Een bezoek aan het Kigali Genocide Memorial is een krachtige en emotionele ervaring. Hier leer je over de genocide op de Tutsi in 1994 aan de hand van tentoonstellingen, verhalen over overlevenden en herdenkingstuinen. De site eert meer dan 250.000 slachtoffers begraven in massagraven en toont Rwanda's reis van veerkracht en verzoening. Het is een diep ontroerend bezoek dat een beter begrip geeft van de geschiedenis en kracht van het land.
Bij deze herdenking herdenken we de tien Belgische VN-vredeshandhavers die omkwamen bij het begin van de genocide van 1994. Het is een rustige maar belangrijke plek die de rol van internationale troepen laat zien en context toevoegt aan de geschiedenis van Rwanda.
Tijdens de Mbuga City Walk wandelen we door een van de schoonste en meest levendige delen van Kigali, midden in het stadscentrum. Hier zie je een mix van moderne gebouwen en oudere huizen, elk met een eigen verhaal. Het is een kans om het ritme van de stad te voelen en te zien hoe Kigali in de loop der tijd is gegroeid. Voor degenen die graag winkelen of lokaal talent ondersteunen, dit gebied is vol met kleine winkels en verkopers die prachtige handgemaakte ambachten, mode en Made-in-Rwanda producten verkopen. We stoppen ook bij de enige echte beroemde Kigali-bewegwijzering — perfect om een foto te maken en een geweldige herinnering aan je bezoek vast te leggen.
We stoppen bij Elikapeka voor een traditionele Rwandese lunch. Het is een gezellige plek waar u kunt genieten van een verscheidenheid aan lokale gerechten en een gevoel krijgt voor de dagelijkse Rwandese keuken.
Biryogo Car-Free Street is waar Kigali’s creativiteit tot leven komt. Heldere muurschilderingen, street art en de drukte van het lokale leven maken het een van de spannendste plekken van de stad. We gaan erheen om de energie te voelen, contact te maken met mensen en een kant van Kigali te zien die leuk, kleurrijk en onvergetelijk is
In het Nyamirambo Women’s Center ontmoet je lokale vrouwen die gemeenschapsprojecten runnen en handgemaakte ambachten maken. Het is een kans om hun werk te zien, hun verhalen te horen en vrouweninitiatieven te ondersteunen die gezinnen in Kigali empoweren.
We sluiten onze stadstour af met een bezoek aan Mount Kigali, een van de hoogste punten van de stad.

I had a wonderful day exploring Kigali with Ange, a guide from Iriza Tours. She was warm, insightful, and incredibly attentive to both our interests and comfort throughout the day. Her deep knowledge of Rwandan history, culture, and daily life made every stop meaningful and engaging. We visited the Genocide Memorial. It was a deeply moving and emotional visit — sobering, powerful, and one that stays with you long after. We also visited the memorial for the Belgian paratroopers — a lesser-known but very important site that she made sure we didn’t miss.
