De Blauwe Moskee dient als een belangrijk kenmerk van de Ottomaanse geschiedenis. De architectuur van de structuur wordt vereerd om zijn grandeur, en het interieur beschikt over ingewikkeld design en kunstwerken. De moskee ligt op een heuvel in Istanbul, op de top van een oud Byzantijns paleis en ligt bij het beroemde Hippodroom en de Hagia Sophia. De buitenkant van de Blauwe Moskee bestaat uit een combinatie van rood graniet, marmer, puddingsteen en porfier. De interieurmaterialen zijn vergelijkbaar, maar zijn ook voorzien van keramische tegels, houten elementen en meer.
Hagia Sophia betekent Kerk of Heiligdom van Heilige Wijsheid. Na de moslimverovering van Constantinopel werd de naam veranderd om te verwijzen naar het bouwwerk als moskee. De islamitische terminologie werd Heilige Hagia Sophia Grote Moskee. De Hagia Sophia is belangrijk voor christenen omdat het diende als zetel van het oecumenisch patriarchaat van Constantinopel. Voor de Grieks-orthodoxe christenen was deze zetel gelijk aan die van de katholieke paus. De Hagia Sophia staat bekend om zijn architectonische pracht, zijn kunst, zijn symboliek van de consolidatie van Romeinse politieke en religieuze machten en zijn rijke geschiedenis. De Hagia Sophia was belangrijk voor het Romeinse Rijk omdat het de consolidatie van religieuze en politieke macht vertegenwoordigde. Deze machtsconsolidatie werd het best gesymboliseerd in het gebruik van de Hagia Sophia voor ceremoniële keizerkroningen.
Ontdek de unieke Basilica Cisterne of het Yerebatanpaleis in de wijk Sultanahmet in Istanbul. Het werd gebouwd onder de Stoa Basiliek, die werd gebouwd als een centrum van handel, justitie en kunst tussen de 3e en 4e eeuw. Het kleine gebouw werd voor het eerst gebouwd door keizer Constantijn en werd herbouwd door keizer Justinianus in de 6e eeuw als gevolg van de corruptie van de stad tijdens de opstanden in 532. Omdat alle wateren rond Istanbul zout water waren, serveerde de Basilica Cisterne gefilterd drinkwater aan het Grote Paleis en de gebouwen eromheen. 1453 na de verovering van Istanboel door het Ottomaanse Rijk werd ook het Topkapipaleis van water voorzien.
Het verhaal van de Hippodroom van Constantinopel begint in de oudheid; het dateert uit het begin van de 3e eeuw na Christus en werd gebouwd op bevel van keizer Septimius Severus. Byzantium had in deze tijd al een strategische en belangrijke positie, hoewel het tot de 4e eeuw moest wachten om zijn hoogtepunt van macht te bereiken. Het werd de hoofdstad van het Romeinse Rijk op initiatief van Constantijn de Grote die het omdoopte tot Constantinopel, de stad van Constantijn, en het werd uitgebreid met indrukwekkende gebouwen.
De Grote Bazaar werd in opdracht van Mehmet II (1444-1481) direct na de Ottomaanse verovering van Istanboel in 1453 gebouwd om financiële middelen te verschaffen voor de Hagia Sophia. De bouw van de Grote Bazaar begon in 1461. De Grote Bazaar, die in het begin een houten bouwwerk was, is nu volledig gebouwd van steen en baksteen. Bakstenen werden gebruikt voor de gewelfde bogen, geslepen stenen werden gebruikt aan de basis van de bogen, en muren werden gebouwd door pleisterwerk over bakstenen of steen. Het oudste gebouw is de Cevahir of İç Bedesten. Het op één na oudste gebouw is de Sandal Bedesten. Bedesten, een gewelfd en vuurvast segment van de Grote Bazaar, dankt zijn naam aan bez (doek) en betekent lakenverkopersmarkt. Beide bedestens zijn typische voorbeelden van klassieke Ottomaanse architectuur.

What a fantastic day - Hamide was the best guide we have had the pleasure of meeting. We first went to Haggia Sofia and there was a long queue - immediately offered us the choice of skipping to the Cistern and returning later after queue reduced. That pattern repeated all day - something that is impossible on large group tours. It was like walking around the city with a knowledgable friend. We are so pleased we decided to go with this tour and guide. Worth every penny !

Kenan was a fantastic guide. He was well informed about all the historical elements we viewed, plenty of interesting stories. Loads of facts and dates. He was also very funny. He was extremely useful in helping us figure out the do's and dont's of the city and cultures. This part was all fantastic! Only issue is the last two experiences attended were very heavy sales pitches. You get to view a person making a rug by hand and the history of this ancient art, which is all beautiful and wonderful. Then they take you to a seperate room where they offer you drinks and try to sell you a rug. Similar, but much less pushy, is the pottery place. You watch a master create a small piece on a foot kick pottery wheel, then they let you try which is super fun. They talk about the history and materials used in their cultures pottery. Then they show you around the sales floor and try to convince you to buy their wares, but not nearly as pushy as the rug guys. But I am from the upper Midwest in USA and anyone who talks to me in a store feels pushy to me, so perhaps to other folks they weren't pushy. If you like to haggle prices, Istanbul is your town. Everyone haggles.

We had a fantastic city tour of Istanbul with our guide, Kenan. He was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing the history and stories behind each site in a way that was engaging and easy to follow. His sense of humour made the day even more enjoyable, and he set a really comfortable pace so we never felt rushed. We saw all the major landmarks and even discovered a few hidden gems along the way. Kenan also recommended a lovely restaurant for lunch, which was one of the best meals of our trip. A brilliant experience from start to finish.
