Must visit the Olive Mill museum!

I would recommend this trip to anyone visiting Kos! We were picked up from our hotel by a coach which took us to Kardamena. I did have to WhatsApp the company the day before to confirm meeting point and time of pickup, but they were extremely quick to reply which was great. The coach ride took about 1 hour from Kos Town. The boat journey from Kardamena to Nisyros was about an hour and a half, but the views were fab. We took another coach from Nisyros port up to the volcanic crater. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and shared lots of interesting facts about the island. We had 45 minutes to walk around the crater- which did feel like enough time. The sulfur fumes were very pungent so be warned if you have a sensitive nose!! It was amazing to be able to walk around the crater- such a cool experience. We then got the coach back to the port where we had a short tour around the village and were given free time to explore (about 2 hours). Our guide have us some helpful recommendations of restaurants we could try for lunch. We walked up to see the monastery which had some fantastic views of the island. It was a steep walk up more than 100 stairs and €5 entry per person. It’s very small, but we thought it was worth it while we were there. I would highly recommend visiting the Olive Mill museum. The lovely young lady who spoke to us shared that it was her Great Grandfather’s mill, and explained the process of making olive oil. It was a lovely bit of history tucked away in the village streets, but well worth a visit. I’d also recommend trying the volcano flavoured ice cream!

The volcano and nysros tour

Then pick up was prompt a comfortable bus ride the bus was pleasant, there is a short walk where the bis drops off to the harbour you are taken by your tour guide. We were split in to two groups English and German my itinerary changed from visiting the volcano to staying in the village first the walk is uphill again taken by the tour guide we stopped at a restaurant where we were left to our own devices we had food there which was pleasant not a huge variety bit well sheltered by very lovely trees. There are some shops to browse through and a monestry you get look at and the harbour has lovely panoramic views. The up by coach to the volcano where there is a pleasant cafe after walking down in to the crator. The tour guide was very pleasant and full of information and the boat trip to the Islamd was very nice too plenty of seating for everyone you are on the boat for just over an hour each way. Then a short walk to the main bus station to catch your transfer back to hotel if you booked this.

Absolutely fantastic trip

This trip was incredible, you could get picked up at the hotel but we were so close anyway we walked to the marina, got text confirmation details at 10pm the evening before, probably because we were so close. The boat trip took under an hour and our guide Martha was so helpful and knowledgeable and just lovely. The trip to the volcano was just enough time to walk round the crater and get a drink before being back on the bus. The little town was so gorgeous, Martha guided us through as the streets were narrow and recommended places and dishes to try for lunch. We walked up to the monastery which was 130 steps but some in the shade so not too bad, beautiful views and very special place. On the boat on the way back we saw flying fish! Can't recommend this trip enough, used a 30% discount code so it was such good value for money!

Not recommended

Unfortunately, we didn't like the tour at all. The transfer went without any problems. Arriving in the city, there were suddenly hundreds of people there who were being divided up among various tour guides and ships. Everything felt like a mass processing operation. Unfortunately, the ship was not recommended at all either. The trip lasted approx. 1.5 hours (it swayed a lot, the crew can't help that), the benches were more than uncomfortable, it was mega hot, little shade... Unfortunately unbearable on the ship. The crew didn't say a single word. You were sitting there packed in tight like on a cattle transport. Arriving at the island, you were led through the city and everything was promoted (restaurants, ice cream parlor, monastery, etc.). That felt a little like a sales tour to us. After that, we then had 1.5 hours of free time in the city. And after that, we went by bus (20-30 minutes) to the crater. There, in turn, we had 25 minutes of free time. But it was also completely sufficient, because it was simply unbearably hot there. After that, another 20-30 minutes to the ship, then 1.5 hours back by ship, and then the transfer back to the hotel. Not recommended for us. More time for unbearable transfers than anything else. The pickup from the hotel was positive, as was the fact that all the people were divided into tour guides speaking different languages.

Nice to visit the Nisyros crater, but an exhausting excursion.

We booked this excursion through Tripadvisor because of its 4.6 rating, and our satisfaction was bittersweet. The organization works, but the services are in old transport vehicles, and most are without air conditioning or it only half works, so we were very hot. The positive part is the guides, who are professional and experienced. Congratulations. The experience was as follows: Instead of a hotel pickup, they picked us up at 8:10 AM at Dolphin Square in Kos, a 7-minute walk from the hotel. 45 min. by bus to the departure port. The bus drops us off in the town and we have to walk 8 minutes to the departure boat. The distribution was well organized, but they made us board a boat with a different name than the one specified on the voucher. There is no problem with that because they go to the same place, except that it is an older boat and it takes 1h and 30 minutes to reach the port of Nisyros. If you want shade, there is an indoor area, but in August we were very hot, especially on the return trip. Here, 1h of the visit is already gone, which is not on the island; it is spent on the boat. Our boat was the last one to leave the port. This meant that since we arrived last in Nisyros, they changed the order of the program. We had 2h and 15 minutes to visit the town, the monastery (€2/person cash only), and eat at 12:30 PM, because the bus to the crater left at 1:30 PM (they are punctual). The guide walks you around for the first 30 minutes and explains the town up to the central square and then to the monastery (for those who want to visit it). This meant we could not swim at the town's little beach, which was our plan before taking the boat back. The buses to the crater have insufficient air conditioning. 30 minutes of being hot. Beautiful views and the guide explains everything interesting about the island to us. The impressive crater. The 5€/person can be paid in cash or by card. There is a viewpoint where you can see the crater. Since we were the ones visiting it at 2:00 PM on August 14th, we found it without other tourists. Beautiful panoramic view without people. We went down to the center of the crater with closed-toe shoes and good soles, because the ground gives off heat and at some point you breathe the typical smell of sulfur. The volcano is worth the experience, but you have to suffer the quality of the transport, the heat, and having the order of the program changed on you. A "great" experience 🤗

Nisyros Island and the Volcano

Great day with the family!!!! Expect a 1-hour boat ride before arriving on this very pretty little island. The people are welcoming, and the prices in the restaurants are very affordable. The volcano is really a must-see and a must-do!! It's €5 for adults and free for children under 12. We can stand in the center of the Stefanos crater, really great!!! We have very fond memories of it. We went through the "Miranda Tour" agency and they were really great for the organization and the price.
