Voltooi uw Galle-dagtour met een bezoek aan de verbazingwekkende Stilt Fishermen in Weligama. De vissers zitten op een dwarsstang vastgebonden aan een verticale paal die in het koraalrif en de stelt wordt geplant met één hand terwijl ze zitten en het uitvoeren van hengel en lijnvissen met de andere hand. De praktijk van paalvissen begon ongeveer 50 jaar na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog toen vissers ontdekten dat het vissen op de rotsen die boven de zee uitstaken niet voldoende was om vissen in grote aantallen te vangen, dus begonnen ze afgedankte metalen pijpen in het rif te planten en gebruik ze om tegenaan te leunen en te vissen. In de loop van de tijd ontdekten de vissers dat hout net zo goed werkte als de polen ontwikkelde in de meer moderne versies die we vandaag zien. Het is een unieke aanblik en een die je niet mag missen als we toekijken en ons vergapen aan de behendigheid van de mens om elke hindernis te overwinnen.

Na zojuist de zielverlammende kreupelheid van Unawatuna te hebben ervaren, was dit strand precies wat we nodig hadden. Vrede, eenzaamheid en prachtige natuur.
Nederlands Fort van Galle - Laten we ons, na te hebben geleerd over de pure vastberadenheid van de mensen door middel van de kunst getoond in het Tsunami Fotomuseum, naar het Nederlandse Fort van Galle begeven. Met een tumultueuze geschiedenis die teruggaat tot enkele eeuwen, maakte de strategische locatie van de stad het tot een hub voor handel over zee en vervolgens een landingsplaats voor de koloniale heersers van het eiland. Een fort werd gebouwd om bescherming en behoud van de stad de Portugezen te verzekeren in het begin van de 16e eeuw en vervolgens uitgebreid versterkt door de Nederlanders in de 17e eeuw. Oorspronkelijk was het fort een aarden constructie met palissades, een wal en drie bastions en een gracht eromheen. Onder de controle van de Nederlanders bouwden ze onneembare vestingwerken met koraal en granieten stenen en het Fort leek op een klein aangelegd ommuurd stadje met een rechthoekig rasterpatroon van straten vol lage huizen met gevels en veranda's.

Tsunami Photo Museum - De volgende stop is bij het Tsunami Photo Museum in Talwatte. Na de verwoestende Tsunami van 2004, die samen met vele andere landen Sri Lanka trof, is het herstelproces traag, lang en moeilijk verlopen. De kustgebieden werden het zwaarst getroffen en herontwikkeling gaat nog steeds door met zowel fysieke als psycho-sociale revalidatie als een van de belangrijkste gebieden. Om het proces te vergemakkelijken, zodat mensen kunnen praten en articuleren over de verschrikkingen van de tsunami en om een plek te bieden waar schoonheid en kunst nog steeds in overvloed is, werd het Tsunami Photo Museum opgericht. Het is een volledig liefdadig museum dat gratis toegang biedt en tekeningen, schilderijen en foto's heeft - kunst in al zijn glorie - om een verhaal te vertellen van elk individu dat door de Tsunami van 2004 is geleefd.

Turtle Hatchery - Uw dagtrip naar Galle begint met een bezoek aan Turtle Hatchery. Sri Lanka is de thuisbasis van veel verschillende dieren in het wild, inclusief het leven in zee en van de zeven soorten zeeschildpadden in de wereld; vijf van hen zoeken hun weg naar Sri Lanka om het hele jaar door te nestelen. Deshan was a wonderful tour guide, and showed me all around Galle and the surrounding areas. We were able to visit a number of places including some local beaches, the Galle Fort, a beautiful jewelry store, and a turtle hatchery. Everything was made so convenient and easy, and Deshan went above and beyond to ensure I had an enjoyable and fun day. I had a pleasant experience. The pickup was on time and Mr.Deshan was kind and patient. Some places were not included and we skipped Gem factory. Be prepared for scorching heat. Food was very bad in quality and taste.

Had a great day out with Chamika. So many experiences packed in to one day - beautiful beaches, historic sites and a really interesting insight into Ayurvedic herbs and their uses. The ride was comfortable and cool and the lunch we chose (rice and curry set) was authentic and served while the waves lapped only meters away. Highly recommend this one day tour with Chamika.

After completing a 7-day tour of Sri Lanka, we booked a day tour from Colombo to Galle, as this part of the country was not on our tour itinerary. Pick up at our hotel was seamless. We are so glad that we visited this part of the country. The day was jam-packed with highlights, and our driver/guide Deshan was excellent. He was knowledgeable and friendly and adjusted the tour to suit our needs. He provided some fantastic suggestions for other stops. The Dutch Fort was much bigger than I expected and fascinating to explore. The gem museum was very informative. The staff there were not all about just trying to make a sale. The tsunami museum was somber, and the turtle hatchery was brilliant. It was a great final day in Sri Lanka
