Het "zien" van een kasteel en het "begrijpen" ervan zijn twee zeer verschillende ervaringen. Deze tour is niet opgebouwd rond data en namen. We hebben de manier waarop het verhaal van dit kasteel wordt verteld volledig heroverwogen, waardoor een verhaal ontstaat dat echt zinvol is, of je nu van geschiedenis houdt, je aangetrokken voelt tot architectuur, nieuwsgierig bent naar de cultuur uit het samoeraitijdperk of op zoek bent naar een geweldige manier om tijd door te brengen in Kumamoto. Onderweg leer je wie dit fort heeft gebouwd en waarom, hoe het een 19e-eeuws beleg heeft doorstaan en waarom het 400 jaar later nog steeds het emotionele centrum van deze stad is. Dan gaan we verder dan de geschiedenis. Kumamoto Castle bevindt zich midden in een van de meest ambitieuze restauratie-inspanningen in Japan: een 35-jarig project om de schade van de aardbevingen van 2016 te herstellen. Nadat we elkaar voor het standbeeld van Kato Kiyomasa hebben ontmoet, klimmen we naar boven op het Special Observation Path, dat ons over de kasteelmuren voert en ons een vogelperspectief geeft op het fort en de lopende restauratie. Terwijl we wandelen, zal ik uitleggen waarom Kiyomasa het kasteel heeft gebouwd, welke kenmerken het het meest formidabele bastion in Japan maken en hoe de stad traditionele en innovatieve methoden gebruikt om het kasteel terug te brengen naar zijn oorspronkelijke staat. Helaas zijn rondleidingen niet toegestaan in het gerenoveerde museum in de kasteelhut, maar ik zal een kort overzicht geven van wat u kunt vinden en u begeleiden om eventuele vragen over de tentoonstellingen te beantwoorden. Tot slot zullen we langs de weg lopen die we zijn opgelopen en eindigen te midden van de winkels in de Sakura-no-Baba Castle Town.

It was a great tour! It was a tour in English, the guide was very friendly, knowledgeable, and made the history of the castle come alive with interesting stories and explanations. The tour was informative without ever feeling overwhelming. In the castle all explanations are in Japanese, so whenever I had a doubt or question I asked him and he was good at explaining everything :) it was nice to be guided by someone who is knowledgeable in the area. I would recommend for group as well as solo! I really appreciated that it wasn’t rushed, it lasted around 2 hours we started from the area around the castle all the way to inside. There was plenty of time to explore, take photos, and ask questions. I highly recommend it!

Rather than simply explaining the castle itself, he brought its history to life by carefully describing the historical background of each era and the roles played by the people who shaped its story. The tour went far beyond a verbal explanation. Using historical documents and maps, he guided us from the history of Higo before Kumamoto Castle was built all the way to the current restoration plans following the earthquake. The explanations were detailed, engaging, and easy to follow. Because of this, I didn’t feel like I was just learning isolated facts. Instead, it felt as though I was experiencing the story of Kumamoto Castle from beginning to end. I am a Korean living in Japan, and even my Japanese husband said that he learned many new things and found the tour incredibly fascinating and thought-provoking. As the restoration continues and Kumamoto Castle gradually returns to its former glory, I know we’ll want to come back again and again. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience not just the castle itself, but the rich history and stories behind it.
I went on a guided tour of Kumamoto Castle and it was a wonderful experience, far more than I expected! Especially my guide Walter's extensive knowledge of Kumamoto Castle was truly overwhelming. I was excited throughout because instead of just reading out the information on the sign, they told the story while interacting with us to suit our interests. I also learned a lot not only about the historical background but also about the building technology that is still recovering from the Kumamoto earthquake. I was deeply impressed by the "present state" that only Kumamoto Castle can see today, with its commitment to preserving traditional construction methods, the architectural innovations hidden in the special tour corridors, and the tremendous struggles of the craftsmen. I feel that this tour is worth more than what I paid for, as it gives me a chance to learn about the real charms of Kumamoto Castle, its defensive strategies, and its security secrets, which I would never notice just by walking. We met our guide, Walter, at the statue of the architect of Kumamoto Castle, a convenient meeting place and a great way to begin. We'd visited the castle several times before, and appreciated Walter's well-researched explanations. As we entered the castle grounds, he shared some theories about post-medieval air conditioning, and answered all our questions thoroughly and without hesitation. Severely damaged by an earthquake in 2016, the painstaking reconstruction effort reveals the cultural and historical significance of Kumamoto Castle, and its restoration is respectful of it as well. Walter's tour honored the castle's history and the workmanship of its craftsmen through the ages. To get the most out of the tour, ask lots of questions, especially inside the castle, where tours are restricted.
