U kunt gemakkelijk een hele dag doorbrengen met het verkennen van Kanchipuram en de prachtige tempels, grotten en rotstekeningen van Mamallapuram. De meeste zijn uit de rots gehouwen tijdens het 7e-eeuwse bewind van Pallava, koning Narasimhavarman I, wiens bijnaam Mamalla (Grote Worstelaar) de stad zijn naam gaf. Van vijf Shiva-tempels in Zuid-India die zijn geassocieerd met de vijf elementen, is dit 12 hectare grote district het schrijn van de aarde. Je gaat onder de 59 meter hoge, ongeverfde zuid-gopuram in, waarvan het levendige houtsnijwerk in 1509 onder de heerschappij van Vijayanagar werd gebeiteld. Binnen leidt een zuilengalerij links naar de centrale compound, waar Nandi vanaf de rechterkant naar kijkt. Het innerlijke heiligdom (alleen hindoes) bevat een lingam gemaakt van aarde en een spiegelkamer waarvan het centrale Shiva-beeld wordt weerspiegeld in eindeloze herhaling.
We bezoeken de prachtige tempel van de Kailasanathar-tempel uit de Pallava-tijd. Kanchipuram was de hoofdstad van het middeleeuwse Zuid-Indiase koninkrijk Pallavas. De Pallavas waren instrumenteel in de overgang van rotsachtige architectuur naar stenen tempels. We zullen deze architectonische wonderen, gebouwd in 600 AD, waarderen.
Samengebundeld aan de zuidkant van Mamallapuram waren de Vijf Rathas, verbazingwekkend genoeg, allemaal gesneden uit enkele grote rotsen. Elk van deze mooie 7e-eeuwse tempels was opgedragen aan een hindoegod en is nu vernoemd naar een of meer van de Pandava's, de vijf heldenbroeders van de epische Mahabharata, of hun gemeenschappelijke vrouw, Draupadi. De rathas waren verborgen in het zand tot 200 jaar geleden door de Britten werd opgegraven. Ratha is Sanskriet voor 'strijdwagen' en kan verwijzen naar de vorm van de tempel of naar hun functie als voertuigen voor de goden. Men denkt dat ze oorspronkelijk niet als gebedshuizen dienden, maar als architecturale modellen.
We bezoeken ook Arjuna's Penance, een bas-reliëf van 100 voet x 45 voet waar een volledig meesterwerk uit het Mahabharata-epos is gesneden.
De volgende stop is bij Krishna's Butterball, een merkwaardig schouwspel van een 5 meter diameter bolvormig rotsblok dat gevaarlijk op een helling ligt en Newton's wetten van de zwaartekracht tart!
De torentempel met twee torens staat als een prachtige vuist van rotsachtige elegantie met uitzicht op de zee, omringd door tuinen en verwoeste hoven, en symboliseert de hoogten van Pallava-architectuur en de maritieme ambities van de Pallava-koningen. Het kleine formaat logenstraft zijn uitstekende verhouding en de allerhoogste kwaliteit van het houtsnijwerk, waarvan vele nu in vage impressionistische versieringen zijn geërodeerd. Gebouwd onder Narasimhavarman II in de 8e eeuw, het is de eerste belangrijke vrijstaande stenen tempel in Tamil Nadu.

They were very resourceful and made the trip fun! I thought it would be good if I wanted to travel around with peace of mind, such as traveling alone for the first time for women in India. Maybe some buses if we can get away.
