In de ochtend wordt u opgehaald bij uw hotel in Caïro en bezoekt u het klooster van Sint Simon, ook bekend als de Grotkerk van Zabbaleen. Het is gelegen in de Mokattam Mountain, een korte rit door de zogenaamde “Garbage City” – een grote populatie van vuilnisophalers of Zabbaleen die er wonen. Verschillende kerken zijn ingebouwd in de grotten gevonden in Mokattam, eerst bezoeken we, Saint Simon de Tanner Hall en St. Mark's Church. Deze enorme grot werd ontdekt in het jaar 1974. Het lag vol met honderden tonnen stenen, zelfs tot aan het plafond van de grot (die 17 meter hoog is van de grond), en werd later voorbereid om twee opslagplaatsen te bevatten: 1. De bovenste verdieping is de St. Simon de Tanner Hall, met een capaciteit van 2000 personen voor spirituele bijeenkomsten. De muren zijn versierd met vele prachtige foto's gegraveerd op de rotsen die scenario's uit de Bijbel voorstellen Daarna gaan we verder en bezoeken de kathedraal van de Maagd Maria en St. Simon de Tanner. Na de tour transfer terug naar uw hotel.

De kerk is gewijd aan Sergius en Bacchus, soldaten-heiligen die in de 4e eeuw in Syrië gemarteld werden door de Romeinse keizer Maximina. Het meest interessante kenmerk is de crypte waar Maria, Jozef en het kindje Jezus zouden hebben gerust. De crypte is 10 meter diep en staat vaak onder water als de Nijl hoog staat.
De Hangende Kerk is genoemd naar de locatie boven een poortgebouw van het Babylonfort, het Romeinse fort in Koptisch Caïro (Oud Caïro); het schip hangt boven een doorgang. De kerk wordt benaderd via negenentwintig treden; vroege reizigers naar Caïro noemden het "de Trappenkerk". Het landoppervlak is sinds de Romeinse tijd met ongeveer zes meter gestegen, waardoor de Romeinse toren grotendeels onder de grond ligt begraven, waardoor de visuele impact van de verhoogde ligging van de kerk wordt verminderd.
De Ben Ezra-synagoge (Hebreeuws: בית כנסת בן עזרא; Arabisch: معبد بن عزرا), ook wel de El-Geniza-synagoge (בית כנסת אל גניזה) of de synagoge van de Le vantines (al-Shamiyin), bevindt zich in de Fustat-deel van het oude Caïro, Egypte. Volgens de lokale folklore bevindt het zich op de plek waar baby Mozes werd gevonden.
GROTE CHRISTELIJKE GEMEENSCHAPPEN ZIJN NIET overvloedig aanwezig in het door moslims gedomineerde Egypte. Een van de meest bevolkte groepen is de afvalopruimer Zabbaleen, die hun Koptische geloofsovertuigingen heeft behouden en de grootste christelijke kerk in het Midden-Oosten heeft gevestigd in het klooster van Saint Simon.

Garbage City is a part of Cairo not all visitors experience. Winding through the city on our way to Cave Church was interesting & fascinating. I'm sure I've not seen so much bagged garbage in one place! The drive through the city was worth it. Cave Church was inspiring & impressive, with scenes from Scripture carved inside the walls, & ampitheater style seating. I'm glad we didn't miss out on this opportunity.
Dina loves her country and has spent her life learning all she can to share her knowledge with others. We traveled with our 9 year old son and his favorite part of the tour was our trip to the oil store. Learning and creating our own scents, who knew?! My husband and I enjoyed seeing inside the church cave, hanging church and synagogue. Our driver was very kind and safe. We did feel like Dina was preoccupied at times and we would suggest guides pointing things out while driving (mosques, ancient artifacts, etc) as we felt rude continually asking what things are that we are driving by.

Following an excellent tour the previous day with our guide. Dina, we decided to book this tour also. There is so much to see in Cairo, but we are really delighted that we took the time to visit the hanging Church, the underground church, and the Nunnery of St. George. This historic and unique area is steeped in the atmosphere of faith and prayers over centuries. The history, architecture and art are so full of meaning that will be potentially missed without a guide. And we were grateful to Dina who Is knowledgeable and passionate about the history, as well as being a lovely person.
