Palmer is een stad in en de stadshoofdstad van de Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska, gelegen 68 km ten noordoosten van Anchorage aan de Glenn Highway in de Matanuska Valley. Het is de negende grootste stad van Alaska en organiseert de jaarlijkse Alaska State Fair.
De Matanuska-rivier is een 121 km lange rivier in Southcentral Alaska, die door een brede vallei ten zuiden van de Alaska Range stroomt, bekend als de Matanuska-vallei.
Met een lengte van 27 mijl en een breedte van 4 mijl is het de grootste gletsjer van Alaska die over de weg bereikbaar is. Het heeft ook een van de meest toegankelijke gebieden om op te lopen van alle gletsjers in Alaska. Bewonder het ijs dat 10.000 jaar geleden hoog in het Chugach-gebergte is gevormd. We brengen over het algemeen twee uur door en lopen drie mijl op het ijs. Ten slotte stoppen we voor de lunch in een lokaal eetcafé met een prachtig uitzicht op de gletsjer. Dit is een once in a lifetime bucketlist-kans om gletsjerijs te verkennen!

This was our first visit to Alaska, and this tour was the perfect way to start our trip. We had arrived in Anchorage from New York the night before, getting to our hotel well after 10 PM. Despite the early pickup, our guide Bill arrived right on time and even texted us to let us know he was waiting in the lobby. The drive to Matanuska Glacier took about two hours, with beautiful scenery along the way. Once we arrived, we put on our crampons and headed out onto the glacier. Walking on the ice and experiencing the incredible landscape of snow, ice, and meltwater up close was truly unforgettable. Our group consisted of only six people, which felt like the perfect size. Bill was knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to answer questions about the glacier and the surrounding area. One memorable moment was drinking some of the pure glacier meltwater flowing through the ice—a unique experience I wouldn't have wanted to miss. We spent approximately 2 to 2.5 hours hiking on the glacier, exploring its fascinating features and taking in the stunning views. Afterward, we had lunch at the Long Rifle Lodge. I highly recommend the Grilled Salmon Burger - it was excellent. Overall, this was a fantastic experience and one of the highlights of our Alaska trip. If you're looking for an unforgettable way to experience Matanuska Glacier, I highly recommend this tour.

My husband, 12 year old son, and I spent our first day in Alaska going to the Matanuska glacier with Matt and JJ from Greatland. They picked us up promptly at 8, and we headed towards the glacier. They were awesome guys and gave a ton of insight about the Anchorage area and Alaska in general. When we got to the glacier, they navigated the process for us and gave us our gear. The tour was awesome and just the three of us. The guys showed us a lot of different features on the glacier and took pictures of us. They were awesome with my son as well. Lunch was at a local eatery with a glacier view. Good was great, and we all chatted while we ate. The way back was much of the same…pointing out things, answering our questions, and just being a generally fantastic cook experience. I would highly recommend Greatland Adventures, based on this experience. The glacier was like being on another planet, and the tour was personalized it made the experience that much more amazing! Highly highly recommend!

Had a wonderful time touring the glacier, even though it rained most of the day. Megan was a great guide and very knowledgeable. She let my daughter borrow her gloves and a coat since she was a little cold. Megan even dropped us off at our bed and breakfast in Palmer, AK! I highly recommend greatland adventures..

Our guide, Bill, picked us up at our hotel in Anchorage for a 2 hour ride to the glacier, with a short bathroom stop in Palmer. Along the way, he gave us some very interesting facts about the area and Alaska history. Bill was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, courteous, and just fun to speak with. Once at the glacier, he fully explained how to use the ice spikes, which helped me a lot. We hiked around the glacier with Bill changing course as necessary as he saw our abilities. My favorite site was the pool of blue water from glacier melt. It was fascinating to me to learn about the glacier and it's history and evolution. The sights of it and the surrounding area are stunning. After our hike, we went to the Glacier View Lodge for one of the best lunches I had during my time in Alaska. While I only had a salad and a beer, they both hit the spot. Bill, the glacier, and the entire experience will not be easily forgotten. Both my husband and I would recommend this to anyone!
