Rijd af met uw gids Na een uur durende boottocht van de Gateway of India naar Elephanta Island, verken de prachtige grotten. De buitenste grotten werden gebruikt als een plaats van hindoe-aanbidding totdat de Portugese heerschappij werd gevestigd. De grotten verderop zijn kleiner en zijn boeddhistische grotten. De belangrijkste grot, ook wel de Shiva-grot genoemd, bevat talloze gravures die verschillende aspecten van Lord Shiva weergeven, waaronder zijn bruiloft, zijn moord op Andhaka en meer. Er zal ook een sculptuur van de Trimurti in de grote grot zijn die ongeveer 20 voet lang is. Andere vleugels van de grotten hebben heiligdommen gewijd aan Shiva's zonen, Kartikeya en Ganesh. Boek en verken dit UNESCO-werelderfgoed met een gids uit Gharapuri, een klein dorpje aan de zuidkant van het eiland.
De Gateway of India is een boogmonument dat in de 20e eeuw in Mumbai is gebouwd. Het monument werd opgericht ter nagedachtenis aan de landing van koning-keizer George V en koningin-keizerin Maria in Apollo Bunder tijdens hun bezoek aan India in 1911.
