Great Meteoron of Megalo Meteoron is het grootste en oudste klooster van allemaal in Meteora. Het klooster biedt een prachtig uitzicht op het omringende landschap. Tijdens uw bezoek heeft u de kans om het museum van het klooster te bezoeken, waar historische codices en religieuze iconen van hoge waarde te zien zijn. Neem bovendien de tijd om de artistieke details te bekijken van enkele van de beste voorbeelden van post-Byzantijnse kunst van Griekenland, te vinden in de hoofdkerk van het klooster.
Het Heilige Klooster van Varlaam is het op één na grootste klooster van Meteora. Het ligt zeer dicht bij het Great Meteoro-klooster en werd halverwege de 14e eeuw gesticht door een monnik genaamd Varlaam. De kapel werd uiteindelijk versierd in 1548. De prachtige fresco's in de Allerheiligenkapel van het klooster zijn van de beroemde hagiograaf van de 16e-eeuwse Franco Catalano. Het klooster heeft de toren behouden met het oude pully-systeem waar je het net kunt zien, dat door de eerste monniken werd gebruikt om mensen en proviand op te halen. De bezoekers kunnen ook een zeer groot 16e-eeuws eiken vat zien dat in de afgelopen eeuwen werd gebruikt voor wateropslag. Het klooster van Varlaam heeft onlangs een gloednieuw museum geopend, waar bezoekers de voortreffelijkheid van religieus geschilderde iconen kunnen bewonderen - meestal uit de tijd van de Renaissance - en kostbare heilige gewaden van de priesters uit de Byzantijnse periode.
Het Heilige Klooster van St. Stephen is een van de meest toegankelijke kloosters in Meteora, gelegen op een lagere rots en verbonden door een stenen brug. Het werd gesticht in de 14e eeuw en biedt een prachtig uitzicht op de omliggende kliffen en een rustige sfeer. Binnen vind je een prachtige kerk versierd met fresco's en iconen, samen met een collectie heilige relikwieën. De serene omgeving van het klooster maakt het een perfecte plek om de ongelooflijke natuurlijke schoonheid van Meteora te reflecteren en vast te leggen.

A very comfortable way to explore the monasteries. Driver was helpful and informed.
We had an excellent driver “Vasili” who looked after us very well.
A very comfortable way to experience Meteora’s other-worldly monasteries. Vassilis was a helpful and confident driver, and made sure we could experience 3 different monasteries and stop wherever we liked to take photos. The taverna lunch was delicious too! This is more like a luxury transfer than a guided tour, so it’s worth reading up about the monasteries before you go.

We had a wonderful day. Our driver was great. He was very thoughtful and a joy to speak with. He was passionate and very knowledgeable adding to the experience . We also had a guide that did a good job of providing narrative of the monasteries. Both the setting of the monasteries and the facilities themselves are inspiring. Our full day tour to Meteora from Thessaloniki was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. Our day started with an on time pick up from the Electra Palace hotel in downtown Thessaloniki. Our driver, Antonis Pouliasis, who speaks excellent English, greeted us warmly and welcomed us into his spacious and comfortable Mercedes van. During our drive to Meteora, he informed of history and geography of the area and pointing out areas of interest along the way. He made stops for photo ops and bathroom and snack breaks along the way. Once we arrived in Meteora, he personally guided us through two of the most significant and beautiful monestaries: St. Stephen’s and the great Meteoron Monestary. He shared insights throughout each tour. After many photo ops, he dove us to a tasty lunch spot in nearby Kalabaka before we headed back to Thessaloniki using a different but scenic route from which we could view Mount Olympus from the other side. We strongly recommend Antonis as a driver and a tour guide. He made our tour comfortable, informative and memorable.

The Monasteries at Meteora are something to be experienced in person. I don’t think photographs can capture the splendor. Our driver, Antonis made the trip even more memorable. I highly recommend.
