De privé wandeltocht is NIET uitverkocht, u kunt voor 1 persoon boeken en kunt met meer personen komen. De kleine groepsreis heeft max 5 personen en is vooral geschikt voor (individuele) reizigers die op zoek zijn naar een dieper begrip van Nepal’s verleden en zijn culturele rijkdom. Deze tour laat u een blijvende impressie van de grandeur en charme van de stad. Ga op reis door het culturele en historische hart van Kathmandu terwijl we het iconische Kathmandu Durbar-plein verkennen. Onze tour begint in Thamel, waar we vertrekken naar dit UNESCO Werelderfgoed. Onderweg stoppen we bij de vereerde Naradevi Tempel, bekend om zijn spirituele betekenis en bezoeken Washa Deu, de kiespijn godheid, doordrenkt van fascinerende lokale overtuigingen. Tijdens het bezoek zijn we getuige van de ongelooflijke Newar-cultuur die op het plein bloeit en nemen we even de tijd om zegeningen te ontvangen van de Levende Godin Kumari, die ons vanuit haar heilige raam vereert.

Wasya Dyaa, of de tandpijnboom, is een houten idool in de buurt van Thahiti Tole in Kathmandu, waarvan wordt aangenomen dat het tandpijn geneest. Traditioneel wordt gedacht dat het slaan van een munt in het hout van de boom tandpijn kan verlichten. Deze praktijk komt voort uit oude overtuigingen en gaat vandaag de dag door, ondanks moderne tandheelkundige zorg. De boom wordt geassocieerd met de legendarische Bangemudha, en veel bezoekers komen nog steeds bidden voordat ze naar een tandarts gaan. Rondom de tempel is een tandheelkundige hub ontwikkeld, met meer dan 20 klinieken, waarvan sommige dateren uit de Rana-periode. Deze plek combineert Nepalese mythologie en moderne gezondheidszorg, en een bezoek aan Wasya Dyaa is een unieke ervaring voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in de lokale cultuur en traditie, vooral voor mensen met kiespijn.
Ten zuidwesten van Asan Tole, bij de kruising van Kel Tole, trekt de Seto Machhindranath Tempel zowel boeddhisten als hindoes aan. Boeddhisten zien hem als Avalokiteshvara, terwijl hindoes hem aanbidden als een regenbrenger incarnatie van Shiva. Op de binnenplaats vind je kleine heiligdommen, chaitya's (kleine stoepa's) en standbeelden, waaronder een Europees ogend vrouwenfiguur omringd door kaarsen. Net buiten de tempel staan twee sierlijke bronzen beelden van Tara bovenop pilaren. Binnenin is het witgezicht van Seto Machhindranath bedekt met bloemen. Hoewel de exacte ouderdom van de tempel onbekend is, werd deze in de 17e eeuw gerestaureerd. Als je uitstapt, zie je de kleine Tantrische Lunchun Lunbun Ajima tempel, bekend om zijn erotische houtsnijwerk. In de buurt bieden winkels traditionele Nepalese kleding, waaronder topi (hoeden) en daura suruwal (traditionele kleding), met miniatuurversies voor kinderen.
De Kumari, ook bekend als de Levende Godin, is een heilig symbool van macht en zuiverheid in Kathmandu. De Kumari woont in de Kumari Ghar (Kumari Tempel) aan het Kathmandu Durbar Plein, en haar aanwezigheid wordt beschouwd als een essentieel onderdeel van het spirituele en culturele weefsel van de stad.
Hanuman Dhoka Palace, gelegen in het hart van Kathmandu Durbar Square, is een historisch paleizencomplex dat de koninklijke zetel was van de Malla-koningen en later de Shah-dynastie. Zijn naam komt van het nabijgelegen standbeeld van de apengod Hanuman, waarvan wordt aangenomen dat het de koninklijke familie beschermt. Het paleizencomplex, dat dateert uit de 16e eeuw, bestaat uit verschillende gebouwen, binnenplaatsen, tempels en heiligdommen. Het meest opvallende bouwwerk is het hoofdpaleisgebouw, dat eeuwenlang door de koningen en hun hof werd gebruikt. De architectuur van Hanuman Dhoka Palace is een prachtig voorbeeld van traditionele Nepalese Malla-architectuur, met ingewikkeld bewerkte houten ramen, massieve stenen pilaren en uitgebreide binnenplaatsen.

I did a free walking tour in Kathmandu with Santosh and really enjoyed it. He’s a knowledgeable and friendly guide who explains the city’s history in a clear and engaging way. While in Nepal my boyfriend and I did the Kathmandu Durbar Square Tour with Amazing Kathmandu Tours. Our tour guide was Santosh and he was fantastic! We walked from Thamel to Kathmandu Durbar Square first stopping at Seto Machindranath Temple. We then walked through several interesting areas, learning about the history of Nepal and the various religions and cultures, eventually arriving at Kathmandu Dubar Square. Santosh gave us a tour of the Hanuman Dhoka (Old Royal Palace), and the Kumari Ghar in hopes of seeing the Kumari herself (she did not show herself that day). We also walked past Freak Street, saw Kaal Bhairab, and walked around the Handicraft market. On the way back, we stopped at the Naradevi Temple and the Vaisha Dev Shrine, also known as the toothache tree, where people nail rupees to the tree in hopes of curing their tooth pain. We were looking for a tour with a small group (we lucked out and it was only the two of us), where we could learn a lot about the area and the history and culture of Nepal. This tour was perfect, long enough to learn a lot, but short enough to so some other adventures that day. As I hoped, Santosh taught us a lot about things we would have never learned. I especially liked learning about the fish in Asan, the tradition of hanging up images of snakes, and the religious imagery. I highly recommend taking a tour with Amazing Kathmandu Tours while in Kathmandu!

Santosh was extremely helpful from the very beginning. He gave me great advice on how to get around Kathmandu and even about trekking in Nepal. He took me through parts of the city I wouldn’t have explored on my own and assisted me with practical things like tickets for Durbar Square, a SIM card, and buses to Pokhara.
