Ontmoet je Gids Shore tempel. De UNESCO Werelderfgoed-geklasseerde stad is de thuisbasis van rotsachtige beelden die dateren uit de 7e eeuw. Erkend als een van de oudste voorbeelden van Dravidische architectuur, werden deze goed bewaarde artefacten gebouwd ter ere van hindoegoden.

De prachtige tempel kijkt uit over de baai van Bengalen en was een belangrijk centrum tijdens de heerschappij van de Pallava's toen Mahabalipuram de belangrijkste haven van hun Koninkrijk was. Gebouwd door koning Raja Simha tijdens het begin van de 8e eeuw, de Shore Temple is een mijlpaal in het architectonische landschap van India. Marco Polo noemde dit de zeven pagodes. De bestaande tempel is de laatst overgebleven van de 7 die ooit als baken voor zeevarenden stonden.
Dit zijn rotsachtige monoliet tempels structuren gebouwd in de 7e eeuw. Elk van de 5 rathas of strijdwagens zijn gewijd aan de hoofdcast van het Mahabharat epos - Draupadi, Arjuna, Nakul-Sahadeva, Bhima en Yudhister. Er is ook een sculptuur van een olifant naast de ratha van Nakul-Sahadeva. Zodra je naar de achterkant van de olifant staat zul je merken dat er een griezelige gelijkenis is tussen de achterkant van de strijdwagen en de olifant.
Vervolgens bezoeken we Arjuna’s Penace, een bas-reliëf monument dat wordt beschouwd als een van India’s mooiste kunstwerken uit de oudheid, met levendige scènes uit de Mahabharata. Het reliëf is 100 voet lang en 45 voet hoog! Het belangrijkste verhaal dat verteld wordt is hoe Arjuna, een van de Pandava broers, zware boetedoeningen uitvoerde om Lord Shiva's wapen te bemachtigen.
Deze merkwaardige rots lijkt Newtons wetten van de zwaartekracht te trotseren en heeft geen centimeter bewogen ondanks dat hij al meer dan duizend jaar in deze precaire positie op de helling staat.
De Varaha grot is uitgehouwen uit enorm stuk graniet en dateert uit de 7e eeuw. Het duurde enkele decennia voordat deze tempel voltooid was.
Pandava grot is de grootste grot-tempel in Mahabalipuram De grot wordt ondersteund door zes pilaren en twee pilasters.
Twee van de meest indrukwekkende kunstwerken van Mahabalipuram bevinden zich in deze grot.
Dit is een imposante strijdwagen die uit één steen is gehouwen. Oorspronkelijk gewijd aan Lord Shiva, heeft IT nu de godheid van zijn zoon Lord Ganesh.
IT is gebouwd in het jaar 640 en is de oudste vuurtoren van India en een van de oudste ter wereld.
