Verken de UNESCO-werelderfgoedlocatie Meteora, een rotsformatie in Centraal-Griekenland die een van de grootste en meest steil gebouwde complexen van oosters-orthodoxe kloosters herbergt tijdens deze privéexcursie van een hele dag. Vertrekkend vanuit Athene, passeer je de schilderachtige steden Amphissa, Lamia en Trikala voordat je aankomt bij Meteora. De naam Meteora wordt gebruikt om elk rotsplateau of steile rotsformatie te definiëren. De kloosters werden gebouwd tussen de 14e en 19e eeuw, hun locatie was zorgvuldig gekozen zodat de monniken zo dicht mogelijk bij God konden zijn.

We komen aan bij Meteora en bezoeken drie kloosters. Adembenemend op de eerste plaats, de kloosters zijn van groot cultureel en natuurlijk belang. Afgesplitst van aardbevingen, verweerd door de wind en het water gedurende miljoenen miljoenen jaren, zijn deze immense rotsen een authentiek meesterwerk van moeder natuur. De Meteora is een rotsformatie in Centraal-Griekenland waar een van de grootste en meest steil gebouwde complexen van oosters-orthodoxe kloosters is gevestigd. De zes (van de oorspronkelijke 24) kloosters zijn gebouwd op immense natuurlijke pilaren en heuvelachtige ronde rotsblokken die de omgeving domineren. Meteora is opgenomen op de UNESCO Werelderfgoedlijst en de naam betekent "verheven", "verheven", en is etymologisch verwant aan meteoor. Gelieve bescheiden gekleed te zijn. Vrouwen wordt aangeraden lange rokken en lange mouwen te dragen. Als je die niet hebt, krijg je een rok bij je weg naar binnen.
Vrije tijd voor lunch in een traditionele Griekse taverne met je vrienden en familie of winkelen in Kastraki, een pittoresk dorpje in de buurt van Meteora.
Op de terugweg naar Athene maken we een stop bij het slagveld van Thermopylae om het standbeeld van koning Leonidas te bewonderen. Leonidas was een koning van de Griekse stadstaat Sparta en had een opmerkelijke deelname aan de Tweede Perzische Oorlog, waar hij de geallieerde Griekse troepen naar een laatste stand leidde in de Slag bij Thermopylae (480 v.Chr.) terwijl hij probeerde de pas te verdedigen van het binnenvallende Perzische leger; hij stierf tijdens de slag en ging de mythe binnen als de leider van de 300 Spartanen. Terwijl de Grieken deze strijd verloren, waren ze in staat om de Perzische indringers in het volgende jaar te verdrijven.
We zullen laat in de middag terug zijn in Athene. De reistijd is ongeveer 4,5 uur.

George Remoundos was Amazing!!! He was very knowledgable, pointed out important landmarks and buildings for us. Stopped for a lot of photos. Accomodated the kids washroom breaks. He was the best!!! If you go to Meteora, make sure to go with George. You will love it.

Meteora is a magical, beautiful place. ancient monasteries sitting on huge sandstone columns. A mystical place with great byzantine christian art and breathtaking views . It is about 3.5 hours drive from Athens. We did a round trip in 13 hours. Worth staying overnight if you have the time. Also enjoyed the stop t historical Thermopylae, where the 300 Spartans took their last stand. Our driver George was exceptional. Was on time, very nice, knowledgeable, patient and helpful. I should add, I've used Viator a few times over the past few years and haven't regretted. So far, very good experiences. I'd recommend it

Meteora is a really beautiful and interesting place to visit. A private tour I think is the best way to do it because you get to spend more time at each monastery and maximize your time. George our tour guide was professional, specially knowledgeable and very attentive. He explained a lot of the history and interesting facts while driving from place to place, and he took us to a good restaurant with delicious authentic food at a good price. I really recommend this tour and remember to ask for George if you want to have the best experience.

If you ever have the chance to tour Meteora with George, TAKE IT! Yes, it does make for a very long day leaving out of Athens. But the drive is on good roads, George is safe driver and most importantly, he is describing some of the history of the area while driving through it. The absolute star of this tour however, has to be Meteora. One word: STUNNING!

I am still stunned by Meteora. The views were amazing, unlike any other. The monasteries had so much detail it's almost unbelievable that they were built so long ago. Our driver George took good care of us especially since it was such a long drive, he provided lots of history about the lands on the way. I would definitely do it again, you can't get enough of the views looking to and down from the monasteries. Be prepared to hike! Much less to say about Thermopylae but it's in the way so why not...
