Reisroute

We visited Budapest as part of our Viking Danube River Tour. We were looking for something unique to do on our last day in Budapest. The Flavors of Budapest Market Tour with Hungarian Cooking Class was the answer. We were greeted by Marti at the Great Market Hall for an informative tour of this historical market and its local flavors. Marti shared her knowledge and made it a great experience for our group. After the tour, she provided transportation to her cozy cooking studio where we spent the afternoon learning to make stuffed cabbage, potato soup and apple strudel. While cooking Marti provided us with tastings of items we learned about at the market. The day with Marti was awesome! She made it fun and she was very patient with us, her students. She shared many stories about her life and experiences. She went out of her way to include making a separate dessert to accommodate one of our gluten free friends. After the class she forwarded all of the recipes so our group could make the dishes for years to come. If you are looking for a memorable experience in Budapest, look no further. Flavors of Budapest Is a great option! Enjoy.
Dear Beth, Thank you so much for the amazing and detailed review and your kind words. Thank you for sharing your experience with others, I really appreciate it. It was a perfect event with you. I am really glad that you have enjoyed the class and the market tour and hope that you will have just as much fun preparing the dishes at home! I wish all you all the best!
What a wonderful way to see and get an insight into the Hungarian People. Marti was a fantastic host. We had 3 couples in our party and had plenty of room and plenty of opportunities to cook and make desserts. I am Gluten Free and Marti had tailored all dishes so I could eat them. I got to make my own dessert! The tour of the market place was extremely interesting and gives lots of insight into the country. We went back to market place after the tour to do more shopping. If you want a fun and hands on experience into the food of Hungary this was excellent!
Dear Leslie, Thank you so much for coming and also for taking the time to leave such an amazing and detailed review! I am glad that you had such an amazing experience with me and hope I was able to really give you an insight into my country and gastronomy.
This was the highlight of our trip to Budapest! Marti is so knowledgeable about the ingredients to her recipes. She cares very deeply for her craft and talent of cooking. This wasn't just a cooking class, this was a history lesson, life lesson, and experience into Hungarian life. We loved her stories about cooking as a child and her family recipes. Just a wonderful way to get out of the being a tourist and into a world of flavors and tastes.
Dear Dianne, Thanks you so mush for your kind words and review! It makes me really happy and I truly appreciate it! Such words are worth working for :)
Marti is one of the nicest, most giving persons I have ever met! Her passion for her country's cuisine and her natural talent for teaching make this experience one of the top things to do in Budapest!
Dear Dale, Thanks a lot for your kind words and for taking the time to leave me such a nice review. It makes me really happy.
I don't write many reviews on Tripadvisor, except in cases where the service is way beyond expectations. This was one of our best experiences in Budapest and well worth the time to give tripadvisor free content for a shout out to Marti at Cooking Hungary. We did the 5.5 hour market tour with cooking and were not disappointed in any way. My wife and I were joined by 3 others and had a wonderful time cooking, chatting and, of course, eating! If you have limited time in Hungary, this is one thing to try to fit in to your trip and will be far more enjoyable than any dinner at a restaurant.
Dear Darren, Thank you so much for coming and thank you for your detailed review and kind words. I am really glad that you have enjoyed the class and the market tour and hope that you will have just as much fun preparing the dishes at home! I wish you and your family the best!
Marti was amazing. We toured the market while purchasing some needed items for our experience. She really did a great job at showing us around the market and then off to her kitchen to begin the cooking experience. We loved it and the food was amazing. Thanks Marti
If you’re wondering how to enjoy your stay in Budapest to have a real exchange with someone passionate about Hungarian culture and gastronomy? In this case, I strongly advise you to take half a day and spend it with Marti. The Market Hall is a very nice market but with Marti it takes on another dimension. In addition to explaining the history of the place, she gives very practical advice on choosing local products like the famous paprika, pickles... and in addition, she makes us taste some specialties. This taste walk is just an appetizer compared to the course that follows. Perfect Welcoming, choice of its own menu to cook... another little break tasting local products... She is a real professional who also delivers useful techniques to those, like me, who love to cook. However, Marti kindly proposed to my friend, who never cooks, simple and yet indispensable tasks in the composition of our dishes. During this workshop and during the dinner that followed, we continued to discuss our cultures, our passions.... I will keep this discovery as important as visiting Parliament and relaxing in the thermal baths. Thank you Marti!
This was a delight! Marti is so knowledgeable about the Market and Hungarian cuisine, and even though we peppered her with questions, she answered every one. It was so much fun. We first walked around the Market and received not only a history, but saw the abundance of fruit and vegetables for sale, and we even had a snack - Langos pancakes (a pancake with garlic sauce and a little cheese - perfect for you garlic lovers). Yum! Next she took us to her Cooking Flat which was beautifully laid out, as the pictures show. Lots of room to watch and cook and eat and talk. We made the meal ourselves, all from scratch, including the dumplings, and used the simple ingredients purchased at the market. These are simple dishes, and Marti helped us make them expertly. We had Sour Cherry Soup, Chicken Paprikash and Gundel Pancakes with chocolate sauce. There was wine with the meal, homemade raspberry sauces to make sparkling sodas before, and even sausages and pickles to try. It was a lovely meal with more food than we could eat, simply made, and easily cooked. Marti even made my husband feel like a chef. It was great. We would highly recommend this as an addition to your Budapest trip to get a great feel for the cuisine and the people.
My boyfriend and I are both foodies and we both like to cook, so we decided to try a market tour with a local Hungarian chef. It was an amazing day! We met Marti, our chef and teacher, at the Central Market Food Hall, where we got to see and purchase local foods for our meal. Marti also got us a few extras to try, like apricots and cherries, which were both in season. After we acquired our groceries, Marti took us upstairs to try a traditional Hungarian food called Langos, traditionally topped with sour cream or garlic (we tried both!), with our choice of beverage (water, soda, etc.). The price of the cooking class included all things purchased at the market. From here, we went to the flat where we started our cooking class. It was so much fun! Marti taught us how to make goulash soup, hortobagy pancake with a chicken paprikash filling, and - the best! - Gerbeaud layer cake. While we were cooking, Marti offered us homemade Palinka, which was much better than any commercially prepared Palinka, and a variety of snacks, including the fruit we'd bought at the market, sausages, bread, and two types of peppers. Cooking with Kitchen Pixie Budapest was definitely one of our favorite experiences during our week in Budapest. Not only did we learn about cooking, we learned about life in Budapest and got recommendations for restaurants in the area (Thank you, Marti!). But mostly, we loved cooking - and eating - the delicious three-course meal we prepared. We cannot wait to cook these things at home to share with our friends!
We’ve started making cooking classes a regular part of our travels. Learning about the place you are visiting through the food is such a unique experience. We did a lot of research before our trip to Budapest to find the right cooking class. We knew we wanted an offering that included a market trip and that was going to be more on the intimate side rather than a large group. We chose Marti and are very happy we did. She is so passionate about what she does and could not have been sweeter. The space you cook in is so homey and the meal itself was delicious. We were even able to take some leftovers, which we enjoyed over the next couple of days. In addition, we left with very easy to follow recipes for the meal we made and a special little gift from Marti. If you are looking for a culinary experience in Budapest, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better one.
Dear Kelly, Thank you so much for your kind review. I am very grateful that you chose my culinary experience. I hope you will use the recipes at home for your family or friends. I wish you all the best, Marti from Budapest
