Maria Island is een nationaal park voor de oostkust van Tasmanië. De enige permanente bewoners zijn de overvloedige wilde dieren. Er zijn geen auto's of bussen, en we verkennen dit wilde eiland te voet. Volg een reeks paden, verwacht minstens 10 km wandelen over deze dag. We wandelen naar de Painted Cliffs, prachtige zandsteen gebeeldhouwd en gekleurd in wervelende patronen door millennia van getijdenwerking. We vervolgen onze wandeling naar de Fossiele Kliffen, die puur in de oceaan vallen, hun gezichten vol met oud zeeleven en met een prachtig uitzicht over het Freycinet schiereiland. Maria Island is een speciale plaats en beloont degenen die een bezoek brengen aan de geschiedenis van veroordeelden die op de Werelderfgoedlijst staan, een overvloed aan dieren in het wild, spectaculaire kliffen aan de kust en verlaten stranden. Met een gevarieerd aanbod aan hoogtepunten, neemt onze actieve dagtour het allemaal in zich op! Maria Island ligt op slechts 30 minuten met de veerboot van Triabunna, maar het voelt als een wereld weg. Slechts een uur rijden van Hobart naar de veerboot en 30 minuten over het water, brengt ons naar Maria Island - een prachtig nationaal park op het eiland. Een eiland, van een eiland, van een eiland!
Dit is een tour voor de actieve reiziger die graag wandelt en geniet van dit unieke eiland. Er zijn geen auto's op Maria Island en de enige manier om over te steken is op de passagiersveerboot. De belangrijkste hoogtepunten zijn de Painted Cliffs, de Fossil Cliffs, en natuurlijk het wild, de geschiedenis en het prachtige landschap. Maria Island heeft een fascinerende geschiedenis, die onze gidsen met u zullen delen als ze over de paden lopen. De op de Werelderfgoedlijst geplaatste Darlington nederzetting is prachtig bewaard gebleven. De schikking voor Darlington-gevangenen dateert van voor het meer bekende Port Arthur. Het eiland werd in 1972 uitgeroepen tot Nationaal Park.
We genieten van een reeks gemakkelijke wandelingen die de geschiedenis en de belangrijkste hoogtepunten van het eiland verkennen. Te voet hebben we 2 hoofdwandelpaden voor de dag, die een totale afstand van bijna 10 kilometer overbruggen. Vanuit Darlington lopen we de Fossil Cliffs trail en keren terug. De Fossil Cliffs wandeling, brengt ons naar verbazingwekkende kliffen die loodrecht in de oceaan vallen. De uitzichten vanaf de top zijn sensationeel. Zelfs de niet-fervente geologische fan, zal gefascineerd zijn door de overvloed van de verschillende schelp fossielen blootgelegd in de klifwand. Het biedt een fascinerend inzicht in de vroegere omgevingen van Maria Island, samen met uitgestrekte uitzichten op het schiereiland Freycinet.
Daarna lopen we de Painted Cliffs trail en keren terug. De wandeling naar de Painted Cliffs is zacht, meestal vlak en leidt ons naar Hopground Beach met de Painted Cliffs aan het eind. We hebben alle tijd om de kliffen te verkennen, de unieke kenmerken te fotograferen en de vele rotspoelen en prachtige natuur in de omgeving te ontdekken.
Het eiland is een paradijs voor dieren in het wild en een van de beste plekken in Australië om wombats, Tasmaanse duivels, Kaapse onvruchtbare ganzen, kangoeroes en wallaby's te zien. Het vogelleven is ook een attractie met 125 soorten, waaronder alle endemische soorten van Tasmanië, waaronder de bedreigde veertig-spotted pardalote en Swift-papegaai. Zelfs de veerboottocht behoort tot de hoogtepunten van de dag, de wateren die we oversteken zijn ook overvloedig in zeeleven, we houden onderweg onze ogen open voor dolfijnen, zeehonden en pinguïns. Terwijl je op het eiland bent, heb je de mogelijkheid om te zwemmen, fotograferen, de dieren in het wild te observeren en te genieten van het eilandleven terwijl Maria zijn magie op je uitwerkt. Ga met ons mee op deze ontdekkingsdag die rijk is aan ecologische en culturele geschiedenis, de perfecte eilandspeeltuin voor een avontuurlijk dagje uit. Maria Island is een bijzonder wild eiland dat per boot bereikbaar is. Er zijn geen auto's, winkels, oplaadpunten voor apparaten etc. Faciliteiten zijn beperkt.

- We bieden nauwkeurige interpretatie en beperken verstoring van wilde dieren tot een minimum door van de juiste afstanden te kijken en onze gasten te informeren hoe ze dieren met geduld en respect kunnen bekijken. Activiteiten beperken zich altijd tot sporen en promenades om negatieve effecten te minimaliseren.
- We vertrekken Hobart prompt. Als je te laat bent kunnen we niet wachten. Het is erg belangrijk om op tijd te zijn voor uw pick-up, omdat we een tijdlijn hebben om ervoor te zorgen dat we onze veerboot naar Maria Island niet missen. We hebben een zeer beperkte capaciteit om te wachten op late passagiers en het kan zijn dat we de ongelukkige beslissing moeten nemen om zonder u te vertrekken! Als u zich zorgen maakt over uw pick-up - onze telefoonlijn is geopend om 6.30 uur, bel ons dan onmiddellijk op 03 6231 5390.
- Er zijn geen winkels op Maria, en beperkt drinkwater, dus zorg ervoor dat je genoeg water en eten voor je dagje uit meeneemt. Er zal een korte stop zijn op weg naar de veerboot voor wat last minute voedselaankopen - sandwiches / broodjes enz. En er is normaal gesproken een kans om wat afhaalmaaltijden te kopen op de terugreis terug naar Hobart.

Yesterday’s tour on Maria Island was amazing The guides were so friendly and full of knowledge, we learned a lot and saw so many animals! The walks were beautiful, the timing was perfect… everything was just perfect. Thank you!
A lot of walking but a great experience: wallabies, kangaroo, wombats, pademelons and a host of different birds. Guided by Heather from Tours Tasmania who was just the right level of informative, and a terrific guide. She also drove the bus smoothly and safely. Fossil Cliffs, Painted Cliffs and wombats were the highlights. Boat crossing was smooth (for us) and swift. Very enjoyable day - thank you Heather. Recommended trip
Maria Island is beautiful and we saw of wild animals such as wombats, wallabies, paddlymellon and beautiful landscapes. In the other reviews, people wrote that their walk were at a leisure pace and mostly flat surfaces on Maria Island. This was not our experience . We are couples in our 70s and we travelled to Africa, South America & Asia frequently. This day tour is one of the toughest we experienced. If you are 65+, read the fine print before signing up if this tour is suitable for you. We have a guide that is not helpful. He gave minimal information about the island & wild life. He started walking away before we had a chance to ask further questions . He looked annoyed if you asked him to repeat. He had no consideration and patience for slower walker. Starting from the walk from the pier to Painted Cliff, he was 1/2 mile ahead of us. We had to run to catch up. Afterwards, I asked if he could slow down a bit for us to catch up. His response was "NO & NO !" and if we could not catch up we should be on our own and wait for him at the pier. The walk was mostly upslope with a few flat surfaces. We were only allowed a 20 min lunch and bathroom break. During the break, he was hurrying us to go. We felt like we were in a boot camp. We felt rushed and stress the whole trip. We did not appreciated of how we were treated.

Maria Island is one of our most loved tours, and we are glad the island's beauty and wildlife came through for you. Our Maria Island tour covers 10-12 kilometres of walking over approx. five hours, and we do describe it as an active day tour suited to guests who are comfortable with that level of activity. When our guides sense that a guest is finding the pace difficult, they do have the option to offer an alternative, to sit out the second walk and relax in the beautiful Darlington area, and then rejoin us ready for departure. We understand this may not have felt like a welcome solution in the moment, and we are sorry if it came across that way. Our guides genuinely want every guest to enjoy their day, and they do need to ensure we walk at a pace that achieves the itinerary. We are truly sorry that the communication between you and our guide did not land as it should have on the day. We wish you many more wonderful adventures in your travels.
Very picturesque, great tour guide, very tired from walking but definitely worth it
So, a long day, but worth it for the views. Some overseas visitors were more interested in the wildlife, wombats, echidnas, roos / wallabies / paddymelons, they got to see the lot. A fair bit of walking, as advertised, but at a leisurely pace. Good guide, good commentary, a good day.

Very organised. Guide was excellent and very knowledgeable. Lucas was very caring with the slower walkers. Not many animals as it was too hot and dry but the guide kept looking.
We experienced strong winds, torrential rain, and clear skies on the island 😂 We were lucky to see wombets and wallabies. This trip not only offers the fun of animal hunting but also allows you to enjoy various scenic views. Highly recommended!

This was a great mix of history, spectacular scenery, and wildlife viewing! Matt was an excellent and enthusiastic guide, leading us on 2 walks to different parts of Maria Island. The scenery was incredibly gorgeous, particularly the Painted Cliffs, and the history of the different stages of convict occupation of the island was really interesting. We were lucky enough to see forester kangaroos, pademelons, and wombats!

An active day walking over 12km to view the fossil beds, Darlington convict station/settlement and the coloured cliffs. The bonus was our guide had a great knowledge of the island and native flora and fauna and the best places to locate these, especially on the windy day we experienced. Lucky enough to sight a critically endangered swift parrot drinking and bathing in a creek. Lots of wombats, Bennet's wallabies and Paddymelons to top it off. Probably one of the best day trips I’ve been on.
