Efeze: De oude stad Efeze herbergt vele goed bewaarde ruïnes, waaronder de straten uit de Romeinse tijd, openbare gebouwen en particuliere huizen. Bezoekers kunnen de stad verkennen en zich voorstellen hoe het leven was in het Romeinse rijk. Enkele van de hoogtepunten van Efeze zijn de Bibliotheek van Celsus, het Grote Theater, de Tempel van Artemis en de Terrashuizen. De meest spectaculaire plek van Efeze is toch wel de façade van de Bibliotheek van Celsus. Gebouwd tussen 110 en 135 na Christus, had de bibliotheek oorspronkelijk drie verdiepingen, maar een aardbeving verwoestte het gebouw in de 10e eeuw. Andere bezienswaardigheden zijn het theater, de basiliek van St. John, de grot van de zeven slapers, de kerk van Maria, het huis van de Maagd, de Isabey-moskee, het Prytaneion, de synagoge en de tempel van Hadrianus. Alle sites zijn in verschillende staten van verval. Helaas is het enige dat overblijft van de Tempel van Artemis, waarvan wordt beweerd dat hij vier keer zo groot was als het Parthenon, één kolom die in een moerassig bassin staat.
De tempel van Artemis: Efeze was de thuisbasis van een van de zeven wereldwonderen, de tempel van Artemis. Hoewel de tempel niet meer bestaat, zijn de fundering en enkele kolommen bewaard gebleven, wat een idee geeft van de schaal en grootsheid van de oorspronkelijke tempel.
Het pittoreske Kusadasi-kasteel, gebouwd en uitgebreid tussen de 14e en 18e eeuw, ligt op Pigeon Island (Guvercin Adasa), een eilandje dat via een verhoogde weg met Kusadasi is verbonden. Oorspronkelijk gebouwd als een militaire basis, bestaat het fort uit buitenmuren die de tuinen omsluiten en een binnenkasteel met een klein museum.
De Ephesus Terrace Houses, een cluster van oude huizen van twee verdiepingen, verdeeld over drie niveaus, onthullen hoe rijke Romeinen leefden tijdens de gloriedagen van de stad. Glazen vloeren laten je geometrische mozaïeken en nog steeds kleurrijke fresco's bewonderen die op de muren glanzen - het is een klein wonder dat sommigen de plek vergelijken met Pompeii.
Het Huis van de Maagd Maria: is een christelijk bedevaartsoord in Turkije, het wordt verondersteld het laatste huis te zijn van de Maagd Maria, de moeder van Jezus Christus, die daar zou hebben gewoond tot haar Hemelvaart. Het wordt door katholieken beschouwd als een van de heiligste plaatsen ter wereld.

This was one of the best shore excursions we’ve ever taken! Our guide met us right at the cruise port, and everything was perfectly organized from start to finish. We visited the breathtaking Ancient City of Ephesus, where our knowledgeable guide brought history to life with fascinating stories and insights. The visit to the House of the Virgin Mary was peaceful and unforgettable. We also had enough time to explore, take photos, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings without feeling rushed. Kaya was an amazing tour guide! We booked via GetYourGuide not knowing what exactly to expect but we were very happy with the tour. From the very beginning, it felt very personal. He was never annoyed when we asked questions versus other tour guides where this may not have been the case. He had a very good pace overall during the tour making sure to take the perfect number of stops and explain things without word vomiting too much information at once. The tour started with a prompt pickup from the cruise port and communication before hand (morning and day before to make sure we had all the information needed to meet on time and at the right location which was just past the exit of the port). We walked for a couple of minutes to get to the air-conditioned van that took us two and 5 others allowing for a nice small group experience. We were supposed to go to St. Mary's house first but given that the line was really long, he altered the tour so that we wouldn't have to wait so long and so we went to Ephesus' Ancient City first. We had a quick stop at a Turkish souvenir store where we were able to also taste Turkish delight, various types of olive oil and olives, different nuts, and other local delicacies send me proceeded to St Mary's house. This was followed by a quick stop Artemis Temple where he provided more history on what happened. This was then followed by a 30 minute stop at a local rug company where we got to see her Rex were made by hand, how silk was harnessed from silkworm cocoons, and understand more about various types of drugs and materials as well as how to tell whether a rug was machine made versus handmade. He was also willing to bring us to a pottery place as well as another place to get food but he always ask for her opinion on what we wanted to do versus not do rather than forcing anything on us. This tour was one of the top three tours we’ve ever taken. It was due to our amazing guide, Memo. He gave us the big picture historically and then filled in the more specific histories of the specific stops.
