De Trigonion Tower staat ook bekend als het balkon van Thessaloniki. Het biedt een prachtig uitzicht op de akropolis van de stad. Tijdens een dagtour door Thessaloniki is een stop bij Moni Vlatadon (klooster van Vlatadon) een van de meest memorabele momenten. Het 14e-eeuwse Byzantijnse klooster ligt verscholen in de rustige Bovenstad, op een heuvel net binnen de oude stadsmuren en wordt verondersteld de exacte plek te markeren waar Sint-Paulus in 51 n.Chr. tot de Thessalonicenzen predikte. Van een eenvoudige steen in de kleine kerk wordt traditioneel gezegd dat hij daar stond waar de apostel stond. Je komt aan na een korte rit van het stadscentrum, en de beloning is onmiddellijk : een prachtig panoramisch uitzicht over de daken, de Thermaïsche Golf en – op heldere dagen – helemaal tot aan de Olympusberg. De hoofdkerk, gewijd aan de Transfiguratie, is prachtig versierd met goed bewaarde fresco's, en de hele plaats voelt rustig en bewoond omdat het nog steeds een actief klooster is dat behoort tot het oecumenisch patriarchaat. Bescheiden jurk is vereist (schouders en knieën bedekt).
Bezoek de Sint-Demetriuskerk , een van de oudste en belangrijkste byzantijnse kerken in Thessaloniki, bewonder de fresco's en ga naar beneden bij de catacomben om een deel van de geschiedenis van de stad te zien. Op dinsdag is de crypte gesloten en kunnen we alleen de kerk bezoeken
Tijdens een dagtour door Thessaloniki is een stop bij het Forum Romanum (ook bekend als de oude Agora) een fascinerende stap terug in het Romeinse tijdperk van de stad. Midden in het hart van het moderne centrum, op de kruising van de straten Olympou en Filippou, was deze grote archeologische site in de openlucht ooit het bruisende commerciële, politieke en sociale centrum van het Romeinse Thessaloniki, met de belangrijkste gebouwen die in de 2e eeuw na Christus werden gebouwd.
Betreed het Venizelou metrostation museum en bewonder de Via Egnatia overblijfselen die de glorieuze Romeinse tijd van Thessaloniki laten zien.
Bewonder de overblijfselen van de beroemde Galeriusboog die de Via Egnatia passeerde, de oude 'snelweg' die Rome met Costantinopel verbond.
U betreedt de beroemdste bezienswaardigheid van Thessaloniki, dat is een museum en geniet van het fantastische uitzicht op de top.
Na een kijkje te hebben genomen bij het standbeeld van Philippus de 2e verhuizen we om de eeuwige koning van Macedonië, Alexander de Grote op zijn trotse paard Vuchefalas te bewonderen op de meest gefotografeerde plek van Thessaloniki.
De vader van Alexander de Grote staat stevig op voetstuk tegenover de Witte Toren, alsof we zien hoe trots hij is op zijn zoon en de ongelooflijke dingen die hij heeft bereikt.
Een uniek gebouw in zijn soort, de enige cirkelvormige christelijke kerk in de wereld, met prachtige mozaïeken en bijzondere geschiedenis van een gebouw dat veranderde van een Romeinse tempel, naar een christelijke kerk, naar een moskee en terug naar een kerk. Op dinsdag is het museum gesloten zodat we alleen de buitenkant te zien krijgen.

Great experience. Giannis picked us up from our hotel, provided waters and drove us around the city and gave us a 5 hour tour in which we experienced the full city. All the top places a traveler needs to see while in Thessaloniki. Highly recommend.

Our driver and tour guide, Yannis, picked us up right on time from our hotel, the Electra Palace, in downtown Thessaloniki. Yannis is a life long resident of the city and he speaks perfect English. His enthusiasm for the city’s history was clear throughout the tour. His new Citroen van was cool and comfortable as we ventured from one amazing site to another. With a friendly and engaging personality, Yannis made it easy and fun for us to learn so much as we visited each of the main historical sites covering thousands of years of history. We finished the day with a very special treat. Yannis knows where to find the best bougatsa in the city. It was an incredible treat warm from the oven. Yannis was wonderful! I really can't say enough. He adjusted the tour to be at our pace as my husband was struggling with a bad leg. He worked to get us close to things and make it easier for him. He gave us so much information and history without overwhelming us and making it interesting and fun. He told us about greek life, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. He even went out of us way and after I had expressed in an interest, got me a Bougatsa to try! I would highly recommend Yannis. Being a local I had never been on a guided tour before. However, I knew that I hadn't visited some important sites of my city and as for the ones that I had, I just had a rather vague idea of their history as I had visited them when I was a schoolchild. This was the reason why I decided to look for a guided tour and I have to say that the whole experience exceeded my expectations! Giannis made sure that by the end of the tour I had formed a thorough understanding of the history of the city and instead of just providing me with information about each sight he actually helped me realize how some sights are even interrelated and interconnected in the continuum of the history of Thessaloniki. I absolutely loved the tour. Giannis is really good at capturing your attention and keeping it throughout the tour and, being a teacher, I have to say that this is a really difficult thing! I would wholeheartedly recommend this tour both to locals who want to become more familiar with their city's history and of course to tourists and travelers who want to go off the beaten track and seek for meaningful experiences.
