Op de hightech interactieve Lava Center-tentoonstelling leer je over de geboorte en groei van IJsland als een van 's werelds grootste vulkanische eilanden. Het is gedurende miljoenen jaren opgestegen vanuit de onderzeese Noord-Atlantische Rug, door talloze vulkaanuitbarstingen. Ze komen voor als een grote mantelpluim plaatselijk gesmolten gesteente toevoegt aan de opwaartse stroom van magma onder de scheurende segmenten langs deze bergkam. Door de verspreiding langs de bergkam bewegen de Euraziatische en Noord-Amerikaanse tektonische platen elke miljoen jaar 20 kilometer uit elkaar, een vingernagel per jaar. Maak kennis met de vulkanen en voel het trillen van de aardbevingen. Een fantastische film met de nieuwste uitbarstingen in IJsland en een prachtig observatiedek ronden een bezoek af dat je niet mag missen.

Bij LAVA Center is een hightech, interactieve tentoonstelling over vulkaan en aardbevingen. Het is de meest bekroonde tentoonstelling in IJsland. Het vertelt het verhaal van IJsland en legt uit waarom het zo actief is. Het gaat in op details over de verschillende vulkanen en soorten vulkanen. Een replica van de hotspot onder IJsland (Magma-pluim) en een aardbevingssimulator zullen je haar doen rijzen. Een film over de meest recente uitbarstingen en een prachtig observatiedek ronden een ervaring af die je niet mag missen. LAVA Center ligt direct aan de hoofdweg die vanuit Reykjavík naar het oosten gaat en is de toegangspoort tot de zuidkust en het Katla Geopark.

If somebody asks me about lava and geology i would point them straight to lava centre and their museum and movie. Not only is it intresting but its interactive and fun.

The Lava Center is located right on the road and has a large parking lot. At the time of our visit, there was very little going on, which was pleasant. We booked the film and tour. The film is very short and shows some of the latest eruptions. The film was okay, but it didn't necessarily have to be made. The tour through the subsequent exhibition was very interesting and really well done. All information is available in Icelandic or English. Many opportunities to interact. Duration is approximately 1 hour. One can, for example, feel the different magnitudes of earthquakes. One feels very humble and small after the visit. On the roof of the building, there is an observation platform from which one can see the various volcanoes. Unfortunately, not much can be seen in cloudy weather. The shop in the building is well-stocked and can also be visited without a ticket. As can the café. We did not visit this, but it looked nice.

I visited Lava as part of an organised tour. I was very impressed by the amount of different exhibits and the way it explained the various types and timelines involved in the whole process. It is well laid out and has enough people who could explain and answer questions.
The centre had good signage and was easy to navigate . Information as clear and facilities were clean looking. The movie was just a collection of volcano clips with loud music, which was a bit disappointing
