Deze ooit uitstekende hoofdstad, op 80 km afstand van Ayutthaya, werd in 1767 verpletterd door de Birmese uitrusting en is momenteel een UNESCO-werelderfgoed. Een groot aantal paleizen, tempels en chedi's staan nog overeind. In 1782 veranderde Ayutthaya in de hoofdstad van Thailand. De belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden versmelten de enorme bronzen beelden van Vihara Phra Mongkhon Bophit, bovendien Wat Phra Sri Sanphet en Wat Yai Chai Mang Khon.
Het is een grote bronzen zittende Boeddha-afbeelding of Phra Mongkhon Bophit is een van de grootste bronzen Boeddha-afbeeldingen in Thailand met zijn afmetingen van 9,5 meter over de schoot en een hoogte van 12,5 meter. Het Boeddha-beeld zit in de positie van Subduing Mara. Tijdens de tweede val van Ayutthaya werden het gebouw en het beeld zwaar verwoest door vuur. Het huidige beeld van Vihara en Boeddha is gereconstrueerd en gerenoveerd onder het bewind van koning Rama V. Het open gebied ten oosten van de Vihara was voorheen Sanam Luang, waar koninklijke crematieceremonies plaatsvonden.
Een van de belangrijkste tempels in Ayutthaya, Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon heeft een lange en illustere geschiedenis. En in tegenstelling tot veel van de andere oude locaties in Ayutthaya, is dit nog steeds een actieve tempel waar monniken verblijven. Thaise mensen bezoeken Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon om niet alleen respect te tonen aan Boeddha, maar ook om hulde te brengen aan een van de meest gerespecteerde koningen in de Thaise geschiedenis, koning Naresuan de Grote.
Wat Phra Sri Sanphet ligt op het stadseiland in het werelderfgoedpark van Ayutthaya in het district Pratu Chai. Het is sinds 5 maart 1935 door de Fine Arts Department geregistreerd als een nationale historische site. Dit klooster was de belangrijkste tempel van Ayutthaya en gelegen op het terrein van het Grand Palace. Het diende als model voor de Tempel van de Smaragdgroene Boeddha in Bangkok.
Wat Lokaya Sutha, "de tempel van de aarde" bevindt zich in de buurt van de noordwestpunt van het historische eiland in de buurt van het oude koninklijk paleis en Wat Phra Si Sanphet. Hoogtepunt van het klooster is het 42 meter lange liggende Boeddha-beeld, meestal gedrapeerd in oranje doek. Afgezien van de centrale prang die zich in redelijk goede staat bevindt, blijft er vandaag weinig meer over dan de basis van de hoofdgebouwen.
Wat Mahathat (Tempel van de Grote Overblijfselen) bevindt zich bijna midden in het centrum van Ayutthaya. Behalve het symbolische centrum waar de relikwieën van de Boeddha waren verankerd, was Wat Mahathat ook de residentie van de Opperste Patriarch of leider van de Thaise boeddhistische monniken. De tempel wordt vermoedelijk gebouwd in de 14e eeuw na Christus (de vroege Ayutthaya-periode).
Bang Pa-in Palace is een oud paleis uit het tijdperk van Ayutthaya. Dit paleis werd gebouwd door koning Prasart Thong en vervolgens werd het herbouwd door koning Mongkut nadat het lange tijd was verlaten. Het paleis is verdeeld in 2 zone één is een binnenzone die door de koninklijke familie kan worden gebruikt als rustplaats en de andere zone is een buitenzone die openstaat voor normale mensen en toeristen. Na een aangename dag arriveert u om 17.00 uur terug in Bangkok.

Your visit to the breathtaking historical area of Ayutthaya sounds like it was a deeply fulfilling experience. With better planning compared to your last rushed visit, you were able to fully appreciate the beauty and significance of this site. The grounds and the structures, so distinct from anything in America, offer a unique glimpse into a rich historical tapestry. Learning about Ayutthaya's past as an old capital of Thailand and exploring its stunning temples and stupas seem to have been particularly rewarding. Your recommendation for anyone in Thailand to make the short trip from Bangkok to visit this remarkable site is a testament to its cultural and historical value.
The main island is roughly 3 x 2 km. While walking is feasible between nearby sites, using a bike, car, or tour is better for broader exploration, especially as some key sites are off the island. The heat can be intense, even for those accustomed to Bangkok's climate. In Ayutthaya, temperatures can feel much hotter than they are. Essentials include a hat, sunglasses, and taking frequent breaks. Mornings, particularly between 8-11am, are quieter at the sites. After this, they get crowded with tour groups. An early start is advisable. The island features a mix of open spaces, sites, and commercial areas, with cafes never far away. Many unticketed minor sites and evening attractions make it worthwhile to stay overnight. Surprisingly, there's almost no information available on-site about the ancient ruins, not even a paper map. It's best to research online or through guidebooks beforehand. Depending on your interest in either ruins or active temples, plan accordingly. My top ruin picks include Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Maha That, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram. The Chantharakasem National Museum, St Joseph's Church, Baan Hollanda, and Wat Phanan Choeng Worawihan are also worth visiting. If driving, approaching the island from the west is preferable, possibly stopping at St Joseph's and Wat Chaiwatthanaram. On the return to Bangkok, consider visiting the Bang Sai royal folk arts and crafts center, which offers unique handicrafts not found in Bangkok. Remember, it closes by 4.30 pm.
Very interesting if you love ancient temples! They are scattered throughout the entire city, so you can drive around, take a tuk-tuk, or join a guided tour. They are very beautiful and atmospheric; take the time to walk around each temple and appreciate it. It's a day trip, or you could consider staying overnight and spending an entire weekend here; the modern city is also quite pleasant.
Ayutthaya stands as a testament to the grandeur of Thailand's past, just an hour's journey from Bangkok. As Siam's longest-serving capital, it is dotted with numerous ancient temples, their ruins at every turn hinting at a city that once glimmered with gold. Our guide, during a half-day tour, narrated the history leading up to the city's fall in wartime. Although the 25-carat gold that once clad these temples is gone, the remaining structures still convey the splendor of bygone eras. Ayutthaya remains an essential visit for anyone wishing to delve into the majestic history of Bangkok's surrounds.
