Begin aan een privékustreis van Accra naar Cape Coast, ooit de hoofdstad van Ghana, bekend om zijn authentieke culturele erfgoed, koloniale architectuur en Cape Coast Castle - een UNESCO-werelderfgoedlocatie. Verken het Cape Coast-kasteel dat in 1653 door de Zweden werd gebouwd, terwijl je gids je door de kerkermuren leidt waar slaven ooit werden opgesloten voor hun aangrijpende reis over de Atlantische Oceaan. Ontdek de duistere erfenis van dit fort, waar ook het West-Afrikaans Historisch Museum is gevestigd. Bezoek Elmina Castle, gebouwd door Portugese handelaars in 1482, in navolging van verhalen uit vervlogen eeuwen. Tijdens de pelgrimstocht zal onze geaccrediteerde gids u kennis laten maken met diverse en levendige culturen in Ghana. In het kasteel lopen bezoekers door de gangen en kamers waar tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen ooit onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden gevangen werden gehouden voordat ze naar Amerika werden getransporteerd. De kerkers zijn bijzonder angstaanjagend en bieden een aangrijpende inkijk in het onvoorstelbare lijden van degenen die met geweld werden gescheiden van hun families en thuislanden. Bezoekers zullen ook de Door of No Return zien, een symbolische uitgang waardoor tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen het kasteel verlieten, wat het einde van hun vrijheid markeerde.
Het avontuur gaat verder in Elmina Castle, waar we ons zullen verdiepen in het diepgaande verleden van de transatlantische slavenhandel en de koloniale geschiedenis. Duik erin, leer en ervaar zowel aangrijpend als verhelderend erfgoed, terwijl we de kerkers en binnenplaatsen verkennen die getuige waren van belangrijke historische gebeurtenissen. Terwijl je tussen de boomtoppen loopt, word je gefascineerd door het weelderige groen en de gevarieerde fauna die floreerde in dit biodiverse ecosysteem. Een van de belangrijkste attracties van het park is de beroemde Canopy Walkway, een reeks hangbruggen waarmee bezoekers tussen de boomtoppen kunnen lopen en kunnen genieten van een adembenemend uitzicht op het weelderige bos beneden. De Canopy Walkway biedt een spannend avontuur en een kans om het gevarieerde planten- en dierenleven te observeren dat het regenwoud zijn thuis noemt. Kakum National Park biedt begeleide natuurwandelingen en trektochten waarmee bezoekers de rijke biodiversiteit van het regenwoud kunnen verkennen. Our visit to Cape Coast was a powerful and unforgettable experience. Vince was so wonderful! He was so knowledgeable about the history of Ghana as well as its current state. He explained the importance and contributions of each village as we passed through them on the way to Cape Coast, and answered so many questions I had. He also made me feel very safe as a solo female traveler. The car was very comfortable and he really went above and beyond on the small details to ensure it was a great day. This was a memorable day, made all the better by our new best friend Vince. He planned our day excellently, getting ahead of the crowds and quietly navigating all the logistics while we were able to just take in the sights and be with our thoughts. I throughly enjoyed our tour of Cape Coast and Elmina. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and gracious. However, the journey was long, about 4 hours. The roads were bumpy and traffic was bad.

We thoroughly enjoyed our excursion with Schubert to Kakum National Lark for an exhilarating canopy walk followed by somber visits to the Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle. As a local guide, Schubert’s commentary and responses to our many questions helped educate us on life in Ghana and how history has impacted the area. In addition to the above stops, we enjoyed and excellent lunch with drumming for entertainment and roadside stops to try tiger nuts and coconut water straight from the coconut.
