Dit is een wandeltocht door het Joods Erfgoed in het stadscentrum van Thessaloniki, waar de belangrijkste Joodse gemeenschap eeuwenlang woonde en werkte. Hoewel niet veel van de oude gebouwen tegenwoordig bewaard zijn gebleven, opent de Joodse Gemeenschap van Thessaloniki vanwege de vreselijke brand van 1917 en de verwoestingen van de Tweede Wereldoorlog de belangrijkste sites met betrekking tot het Joodse erfgoed. Deze tour kan alleen 's ochtends worden gedaan, wanneer de sites open zijn tot 14.00 uur - niet op zaterdag. Blijf op de hoogte voor updateberichten van je gids over exacte tijden. Op verzoek kan er ook een langere tour worden geregeld met privévervoer om de oostkant van de stad te zien met de oude Joodse villa's uit het begin van de 20e eeuw, de nieuwe Joodse begraafplaats aan de westkant en ook het oude treinstation, bekend om de holocaust deportatie van 50.000 joden door de nazi's per trein. Bezoeken aan het Joods Museum en de synagoge vragen om een pre-reservering door uw gids, met volledige naam, paspoort en nationaliteitsgegevens die vooraf moeten worden verzonden.

De Monastoriotes is de zogenaamde "oude" synagoge van de stad, onlangs gerenoveerd en wordt bezocht op aanvraag en op afspraak uw gidsen voor u, met paspoortgegevens die nodig zijn voor alle bezoekers. De toegangsprijs is inbegrepen in het combinatieticket van 7 EUR samen met het geleid bezoek aan het Joods museum.

De beroemde overdekte markt Modiano uit 1930 is net gerenoveerd en is nu open! Het herbergt veel kleine levensmiddelenwinkels, genoemd naar de architect van de stad, Eli Modiano.
Het Joods Museum van Thessaloniki is gehuisvest in een historisch gebouw. We zien de tentoonstellingen op de oude Joodse begraafplaats, traditionele kleding en religieuze voorwerpen uit de oude synagogen en een fototentoonstelling over de geschiedenis van de Joden in de stad van de oudheid tot de moderne tijd. In de kleine museumwinkel kun je boeken en souvenirs kopen. De toegangsprijs voor het museum en de synagoge is een combinatieticket van 7 EUR per persoon.
Het Holocaust Memorial ligt aan de kust, op het Vrijheidsplein. Je zult de sculptuur zien die de holocaust met zeven vlammen voorstelt, in de vorm van de Menorah en menselijke lichamen, gecreëerd door Nandor Glid in 1997. Je hoort over de Black Sabbath-dag, die plaatsvond op precies hetzelfde plein.

Efi was both a guide and a historian. She is dedicated to the survival of history. Within 5 months the Nazis deported almost 60,000 Jews to Aushwitz, wiping out more than 90% of Jews who had lived in Greece and Macedonia since biblical times. Efi is very knowledgable but it was a 3/hour recitation of facts and figures and buildings. Disappointed in lack of color, storytelling, charm, or narrative of interesting unusual Jewish personalities - it was all about the business families whose names still grace the buildings. Very dry.
Dear Eve, I'm sorry you did not enjoy my private Jewish Heritage tour, but you don't mention that you attended only half of it. My full private tour always starts with the introduction on the history of Thessaloniki's Jewish Community from the ancient till the modern times so my guests can first have the historical, cultural and political background with some basic facts before they attend the rest of the tour. You did not want to continue to the rest of the walk, so you missed the visit to the Jewish Museum, to some central streets and to the Holocaust Memorial with me, which means that you missed many more stories and narrative I always share with my guests in different places. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Greece and thank you for visiting my city.
