De Meteora, die op de werelderfgoedlijst staat, is een buitengewone plek, een bewijs van het harmonieuze samenleven van mens en natuur. Verreweg de beste manier om de kracht van de natuurlijke krachten die dit adembenemende landschap hebben gevormd, te waarderen, is erin te wandelen. Fantastische manifestaties van de geologische geschiedenis en huidige natuurprocessen wachten op je rond elke bocht of stijging in het pad. Ze vertegenwoordigen een unieke artistieke prestatie en zijn een van de krachtigste voorbeelden van de architecturale transformatie van een site tot een plek van retraite, meditatie en gebed. We zullen ook een bezoek brengen aan Kalambaka, de stad die de nadering van de Meteora bewaakt, door de nazi's in WO II platgebrand is en nu bijna volledig recent gebouwd is. Hoewel het op zichzelf niet bijzonder aantrekkelijk is, bevindt het zich op een prachtige locatie direct voor enkele gigantische rotsformaties.

Meteora, een plaats beroemd om zijn natuurlijke schoonheid en zijn kloosters gelegen aan de rand, zult u onder de indruk zijn van de prachtige reis. Meteora bestaat uit een complex van enorme donkere zandstenen rotsen die boven Kalampaka uitstijgen (lijst van werelderfgoedsites van UNESCO). De gemiddelde houding is 313m. De vorming van zijn geologische landschap, heeft soms geologen beziggehouden, maar het is niet opgehelderd. Het is opmerkelijk dat het in de Griekse mythologie niet is vermeld door oude Grieken of door buitenlandse historici. Dit wilde en ontoegankelijke landschap is een goede plek geweest voor de christelijke eremieten die zich daar vestigden volgens de Byzantinologen van de elfde eeuw.
Het klooster van Grote Meteoron is een oosters-orthodox klooster dat deel uitmaakt van het Meteora-kloostercomplex in Thessalië, centraal Griekenland. Het is gelegen op de top van een rots genaamd Meteora of Platylithos, die 415 meter boven de Pineios-vallei ligt. Het klooster werd in de 14e eeuw gesticht door Athanasius de Meteoriet.
Het klooster van St. Varlaam is een oosters-orthodox klooster dat deel uitmaakt van het Meteora-kloostercomplex in Thessalië, centraal Griekenland. Het ligt op de top van een rotsachtige afgrond die 373 meter boven de vallei ligt. De Drakengrot bevindt zich in het zuiden, onder het klooster. In het oosten zijn vandaag de ruïnes van Kelarakia Rock te zien. De cel van Sint-Paulus de Apostel kan waarschijnlijk worden geïdentificeerd met Kelarakia.
Het klooster van Agios Stefanos, ook bekend als St. Stephen, is het meest toegankelijke van alle Meteora-kloosters. Bezoekers kunnen de ingang gemakkelijk bereiken door een kleine brug over te steken, waardoor het een ideale bestemming is voor mensen met mobiliteitsproblemen.
Kalampaka is in heel Griekenland en de wereld bekend vanwege de beroemde kloosters die op de top van de rotsen van de Meteora aan de noordoostkant ervan staan. Jaarlijks komen miljoenen bezoekers van over de hele wereld om hen te bewonderen en te eren. Kalampaka is een stad met een rijke geschiedenis en belangrijke monumenten. Hier kunt u traditioneel eten en genieten van het prachtige uitzicht op de kloosters.

We thoroughly enjoyed the full-day tour of Meteora, the half-day tour of Athens, and the airport transportation services. Our host, Mariana, was exceptional—she kept in touch regularly with updates, checked in on us throughout our stay, and even helped arrange an additional tour in Santorini through another agency. Canadian Railways Trip of a Lifetime - Eastbound I flew into Vancouver and was booked at the Fairmont Vancouver Hotel. I was given a private tour of Vancouver by Carol who was delightful and showed me the coolest places in Vancouver. I took the Rocky Mountaineer from Vancouver to Kamloops where we spent the night and the next day went to Banff. The train hosts gave us a lot of interesting information along the way. The Rocky Mountaineer is a super fun train. Seats are comfy and the food and wine are excellent. In Banff, I was given a tour by Duncan (I reviewed Alberta Land & Sea in another post). The Banff tour included a gondola ride. Duncan was my guide from Banff through Lake Louise, to Jasper. Part of it is walking on the Athabasca Glacier. From Jasper, we were on VIA railways for 3 nights, to Toronto. Learning the train was fun and the attendants were all very pleasant. The VIA train from Sainte Foy to Halifax was overnight and quite comfortable to me, anyway. Toronto included a private tour and trip to Niagara Falls with Roy, who was delightful. I learned that Niagara is wine country but the growing season is May-October. The Okenagan Valley near Kamloops, is also wine country. I learned about Canadian wines on this trip and they are really nice. After the tour I went to the CN tower and saw fabulous views of the city. The next train ride, VIA, was from Toronto to Montreal. Sadly, Montreal was experiencing poor air quality from the Manitoba fires but I still had a great time, there. Sebastian and the driver, Momo, were patient and friendly. Union Station was across the street from the hotel (Bonaventure) which made it easy. From Montreal, The trip from Montreal to Quebec City (also VIA) was a treat and, again, I had a great guide, Marcel Maranda, who was full of information. All in all, the trip was wonderful. I recommend it to anyone. All the hotels and train rides, and private tours were very well organized. It really was the trip of a lifetime.
