Begin uw rondreis met het uitzicht op het kasteel van Elector, de voormalige residentie van de aartsbisschop van Mainz en een van de belangrijkste renaissancegebouwen in Duitsland. Wandel langs de waterkant van de Rijn terwijl je meer te weten komt over het Romeinse "Moguntiacum" en generaal Drusus. Wandel langs het moderne stadhuis en steek de Rathausbrücke over, de voetgangersbrug, richting de oude stad, waar u een glimp van de ijzertoren kunt opvangen. U zult het Heilig Geist Spital (heilige geest) tegen het einde van de 13e eeuw in laat-romaanse stijl zien als huisvesting voor pelgrims, de oude en de zieken. Rijd door tot het late paleis van de Heilige Roomse keizer, dat tegenwoordig het Gutenberg Museum herbergt. Johannes Gutenberg werd geboren in Mainz tussen 1394 en 1400 en wordt in Europa erkend als de uitvinder van het drukken. Dompel jezelf onder in de unieke sfeer van de Grote Markt, in het midden waarvan de Heunensäule staat, een zandstenen zuil die de geschiedenis van Mainz herdenkt. Vlak boven het marktplein staat de St. Martin-kathedraal, de "Mainzer Dom". Wandel naar de Gutenbergplatz, waar je opkijkt naar het levensgrote beeld van de beroemdste zoon van de stad. Gelegen tegenover is de grote zaal van het Mainz State Theatre. Bewonder de Carnival-fontein met zijn meer dan 200 beeldjes en allegorieën en beëindig je tour op het Kirschgarten-plein met zijn middeleeuwse vakwerkhuizen en charmante tavernes waar ze lokale wijn serveren.

I learned a lot of the history of Mainz, like the Roman and French influences over the centuries, the importance of Gutenburg and the Bishop. I didn't realize how much there is in Mainz (especially underneath). Highly recommended when visiting.

A fascinating tour with an outstanding guide! The advertisement on Viator mentions the possibility of on-the-spot customization, a possibility which was certainly realized. My guide, Lothar, began by asking about my specific interests. Upon learning that I was most interested in the Gutenberg Museum, he changed the route for the tour. We proceeded immediately to the museum and spent the bulk of our time there. The guide used the museum’s lab to demonstrate the various steps in Gutenberg’s printing process and the technological advances that made the process possible. He then talked about the impact of printing on various historical events, most notably the Protestant Reformation. This customized tour of Mainz has been one of the high points of my visit to Germany. Highly recommended!
