De LA Rive Eco Tour en Secret Stair Hike is bedoeld voor reizigers en de lokale bevolking die een deel van LA willen zien dat 99,9% van de mensen nooit zal vinden. Je vindt deze route niet in een reisgids of bij een andere reisorganisatie. Het is een unieke route die de geschiedenis van de LA River, LA transport, ecologie, stadsplanning, architectuur, cultorganisaties en meer combineert tot een ervaring die je niet snel zult vergeten. Terwijl andere toeristen rondrijden in busjes van beroemdheden, krijg jij een voorproefje van wat LA echt speciaal maakt. De LA River is meer dan een plek om een achtervolging voor Grease of Terminator 2 te filmen. Deze rivier heeft zijn eigen fascinerende (en soms angstaanjagende geschiedenis.) Deze tour neemt je mee door het verleden, het heden en de toekomst van de LA River om je te helpen deze vitale waterweg beter begrijpen. Op ons ontmoetingspunt leren we over de mensen die hebben gevochten om de rivier toegankelijk te maken. Wat begon met een paar draadknippers en een rock-'n-roll-mentaliteit, veranderde uiteindelijk in de Friends of the LA River Organization. Het was niet altijd mogelijk om langs de rivier te wandelen of fietsen zoals we dat nu kunnen. De rivier ondergaat een transformatie en de Vrienden van de LA River Organization hebben een cruciale rol gespeeld in de recente ontwikkeling.
Wist je dat LA vroeger geweldig openbaar vervoer had? Ik weet het, het is gek, maar het is waar. Hier loop je langs een verlaten stuk oude tramlijnen en leer je hoe we een van 's werelds beste transportsystemen zijn kwijtgeraakt.
Hier begint de wandeling pas echt. Je gaat de heuvels in via geheime trappen en vergeten paden. Er is prachtige architectuur uit het begin van de 20e eeuw en uitzicht op bezienswaardigheden in LA, zoals het Hollywood Sign en het Griffith Observatory. Echo Park is een van de oudere buurten van LA en de heuvels boden afzondering voor occulte organisaties en zelfvoorzienende religieuze verbindingen. De trappen, heuvels en paden leiden allemaal naar een geheime schommel met een geweldig uitzicht op de LA River en LA's Eastside.
Het laatste stuk brengt ons terug langs de LA River. In dit laatste gedeelte zie je waar langs de rivier nieuwe restaurants, winkels, spa's, appartementen en pocketparken opduiken. Los Angeles heeft enorme plannen voor de toekomst van de LA River. Wat we nu zien, weerspiegelt het begin van een plan van $ 1,6 miljard om de LA River nieuw leven in te blazen en te renaturaliseren. Wie weet hoe de LA River er over 100 jaar uitziet? Het zou net zo vreemd voor ons kunnen zijn als onze rivier 500 jaar geleden de inheemse bevolking van LA zou zijn.
Een van LA's beste plekken voor ontbijt of lunch. Dit is een geweldige plek om voor of na de tour te gaan. Je kunt hier ook een fiets huren en wat meer tijd doorbrengen aan de LA River.

We got to see amazing sights along the reborn LA River and learn how herons and egrets now live in what most probably think of as the dry concrete bed where car chases get filmed. We took hidden staircases that we never could have found on our own to see bungalows, flowers, art, and color from LA history (wait for the Pete Seeger song about the disappeared revivalist and the bed). Had a great time and learned so much from Chris, our guide and historian. Wonderful to see LA past, present, and future.

Highly recommend this tour! Chris was very knowledgeable and I learned a lot about the LA River, the history of Frogtown and the surrounding area. I enjoyed seeing parts of Los Angeles I wouldn’t otherwise find. Chris researches and writes all the tours himself; he is also well integrated in the area and would greet residents along the way by name. This is a great tour for visitors or locals looking to see parts of LA off the beaten path.

This tour was a terrific way to learn about the LA River's relationship with the city. I grew up in LA, but it was so fun to visit neighborhoods that I’d just driven by as a teenager. Our guide, Chris, shared well-researched history and local lore. And he had photos of old LA that helped us see how much the city has changed. Chris’ clearly cares about the residents and how the city has developed. We ended our tour at Spoke where my friends and I enjoyed a delicious meal. I highly recommend getting off the beaten track with See LA in a Day. I’m already planning our next outing with them.

This was an informative and fascinating "off the beaten path" tour that included the history and inter-related ecology for the LA River and adjacent human communities (Silver Lake, Echo Park, Frogtown/Elysian Valley). We particularly enjoyed exploring the numerous secret stairways, and seeing the diversity of architectural styles of the homes. Our tour guide (Chris), was very knowledgeable and seemed to genuinely enjoy giving the tour. He had many stories related to the area to tell, and illustrated points about the history using his iPad as a visual aid. He has obviously spent a great time studying the history of LA, the Master Plan for the LA River Restoration, and must have committed hours of time reviewing community property mapping and historical documentation. In summary, my wife and I found it be a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience. I would highly recommend this tour! As an added bonus, Chris may bring along his dog, who has a wonderful disposition, and seemed to enjoy the tour as much as we did!
