Onze vriendelijke Engelssprekende chauffeur-gids haalt je op bij je hotel in Florence om je dag te beginnen met PISA, een rustig en gezellig stadje dat herinnert aan het verleden van de republiek Pisan. Het riviersysteem in Pisa verhinderde dat het tegen het einde van het Romeinse rijk in verval raakte. We zullen ons concentreren op het Piazza dei Miracoli, een UNESCO Werelderfgoed. De Duomo is een middeleeuwse kathedraal met massieve bronzen deuren en zijn gouden plafond, zijn middeleeuwse preekstoel en zijn zwart en wit marmeren interieur zijn adembenemend ... Het nabijgelegen ronde gebouw is de doopkapel, met een achthoekig lettertype dat contrasterend is en een grote ronde binnenruimte . De scheve toren was de campanile (klokkentoren voor de kathedraal) begon te leunen kort na de voltooiing ervan in 1173.
Na een stop van ongeveer 1 uur zullen we vertrekken naar SAN GIMIGNANO. De stad werd gesticht als een klein dorp in de 3e eeuw voor Christus door de Etruskische en is beroemd vandaag vanwege zijn wijn (Vernaccia) en architectuur. San Gimignano wordt vaak 'de stad van de torens' genoemd, omdat de stad 14 torens uit de Middeleeuwen heeft kunnen behouden ... een echte filmset! Geniet van een informatieve wandeling met onze chauffeur door de smalle straatjes van deze prachtige middeleeuwse parel.
Is het nu tijd om door te gaan naar SIENA, maar onderweg willen we een snelle stop maken naar MONTERIGGIONI, een van de bekendste en klassiekste nederzettingen in Toscane. Dit dorp werd gebouwd op een heuvel bij de Sienese tussen 1213 en 1219 met uitzicht op de oude Romeinse weg, de Via Cassia
Het historische centrum van Siena is uitgeroepen tot Werelderfgoed door de UNESCO. De torenhoge skyline is de trots, gedomineerd door de gotische kathedraal (Duomo) en de strakke naald van de Torre del Mangia en toch is de schelpvormige Piazza del Campo waarschijnlijk de meeste aandacht en faam. Het is te zien in films, foto's en reclamecampagnes. De stenen bedekken het lieflijk glooiende land eronder en zijn getuige van vele gebeurtenissen in de geschiedenis, maar het meest intrigerende is de paardenrace "Palio", een van de belangrijkste dingen in het leven van een Siena-inwoner. Op het piazza op 2 juli en 16 augustus is er een bareback paardenrace die voor het eerst werd opgenomen in 1283, maar mogelijk zijn oorsprong heeft gehad in de Romeinse militaire training. Niet te missen het Palazzo Pubblico (stadhuis) dat een groot werk is van architectuur en huizen ook een belangrijk museum van Siena.
Op de terugweg naar Florence heeft u de kans om een deel van het charmante CHIANTI-GEBIED te bezoeken, dat wordt gekenmerkt door glooiende heuvels, bezaaid met wijngaarden, cipressen, olijfbomen en kleine steden. Bezoek Panzano en Greve, twee van de mooiste steden van de Chianti - als het u tijd is om te stoppen bij een wijnmakerij kunt u genieten van uitstekende wijnen en extra vergine olijfolie.Terug naar Florence in de middag met volle buiken, een gelukkig hart en geweldige herinneringen ...

This was an amazing experience to be able to see other parts of Tuscany and get a break from the 15 000 steps a day. Being that it was private, we were able to customize the trip being that my wife's pregnant. He drove us everywhere we needed to go to make things easy as well as made great recommendations of must see places and Gelato stands.

We enjoyed our day in Tuscany. Alex, our driver, was on time, friendly, knowledgeable and made the experience to our liking. We went first to the Michelangelo plaza, across the river, where we had not been yet for a great view of Florence. We chose not to go to Pisa, for more time in the Chianti area and wine tasting. We drove to Monteriggiani, a small walled town, which had a recent restoration. Throughout the day, all buildings were a way to feel how itight have been in medieval times. Then was Siena, with its massive, unfinished, cathedral, and the unique shell shaped plaza. We went wine tasting and lunch at Corbacci, an exclusive experience, as we get to pair wine with meal. Our host Agnes guided us through the tasting and with a passion for wine. The scenery of this place is all we have in mind when we think Tuscany. Lunch was great, no surprise. We left and headed.to St Gminiano, another well preserved medieval town, though with a different flare. Alex drove thru the countryside for more spectacular views. Then back to Florence, already planning our next visit.

We splurged on a private car for our day trip from Florence to see the highlights of Tuscany. Massimo picked us up at our hotel and provided the perfect combination of structured and free time to explore Siena and other gems. Definitely worth the extra cost to have a car and driver to ourselves.

Alex was phenomenal! He picked us up and took us to 3 medieval towns and 2 wineries. His knowledge of the area was quite extensive! He was really kind, patient and had the best recommendations both along our route and in Florence. We sincerely enjoyed our day with him and would book with him again if we had more time!
