Vertrek vanuit Auckland om 7 uur 's ochtends en je zult een aangename rit maken naar het zuiden over de Bombay Hills naar de rijke melkveebedden van de Waikato en dan naar het oosten. Een korte stop bij een verhoogd uitzicht over de Hauraki-vlaktes, met het Kaimai Coromandel-bereik in de verte, zorgt voor een geweldige groepsfoto.
Het is allemaal gewoon plat rijden over de vlaktes door landbouwgrond naar een niet meer gebruikte zuivelfabriek voor een koffie / thee pauze. Slechts een paar minuten verder is het informatiecentrum in Matamata, dat lijkt op een hobbithuis. Hier kun je een pose maken met het standbeeld van Gollum.
Niet ver nu naar Hobbiton, waar je lokale gids je rondleidt door de filmset met 44 hobbit holes, Bilbo's house - Bag End, the Mill en dubbele boogbrug en feestboom. Sluit af bij de Groene Draak en geniet van een gratis biertje, cider of niet-alcoholisch gemberbier terwijl je geniet van de atmosfeer. Een buffetlunch volgt in de feesttent, naast de Groene Draak.
We vertrekken naar Hobbiton, onze volgende bestemming is Lake Karapiro en de waterkrachtcentrale aan de Waikato-rivier voor een fotostop, voordat we de dam oversteken. De majestueuze 797m Mt Maungatautari (Sanctuary Mountain) doemt op de achtergrond.
Meer glooiende akkers terwijl je door het landelijke stadje Nieuw-Zeeland reist naar het 'Koningland', genoemd naar de Kīngitanga (Maori King-beweging) en zijn volgelingen tijdens de Nieuw-Zeelandse oorlogen van de jaren 1860. Bij Waitomo tijdens je begeleide 45 minuten durende tour door de grot, zul je getuige zijn van de sterrenbeelden van kleine glimmende glimwormen, het is een prachtige kathedraal en intrigerende stalagmieten & stalactieten, voordat je per boot uit deze kalkstenen grot tevoorschijn komt.

We were thoroughly entertained by our guide Danilo as we wandered around Hobiton. The village itself is an amazing example of imagination and ingenuity. I really loved this place which captured the feeling and tone of scenes from the movies. The video messages seen in the bus to and from really introduced the fondness Jackson has for his country. Well worth the visit.
A great tour would advise everyone to visit this place it is a great day out also called at rotarua hot spring where the meal was cooked in front of you by a moaria lady
Keith was on time to pick us up from our hotel. We were quickly on our way to the attractions that we were interested seeing. We traveled in his Jaguar which was comfortable and pleasant. Keith told us about the areas we drove through, but left the information on Hobbiton and Waitomo to the local guides. I thought we were going to be in a small group tour with others and commentary on where we were going and what we would see, so I was surprised that it was just the two of us with a private driver, not really a tour. We have no complaints about the day, we just were expecting something different. We would recommend Keith to anyone who wanted a private driver. He was kind, courteous, thoughtful and professional. Just be aware of what you are reserving.
