Uw sightseeing in Athene begint met de heuvel van de Akropolis, die het hoogtepunt van uw dag zal zijn. Op de historische heuvel krijgt u de gelegenheid om het Odeon van Herodes Atticus, de tempel van Athena Nike, de monumentale poort (Propylaea), het Erechtheion en natuurlijk het beroemde Parthenon, de hoofdtempel gewijd aan de godin Athena, te zien.
De Propylaea is de monumentale ingang van het heilige gebied gewijd aan Athena, de beschermgodin van de stad. Gebouwd door de architect Mnesicles met Pentelic-marmer, was hun ontwerp avant-garde. Ten zuidwesten van de Propylaea, op een wal die de hoofdingang van de Akropolis beschermt, staat de Ionische tempel van Apteros Nike.
Het Parthenon, de belangrijkste tempel gewijd aan de maagdelijke godin Athena. Het eeuwige symbool van de Atheense democratie en de westerse beschaving.
Het Erechtheion of de Tempel van Athena Polias is een oude Griekse Ionische tempel-telesterion aan de noordkant van de Akropolis, de sterkste en meest heilige plaats in het oude Athene, voornamelijk gewijd aan de godin Athena.
De Tempel van Athena Nike is een tempel op de Akropolis van Athene, gewijd aan de godinnen Athena en Nike. Gebouwd rond 420 voor Christus, is de tempel de vroegste volledig Ionische tempel op de Akropolis.
Het theater van Dionysus Eleuthereus is een groot theater in Athene, dat wordt beschouwd als het eerste theater ter wereld, gebouwd aan de voet van de Akropolis van Athene.
Het Odeon van Herodes Atticus ligt op de zuidelijke helling van de Akropolis en is een stenen theater uit de Romeinse tijd, gebouwd in 161 na Christus ter nagedachtenis aan de vrouw van Herodes Atticus, Regilla. Bekend om zijn uitzonderlijke akoestiek, bood het ooit plaats aan 5000 toeschouwers en organiseerde het muziek- en theatervoorstellingen. Vandaag de dag dient het als een eersteklas locatie voor het Athene Festival, met onvergetelijke evenementen tegen de iconische Akropolis achtergrond.
Na onze rondleiding door de Akropolis gaan we richting de tempel van Zeus, de grootste tempel in de oudheid, gewijd aan de koning van de goden, via de boog van Hadrianus.
Het Akropolis Museum is een modern architectonisch meesterwerk aan de voet van de Akropolis en toont een prachtige collectie artefacten uit de Archaïsche en Klassieke periode, met een speciale nadruk op de 5e eeuw voor Christus Akropolis. Hoogtepunten zijn de Parthenon Gallery, oude sculpturen en de opmerkelijke integratie van een opgegraven Atheense wijk zichtbaar onder de glazen vloeren. Dit bekroonde museum, geopend in 2009, biedt een unieke mix van oude geschiedenis en hedendaags design, waardoor het een must-visit is voor elke geschiedenisliefhebber.
We bezoeken het Panatheense Stadion waar de eerste moderne Olympische Spelen werden gehouden in 1896.
We zullen de wisseling van de wacht (Euzones) bekijken voor het oude paleis, dat tegenwoordig het parlementsgebouw is, boven het centrale plein van Athene.
Het Helleense parlement, in het Grieks bekend als "Voulí ton Ellínon", is het parlement van Griekenland, gevestigd in het oude koninklijke paleis, met uitzicht op het Syntagma-plein. Het parlement is de hoogste democratische instelling die de burgers vertegenwoordigt via een gekozen orgaan van parlementsleden.
Syntagmaplein is het centrale plein van Athene. Het plein is genoemd naar de grondwet die Otto, de eerste koning van Griekenland, moest verlenen na een volksopstand op 3 september 1843.
Het Academiegebouw vormt een van de drie onderdelen in een 'architectuurtrilogie'. Ze werd opgericht bij het Grondwettelijk Besluit van 18 maart 1926 als Academie van Wetenschappen, Geesteswetenschappen en Schone Kunsten.
De Nationale Bibliotheek van Griekenland werd gebouwd aan het einde van de 19e eeuw, als de laatste van de Architectuurtrilogie van Athene, een groep van drie neoklassieke gebouwen die ook de Academie en de Universiteit omvat. Het gebouw is ontworpen door de heer Theophil Hansen.
We gaan verder naar het historische centrum van de stad en rijden de hoogste heuvel van Athene op, de Lycabettus-heuvel, waar u het beste panoramische uitzicht over de stad zult hebben, vanaf de heuvel van de Akropolis tot aan de Egeïsche Zee.

My wife and I had a wonderful day in Athens with Dimitri, our driver. We had one day to see as much of Athens as possible and we were able to make the most of it. Dimitri picked us up promptly at our cruise ship location at 8:30 am, loaded up our bags and we were off to a fabulous tour of Athens. Dimitri was extremely pleasant and friendly and provided us with a great deal of information about the history of Athens as he took us to see many of the sights that the city is famous for, but also some lesser known, but just as important, to include the Panathenaic Stadium and the Parliament Building (former King's Palace). We even got to witness the changing of the guard. He made several stops for photo opportunities along the way, which we much appreciated, and was always ready to take photos of the two of us. We had ample time to explore the Acropolis area when he dropped us off at the main entrance. Next we toured the Acropolis museum, then were off to hike up to the top of Mount Lycabettus, where we had a spectacular 360 degree view of Athens. As our tour came to an end, Dimitri delivered us to our hotel just in time to check in. It was a very full day, but completed in just 6 1/5 hours. We were able to do so much more in a short amount of time with a private driver because he was able to get us to places where buses were unable to get to, plus we had some flexibility with our itinerary. So much value for our $$. Highly recommend this tour and Dimitri, our driver and tour guide.

I had the absolute pleasure of doing two full-day tours with George and his incredible team of drivers and tour guides, and I can confidently say it was one of the best travel experiences of my life. On the first day, we explored the highlights of Athens — including the iconic Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Acropolis Museum, and other stunning historical landmarks. Everything was perfectly timed, and the guide’s knowledge made every moment memorable. The second day took us on a breathtaking journey to Delphi and Thermopylae — where we stood on the very ground where the legendary 300 Spartans faced the Persian army. It was surreal and deeply moving. We also had lunch at a beautiful mountain-top restaurant with an incredible view and top-tier food — truly unforgettable. The Mercedes mini-van was in perfect condition, super comfortable, and made the long drives relaxing. The price was also very reasonable for the level of service we received. I absolutely fell in love with Greece — its landscapes, its food, and its people. I haven’t even left yet, and I already want to come back. Eva, our guide, was a fountain of information. We toured the Parthenon, Acropolis, Acropolis Museum and the Theater of Dionysus. As a former archaeologist, she offered great historical information and entertaining mythological stories of all the spots.
