De Hagia Sophia, officieel de Hagia Sophia Grote Moskee, is een moskee en een belangrijke culturele en historische plek in Istanboel, Turkije. Het was vroeger een kerk (360–1453) en een museum (1935–2020). Het was de laatste van drie kerkgebouwen die achtereenvolgens door het Oost-Romeinse Rijk op de site werden gebouwd. Het werd voltooid in 537 na Christus en werd daarmee 's werelds grootste binnenruimte en een van de eerste die een volledig hangende koepel gebruikte. Het wordt beschouwd als de belichaming van de Byzantijnse architectuur en zou "de geschiedenis van de architectuur hebben veranderd". Vanaf de inwijding in 360 tot 1453 diende de Hagia Sophia als de kathedraal van Constantinopel in de Byzantijnse liturgische traditie, behalve in de periode 1204-1261 toen de Latijnse kruisvaarders hun eigen hiërarchie installeerden. Na de val van Constantinopel in 1453 deed het dienst als moskee, waar kort daarna minaretten werden toegevoegd. De site werd een museum in 1935, en werd herbestemd als een moskee in 2020.

A very interesting tour which covers all the important parts of the old town of Istanbul. Can our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and great fun. He was happy to answer any questions and made sure everyone in the group was involved. The tour was very interactive and overall a great day!
