De Joodse bevolking woonde enkele duizenden jaren in Marokko en beïnvloedde de handel en cultuur, wat blijkt uit elke stad van Marokko waar je een Mellah vindt - de oude Joodse wijk of getto. De Mellah wordt bewaard en blijft in leven in Marrakech. Wandelend over de Mellah zal uw gids de geschiedenis en betekenis van de Joden in Marrakech uitleggen terwijl u de verschillende architectuur van de wijken verkent, een ontmoeting met kruiden- en specerijenhandelaren. We bezoeken de Slat al-Azama Synagoge, en de Joodse Begraafplaats (geen bezoek op zaterdag). Marokko bestaat al sinds de oudheid met verschillende beschavingen vanwege de kritieke ligging. In de kleine straatjes van de stad woonde vroeger de joodse gemeenschap van de stad, zoals blijkt uit gebouwen zoals de Lazama-synagoge, die een betegelde binnenplaats heeft en tentoonstellingen over het joodse leven, en de vredige joodse begraafplaats Miaara. De bruisende Mellah-markt, waar vlees en fruit wordt verkocht, en de Bab Mellah Spice Souk zijn ook vlakbij. Het gebied is bezaaid met cafés in Europese stijl, Marokkaanse restaurants met gegrild vlees en tajines.
Salat al-azamat ligt, net als andere synagogen die in Marokko zijn gebouwd, in de Mellah en werd rond 1492 gebouwd om de Joodse gemeenschap te dienen. Het werd gebouwd rond een centrale binnenplaats en was een model van traditionele architectuur. Het werd pas onlangs gerenoveerd: een erzat nachim (vrouwengalerij) werd toegevoegd aan de oostelijke muur en de typisch beweegbare houten boog werd vervangen door een marmeren boog die grenst aan de oostelijke muur.
De joodse begraafplaats van Miaara, gelegen in de wijk Mellah, getuigt van de lange geschiedenis van Marrakech als joodse gemeenschap. Deze grote ruimte, die meer dan 500 jaar oud is, heeft graven met een basic uitstraling en variërende afmetingen, daterend van enkele eeuwen tot enkele jaren. Aan de linkerkant getuigt een hele reeks anonieme graven van de epidemieën die de stad teisterden, waardoor overhaaste begrafenissen noodzakelijk waren.

We did the Jewish heritage tour with Noura. The tour was excellent! She has such rich knowledge of the Moroccan Jewish history along with the history of Morocco in general and current affairs and lifestyle of the Morocco of today. We learnt so much! The guidance was excellent. She paid close attention to individual needs and I couldn’t rate it highly enough! I will be recommending this tour to everyone I know coming to Morocco in the future.

The tour guide Abdel was super knowledgeable and explained about the history of the Mellah and the two Jewish sites we visited. The tour then leaves that area and walks back to the main souks in the Medina. While the guide was great, I would have liked if he had explained that he was going to take us to three specific shops there. When we said we were tired and ready to head, he was super responsive and listened. I would have liked if the tour had stopped by at least the outside of a few other former synagogues in the area. But overall recommend the experience.
Noura is a fantastic tour guide! She was very sensitive to the needs of our group of four the youngest 9 years old, a 13 years old teenager, a mom and grandmother. Her expertise gave us much history and meaning of what we were seeing and experiencing. We went deep into the Medina where we got to watch and learn from the craftsman. This trip was a bat mitzvah present for my granddaughter so exploring the Jewish history and sights was particularly meaningful. She was prompt in replying to messages as we were arranging the trip. We highly recommend her services!!
This is the most amazing country I've ever been able to visit. Historical signs and modern life coexist miraculously here. It's a country to visit, so much interesting, unexpected, sometimes stunning, you'd hardly find anywhere else. Noara’s incredible guide helped to understand the maze of Medina, showed the most famous places, talked in detail about the past of this country. If you think about where else to go, choose Morocco, you won't regret it.
Our tour guide was knowledgeable and took his time with us… answered our questions. Only negative is that he spoke too softly at times and was difficult to hear especially with all the traffic of motor bikes coming through.
We really enjoyed this walking tour. Abdel was extremely knowledgeable and engaging. He shared a lot of context and was able to answer our questions. The logistics were great and even the follow up afterwards was appreciated. The only downside (and reason for 4 stars) was being taken to multiple shops that had nothing to do with the history and felt unnecessary and disrupted the flow of an otherwise excellent historical tour.
Our family (including 2 kids ages 10 and 8) had an absolutely fantastic tour with Youssef of Marrakesh’s Jewish quarter and history. Youssef is one of the most knowledgeable and kind tour guides we have ever had. I would highly recommend doing a tour with him and if we ever find ourselves back in Morocco I would schedule a week of tours with Youssef.

We had Chachi as our tour guide and he was phenomenal!!!! This private tour was so informative and interesting and we definitely saw Jewish sights we wouldn’t have seen if not for Chachi. Afterwards we went to the Souk and Chachi took us around showing us various parts of Moroccan culture. We had a great time!!!
