We beginnen onze tour vroeg in de ochtend van Athene tot Meteora. Onze chauffeur haalt u op bij uw hotel/appartement of de luchthaven/haven. De reistijd is ongeveer 4,5 uur.
Kalabaka is een stad en zetel van de gemeente Meteora in de regionale eenheid Trikala, een deel van Thessalië in Griekenland. De bevolking was 12.000 bij de telling van 2011, waarvan 8.330 in de eigenlijke stad. De Meteora-kloosters bevinden zich in de buurt van de stad.
We komen aan bij Meteora en bezoeken maximaal drie kloosters. Adembenemend op de eerste plaats, de kloosters zijn van groot cultureel en natuurlijk belang. Afgesplitst van aardbevingen, verweerd door de wind en het water gedurende miljoenen miljoenen jaren, zijn deze immense rotsen een authentiek meesterwerk van moeder natuur. De Meteora is een rotsformatie in Centraal-Griekenland die een van de grootste en meest steil gebouwde complexen van oosters-orthodoxe kloosters herbergt. De zes (van de oorspronkelijke 24) kloosters zijn gebouwd op immense natuurlijke pilaren en heuvelachtige ronde rotsblokken die de omgeving domineren. Meteora is opgenomen op de UNESCO Werelderfgoedlijst en de naam betekent "verheven", "verheven", en is etymologisch verwant aan meteoor. Gelieve bescheiden gekleed te zijn. Vrouwen wordt aangeraden lange rokken en lange mouwen te dragen. Heb je die niet, dan krijg je bij binnenkomst een rokje mee.
Vrije tijd voor lunch in een traditionele Griekse taverne met je vrienden en familie of winkelen in Kastraki, een pittoresk dorpje in de buurt van Meteora.
Thermopylae is een plaats in Griekenland waar in de oudheid een smalle kustdoorgang bestond. Het ontleent zijn naam aan de hete zwavelbronnen. In de Griekse mythologie is de Hete Poort een van de toegangen tot Hades. Thermopylae is de plaats van een strijd tussen de Griekse strijdkrachten en de binnenvallende Perzische strijdkrachten, herdacht door Simonides van Ceos in het beroemde grafschrift: "Ga de Spartanen vertellen, vreemdelingen die voorbij komen, dat we hier liggen, gehoorzaam aan hun wetten." Thermopylae is de enige landroute die groot genoeg is om significant verkeer tussen Lokris en Thessalië te dragen. Om van noord naar zuid langs de oostkust van het Balkan-schiereiland te gaan, moet je de pas gebruiken, en daarom is Thermopylae het toneel geweest van verschillende veldslagen.
Laten we, terwijl we de magnifieke Meteora achter ons laten, de Slag bij Thermopylae van 480 v. Het monument van de Grote Leonidas, koning van Sparta, in Thermopylae, zal ons pad sieren op onze weg terug naar Athene in de late namiddag. Thermopylae is wereldberoemd vanwege de strijd die daar plaatsvond tussen de Griekse strijdkrachten (met name de Spartanen, Lakedemoniërs, Thebanen en Thespiërs) en de binnenvallende Perzische strijdkrachten, herdacht door Simonides in het beroemde grafschrift: "Ga de Spartanen vertellen, vreemdeling die voorbij komt ,,Dat we hier gehoorzaam aan hun wetten liegen."
Leonidas was een koning van de Griekse stadstaat Sparta, en de 17e van de Agiad-linie, een dynastie die afstamde van de mythologische halfgod Heracles en Cadmus. Leonidas was de zoon van koning Anaxandridas II. Hij volgde zijn halfbroer koning Cleomenes I op de troon in c. 489 voor Christus. Leonidas had een opmerkelijke deelname aan de Tweede Perzische Oorlog, waar hij de geallieerde Griekse troepen naar een laatste stand leidde in de Slag bij Thermopylae (480 v.Chr.) terwijl hij probeerde de pas te verdedigen tegen het binnenvallende Perzische leger; hij stierf tijdens de slag en ging de mythe binnen als de leider van de 300 Spartanen. Terwijl de Grieken deze strijd verloren, waren ze in staat om de Perzische indringers in het volgende jaar te verdrijven.
We beginnen laat in de middag aan onze terugweg naar Athene. De rit is ongeveer 4,5 uur.

Great experience, it’s a journey but completely worth it. You’ll never see anything like it, our tour guide Nick was fantastic, it’s a good 4 hour drive from Athens, you definitely get a quick stop on the way there and back, we were able to do 2 of the monasteries, then to a look out that has the most amazing views perfect for photos! We had lunch at a Tavern that was delicious. Then the journey back, it’s a full day but so worth it. Pack some snacks and water and go enjoy a drive through beautiful Greece and learn about the scenery.

Best tour of our entire Greece trip! The private driver “Mike” was wonderful, full of knowledge, fun and great with our young two boys on the trip. Navigating through crazy Athens traffic like a pro and out to the monastery’s on the scenic highway I felt we were in great hands with a real professional, I’ve been on some trips in other counties where I would be on the edge of my seat worried the time about going so far and back, Mike made this trip from start to finish so relaxing and at the end I felt like we were all family. Would highly recommend if making a full day of going to see the monasteries on the tops of mountains you request Mike as your guide and chauffeur!!!

This is the best way to experience Meteora and is well worth the extra cost of a private tour. Our guide Mike was fantastic! He was very professional, accommodating and incredibly knowledgeable on the historical and current aspects of the trip. Mike provided us with great tips and suggestions for visiting each monastery that saved us time and allowed us to enjoy our experience to the fullest. We really enjoyed spending the day with our wonderful driver, Alex. We couldn’t have had a better experience. Alex was professional, courteous, and knowledgeable on Greek history and had an impressive collection of music to entertain us on the drive. We also stopped at the Battle of thermopylae Museum and Memorial on the way to Meteora. Pictures don’t do justice to the sights of the monasteries. We were so impressed by Alex that we scheduled a tour to the Temple of Poseidon with him for the next day. I highly recommend My Athens Transfers.
