellent & there are so many personal items belonging to the crash survivors as well. In the basement there is a chamber that re-creates the temperatures the crash victims experienced during their enforced stay on the mountain. Well worth a visit
