Als je Istanbul voor de eerste keer gaat bezoeken, zal deze culturele en culinaire wandeltocht in Istanbul je gedetailleerde informatie geven over wat ik de "Essentials of Istanbul Experience" kan noemen. We zullen enkele van de beroemdste bezienswaardigheden van Istanbul bezoeken en hun historische, architectonische en sociale belang begrijpen. We zullen ook wat lokale gerechten proberen, waaronder (ieders favoriete) Turkse desserts. Ik zal mijn gasten enkele van de minder bekende en weinig opgemerkte details voor elke site uitleggen. De ervaring kan worden aangepast met de consensus van alle deelnemers.

Dit ontspannende en prachtige openbare park maakte ooit deel uit van het Topkapi-paleis en is meer dan een recreatiegebied. Dit gebied speelde een zeer cruciale rol in de geschiedenis van Istanbul, maar ook van de Turkse Republiek. In april staat het vol met tulpen. In mei vervangen rozen de tulpen. Elk seizoen ziet het er op zijn eigen manier geweldig uit.
De Sultan Ahmed-fontein, de eerste in zijn soort, voor het Topkapi-paleis is op zichzelf al een elegant monument. Omringd door het Topkapi-paleis en de Hagia Sophia krijgt deze fontein zelden de aandacht die hij verdient. We zullen de ornamenten uit de Tulpenperiode met speciale aandacht onderzoeken en de impact ervan op de stad begrijpen.
Yerebatan (basiliek) Cisterne is een 6e-eeuwse Romeinse waterstructuur en de grootste in zijn soort in Istanbul. Met eindeloze rijen kolommen heeft het een unieke uitstraling. Het wordt beschouwd als een topattractie in Istanbul. Op drukke dagen kan er een wachttijd van 30 minuten zijn.
Dit 17e-eeuwse meesterwerk van Ottomaanse architectuur is een van de topattracties in Istanbul. Het interieur biedt een van de meest glamoureuze voorbeelden van Ottomaanse moskeeën. Het is versierd met duizenden tegels en uitgebreid penwerk. Beginnend vanaf de buitenste binnenplaats tot aan de binnenste hoeken, biedt deze moskee verschillende elegante voorbeelden van de Turkse artistieke smaak van de 17e eeuw.
Het Sultanahmet-plein is het oude Romeinse Hippodroom en bevat enkele van de oudste en belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden van Istanbul. De Egyptische Obelisk, Serpent Column, Masonary Obelisk en German Fountain behoren tot die bezienswaardigheden. Elk van hen heeft zijn eigen fascinerende verhalen en niet gemakkelijk op te merken aspecten, die ik tijdens ons bezoek graag deel.
De Hagia Sophia-moskee in Istanbul is een van de meesterwerken van de wereldarchitectuur en staat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO. Dit 6e-eeuwse gebouw bevat artistieke voorwerpen en architectonische elementen uit de Romeinse, Byzantijnse en Ottomaanse beschavingen. Het is een must-see in Istanbul, maar om die reden zijn er lange wachtrijen die kunnen resulteren in 1-2 uur wachttijd. (Als mijn gasten het gebouw liever alleen van buitenaf bekijken om niet in een lange rij te hoeven wachten, kan een alternatieve bestemming worden toegevoegd)
Als een belangrijke stad van de Zijderoute en de Kruidenroute, pronkt Istanbul met de aanwezigheid van enkele van de beste middeleeuwse bazaars ter wereld. De Grote Bazaar en de Egyptische (Kruiden) Bazaar zijn nog steeds enkele van de meest levendige commerciële gebouwen in Istanbul. Afhankelijk van de persoonlijke voorkeur van mijn gasten kunnen we een of beide bezoeken. Grote Bazaar is op zondag gesloten.
Hoewel de Blauwe Moskee de meest bezochte Ottomaanse moskee in Istanbul is vanwege de ligging in het hart van de oude stad, zijn verschillende andere moskeeën een bezoek waard vanwege hun historische betekenis en architectonische aspecten. Vooral de Beyazit-moskee bevat zeer interessante kenmerken die uniek zijn in Istanbul. We zullen de kleurrijke decoratie uit 1505 bekijken.

Istanbul is an incredible city on its own, but exploring it with Unsal made the experience unforgettable. From the moment our tour began, he brought every site to life with his deep knowledge, engaging stories, and genuine passion for the city’s history and culture. He guided us through iconic landmarks including the Blue Mosque, Ayasofya, the Grand Bazaar, and even the atmospheric underground Basilica Cistern—famous for its appearance in the James Bond film From Russia with Love. At each stop, Unsal shared detailed insights that helped us appreciate not just what we were seeing, but the centuries of history behind it. What made the day even more special were the thoughtful touches he added along the way. He led us to a beautiful courtyard café for a relaxing break, and later to a traditional restaurant where we enjoyed an authentic Turkish lunch—places we never would have found on our own. Unsal was friendly, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. His storytelling made the city’s past feel vivid and alive, and his enthusiasm was infectious. If you’re visiting Istanbul and want a guide who truly elevates the experience, I can’t recommend Unsal highly enough.
Our tour of Topkapi Palace was unforgettable, entirely thanks to our incredibly knowledgeable and humorous guide. He brought the Ottoman Empire to life with fascinating details on art, architecture, and court life that we would have otherwise missed. We loved how personalized the tour was; he tailored it to our interests, walked at our pace, and enhanced the storytelling with historical documents and photos. His care extended well beyond the tour itself, he gave us an authentic local restaurant recommendation and even helped us navigate the area afterward to shop. Our tour of Topkapi Palace was absolutely exceptional, and it was entirely thanks to our guide, Unsal. Unsal gave us the opportunity to tailor the tour entirely around Topkapi Palace, allowing us to spend all our time going as deep as possible into the parts that interested us most. We had an excellent day with Unsal. He met us at our hotel. We visited the “essentials” and more. He gave lots of information (he’ll tailor depending how much you want to hear); told us history and made loads of recommendations for the rest of our stay. We ate meatballs (Turkish favourite) and later, baclava in an artisan tea house. We have had a day to remember, highly recommend this tour. 🙏🏻
We had the most memorable tour with Unsal. He has expansive knowledge of Turkish history and culture. We learned a lot of interesting facts . He provided us with detailed explanations of everything we saw. Unsal was extremely accommodating. He met us at the hotel and we started the tour right away. He has a wonderful gentle personality and made us very comfortable throughout our long hours together. He is a great storyteller and very good photographer also. He sent us all good pictures that he took. We spent wonderful day with Unsal. His tour was excellent!!! We are very grateful and have the best memories of our time together!

Unsal was a really exceptional guide. Very professional and extremely informative. Would highly recommend. We toured these spots: Hagia Sophia, Basicalla Cistern, Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, and Grand Bazaar Lot of walking history around the highlighted areas above. Unsal was also very helpful with recommendations for restaurants and things to do outside of the tour.
We did the tour including blue mosque, hagia sophia, sultans tomb, hippodrome and basilica cisterns. The tour is extraordinary interesting for inter-cultural experience from the ancient to the modern istanbul. The perfectly well prepared schedule suits for beginners. For the ones with background knowledge or deeper interest in specific topics the tour could be personally adjusted on request. Our many detailed questions to social, economic, technical and cultural topics have all been answered in a motivated and enthoustiastic manor. - We enjoyed the tour also on a personal level and are deeply thankfull for the many recommandations and organisational support for our next holidays in istanbul. - Thank you very much! :-)
