Kibera Slum Tour met Lucas

I always like to see all sides of a country I visit and a tour of Kibera was something I had to do. I’ve travelled lots but the tour of Kibera which we did with the amazing Peter is one of the best, if not best, tour I’ve done whilst travelling. Because Peter grew up in Kibera he knew so many people and was obviously so well respected. His knowledge and perspectives from a lifetime living there made the experience authentic and full of emotion. We met his beautiful family and spent time in their house. To see the resilience, strength of community and efforts to assist by Peter, Lucas and so many others was inspiring. You must do this tour!

This was one of the most meaningful experiences of our trip to Kenya. Many visitors come to Kenya to see the beautiful national parks and wildlife, which are truly amazing. However, I believe it is equally important to understand another side of Kenya and learn about the daily lives, challenges, and resilience of the people who live here. What made this tour special was Lucas. As someone who lives in Kibera and knows the community well, he provided insights that you simply cannot get from reading a guidebook. He answered all of our questions honestly and thoughtfully, and we learned so much about education, housing, employment, and everyday life in the community. Because the tour is led by a local resident, it feels authentic and respectful rather than like a sightseeing attraction. We had the opportunity to speak with people, visit different parts of the community, and gain a much deeper understanding of life in Kibera. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Nairobi. If you want to see more than just the tourist attractions and truly learn about Kenya, this is an experience you should not miss. My 15 year old daughter really appreciated this tour too.

We met our tour guide, Elijah, at the designated location, very easy spot to find. We’ve been on a few similar tours in different countries, I don’t think anything compares to this one. Meaning in terms of what you will see and the route you take along the way. Might leave many speechless. We walked all around Kibera, which included the market, many small alley’s between homes, along a river at one point, which Elijah explained why it was so brown. I’ll leave it at that. Elijah was very knowledgeable about Kibera and Nairobi and was able to answer any questions we asked. We stopped at a few other spots that included a business that made jewelry and another store of a woman’s empowerment group that made custom items from everything imaginable. Visited a primary school also, be prepared to give 1000 high 5’s and hugs for the children. They sang for us in their classroom. It was pretty cool to be welcomed like that. We visited the rest of the school and met the teachers as well. Near the end, Elijah invited us into his home and we went to an outdoor shop and he introduced us to his mother. Loved that he did this. He’s a good man and you could see he enjoyed showing us around. Ultimately, for us, it’s an eye opener. Not in a depressing way though. The people of Nairobi are welcoming and friendly, a smile and a hello goes a long way, as we experienced on this tour.

I had an eye-opening and unforgettable experience with this tour. My guide took me beyond the typical tourist spots and showed me a side of Nairobi that many people don’t get to see. She was knowledgeable, respectful, and made me feel safe and comfortable throughout the entire journey. What stood out most was his genuine connection with the local community and the way she shared real stories and insights with honesty and care. It wasn’t just a tour it felt like a meaningful learning experience. I highly recommend this guide to anyone who wants to understand Nairobi on a deeper level.

Today we visited the Kibera Slum with our 3 children (9, 7, 3). We were shown around by Effie and Elijah and met Lucas too. We really got a good picture of the neighborhood. They were very friendly (like all the people in the neighborhood by the way, we felt very welcome!) and have told a lot. It was incredibly impressive and we are grateful that we were able to show our children this part of the world. A lot of respect for this community, where everyone takes care of each other. During the tour we also visited the school that the tour guides founded from the proceeds. A beautiful encounter between children from completely different worlds. As far as we're concerned, you can't say you've seen Africa if you don't meet the locals and he finds out they're alive. This tour is a must for anyone who is in that position! This was a walking tour of just part of the Kibera Slums. Whilst I had mixed feelings about taking this tour - I don’t like the concept of poverty tourism - this tour was not that. It was well planned, well managed and interesting. Our host Effie was considerate throughout. And it was a great touch that Lucas was there to say hello at the end of the tour. Would thoroughly recommend this tour in order to see a real part of Nairobi life..

Overall great experience very knowledgable guide and was open to questions very friendly only complaint is being taken to places where they clearly want you to buy

I had some time to spare and decided to take a tour. I had no idea what to expect. This tour was eye opening. Lucas is the school administrator; more about this later. Elijah was our guide. When not guiding, he's a boda boda rider. We were guided through the market selling recycled clothes. We were shown the machinery area where things are made. Then we were shown how lovely jewelry is made from thrown away items and animal bones. We visited the woman's group originally setup to support HIV infected women. They make the most beautiful jewelry from paper. We were invited into Elijah's home and later invited into his mother's home. We were shown (inadequate) sanitation provisions and told about the history. Lastly we visited the school with wonderful young children. The tour is setup to finance the school and it was wonderful to see proceeds from the tour going to such a good cause. Although there were opportunities to buy products, the vendors were not pushy at all. One vendor had sculpted wonderful unique items out of scrap metal. If you have three hours to spare in Nairobi, spend them here!
