De tour begint bij het Windsor Guanabara Hotel, op slechts een korte afstand van de historische Santa Rita kerk in Largo de Santa Rita. Deze kerk, gebouwd op de plaats van de eerste begraafplaats voor slaven, toont een combinatie van koloniale en barokke architectuur, versierd met ingewikkelde ornamenten en religieuze kunstwerken. De Santa Rita kerk, een diep symbool van de slavernijgeschiedenis van de regio, is een aangrijpende herinnering aan het culturele erfgoed van Brazilië en trekt bezoekers uit de hele wereld.
Het Museum voor Geschiedenis en Afro-Braziliaanse Cultuur (MUHCAB) is een fictieve instelling die tot doel heeft het rijke erfgoed van de Afro-Braziliaanse cultuur te behouden en te promoten. Het toont artefacten, kunstwerken en documenten die de ervaringen en bijdragen van Afro-Brazilianen door de geschiedenis heen benadrukken.
Dit instituut zet zich in voor onderzoek en het behoud van het historisch en cultureel erfgoed met betrekking tot de Afrikaanse diaspora in Brazilië. De primaire focus van het IPN is de studie en verspreiding van de geschiedenis en herinnering aan de Pretos Novos-begraafplaats, die tijdens de koloniale periode in Brazilië een belangrijke begraafplaats was voor tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen en hun nakomelingen.
Bekend als de grootste haven voor Afrikaanse slaven tijdens de transatlantische slavernijhandel. Het werkte van het einde van de 18e tot het begin van de 19e eeuw, met naar schatting een miljoen tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen die er doorheen trokken.
De hangende tuin van Valongo is een opmerkelijke creatie die in het begin van de 20e eeuw ontstond als onderdeel van de stadsverfraaiingsinspanningen onder leiding van het bestuur van Pereira Passos, een periode die bekend staat als de Belle Époque. Deze betoverende tuin is een bewijs van de visie en toewijding om het stedelijke landschap van die tijd te verbeteren.
Het is een bruisende ontmoetingsplaats voor liefhebbers van samba, ijskoud bier en een levendige sfeer. Beschouwd als een van de coolste plekken ter wereld, volgens Times Out.
Beco João Inácio is een klein en historisch smal straatje in de wijk Lapa, bekend om zijn steile heuvels en stenen bestrating. Het wordt beschouwd als een pittoreske en charmante plek, vol met oude huizen, waarvan sommige al meer dan een eeuw bestaan. Mosaico Hilário Jovino is een stedelijk kunstwerk dat een specifiek deel van de wijk Lapa verfraait. Het is een kleurrijk mozaïek gemaakt van tegels, dat een uitgestrekte muur bedekt.

He gave us deep insights into how Africans built vibrant communities through resistance and innovation. I left with a whole new appreciation for the significance of Afro-Brazilian culture. I had an amazing time during the Afro-Brazilian tour! Our tour guide, Raphael, was very knowledgeable about the history of Brazil and its strong African connection. I've been to Rio before, but I've never heard these stories. It was revealing to learn about the city’s African-Brazilian roots. The parades were fascinating and the guide Luiz was super passionate and respectful. A really important experience.
