Het Koninklijk Paleiscomplex werd opgericht in 1782 en bestaat niet alleen uit koninklijke en troonzalen, maar ook uit een aantal overheidskantoren en de beroemde Tempel van de Smaragden Boeddha. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 218.000 vierkante meter en is omgeven door vier muren, 1900 meter lang. Nadat koning Rama I in 1782 de troon besteeg, werd het paleis gebouwd. Daarvoor was het koninklijk paleis en het centrum van bestuur gevestigd in Thonburi, op de westelijke oever van de Chao Phraya rivier. Om verschillende redenen vond de nieuwe koning de voormalige hoofdstad ongeschikt en besloot een nieuwe hoofdstad te vestigen aan de andere kant van de rivier. Op zijn koninklijk bevel werd een paleis gebouwd dat niet alleen als residentie maar ook als plaats van administratieve kantoren diende. Het koninklijke complex staat sindsdien bekend als Het Koninklijk Paleis. De twee vroegste gebouwen die in het complex werden opgericht waren de Dusit Haha Prasat Troonzaal en de Phra Maha Monthian.

Er zijn strenge dresscode dus wees voorbereid! I hired a guide who unfortunately didn't speak very good English, I hardly understood the explanation of the place, although she was kind. And the temple was beautiful.
