Lantau Island wordt vaak aangeduid als de ‘longen van Hong Kong’ omdat het zo groen en onderontwikkeld is. Maak een volledige dag privé wandeltocht door Lantau met je persoonlijke Gids en bezoek de ontzagwekkende Big Buddha en het heerlijk schilderachtige paaldorp Tai O. Lantau Island wordt vaak de ‘Lungs of Hong Kong’ genoemd omdat het zo groen en onderontwikkeld is. Volg met ons een rondleiding door Lantau en bezoek de ontzagwekkende Grote Boeddha en het wonderlijk schilderachtige paaldorp Tai O. Onze privé Lantau Tours duren 7 uur, 8 uur met ophalen van een hotel. Je privétour in Lantau begint met een ritje met de Ngong Ping-kabelbaan. Je wordt getrakteerd op het mooiste uitzicht op Lantau Country Park en de luchthaven terwijl je 25 minuten over de achterkant van het eiland reist. Onze bestemming is de beroemde Big Buddha. Hier leer je over het boeddhisme, beklim je de 268 treden naar de Boeddha, bezoek je het Po Lin-klooster en de hal van 10.000 Boeddha's. Vanaf Ngong Ping is het 20 minuten met de bus naar Tai O, liefkozend bekend als het Venetië van Hong Kong. Tai O is een van de weinige overgebleven plaatsen in Hong Kong waar je nog steeds paalwoningen boven het water kunt zien. Tai O was vroeger een grote gemeenschap, maar door de achteruitgang van de visserij-industrie is het, net als Venetië, nu vooral een toeristische bestemming, voor zowel buitenlandse bezoekers als Hong Kongers die ontsnappen aan de drukte van de stad. Tai O staat nog steeds bekend om zijn traditionele productie van garnalenpasta en om zijn kleurrijke vismarkt.
Vlieg door de lucht in de Ngong Ping 360-kabelbaan voor een verbazingwekkend vogelperspectief van enkele van de grootste natuurlijke en historische bezienswaardigheden van Hong Kong. Als u uit de kabelbaan stapt, wordt u begroet door het Ngong Ping Village van 1,5 hectare met een cultureel thema, waar een breed scala aan winkels en eetgelegenheden een heerlijke winkel- en eetervaring bieden.
Het afgelegen Po Lin-klooster, verborgen door weelderige bergen, werd een populaire attractie toen het buitengewone Tian Tan Boeddhabeeld (informeel bekend als de Grote Boeddha) in 1993 werd opgericht. Het Po Lin-klooster is een van de belangrijkste boeddhistische heiligdommen van Hong Kong en wordt ook wel ‘de boeddhistische wereld in het zuiden’ genoemd. Dit klooster is de thuisbasis van menig toegewijde monnik en is rijk aan kleurrijke manifestaties van boeddhistische iconografie en de aangename tuin is levendig met vogelgezang en bloemige geuren.
Tian Tan Buddha of de Big Buddha is het op een na grootste bronzen Boeddhabeeld voor buiten ter wereld. Deze majestueuze bronzen Boeddha, 34 meter hoog en op het noorden gericht om over het Chinese volk te kijken, trekt pelgrims uit heel Azië. De ogen, lippen, helling van het hoofd en de rechterhand, die omhoog is gebracht om iedereen tot zegen te zijn, zorgen samen voor een nederige diepte van karakter en waardigheid voor de enorme Boeddha, die 12 jaar in beslag nam. Beklim de 268 treden om dit opmerkelijke standbeeld van dichterbij te bekijken en te genieten van het weidse uitzicht op de bergen en de zee dat vanaf de basis te zien is.
Tai O is de thuisbasis van de Tanka-bevolking, een gemeenschap van vissers die al generaties lang hun huizen op palen boven de wadden van Lantau Island hebben gebouwd. Deze ongewone structuren zijn met elkaar verbonden en vormen een hechte gemeenschap die letterlijk op het water leeft. Hun betoverende wereld is een paradijs voor fotografen. De handmatig bediende ophaalbrug die de smalle beek overspant die de stad verdeelt, verving een door touw getrokken ‘veerboot’ die meer dan 85 jaar in bedrijf was.
Een bezoek aan Heritage Hotel, daterend uit 1902, dit gebouw was vroeger het Tai O politiebureau en een van de eerste politiebureaus gebouwd in de New Territories. Het is gelegen op een kleine heuvel naast de Tai O Ferry Pier. Het gebouw werd in 2012 nieuw leven ingeblazen en omgebouwd tot het Tai O Heritage Hotel. Het hotel beschikt over negen kamers en suites in koloniale stijl met uitzicht op zee en een restaurant op het dak dat Tai O-specialiteiten serveert. De omringende kanonnen, zoeklicht en wachttorens zijn allemaal gerestaureerd. Hier wordt je lunch geserveerd aan het einde van je tour.

- Opties voor openbaar vervoer zijn in de buurt aanwezig
- Kinderen moeten bij een volwassene op schoot zitten
- Reizigers moeten ten minste een gemiddelde conditie hebben

- Voor deze rondleiding moet je fysiek fit zijn. Je zult in de loop van de dag tussen 5 en 10 km lopen. Hoe ver je loopt zal afhangen van hoeveel lopen je wilt doen bij Tai O. Je zult in een langzaam tempo gaan, over vlak land, maar je moet in redelijke gezondheid verkeren. Als je de Big Buddha van dichtbij wilt bezoeken, moet je 268 treden kunnen beklimmen!
- Af en toe is de kabelbaan gesloten voor onderhoud. Als het is gesloten op de dag dat u wilt toeren, zal uw gids u de prijs van de kabeltreintickets terugbetalen en zult u in plaats daarvan de bus gebruiken.
- Informeer ons ook als u reist met kinderen jonger dan 12 jaar.
- Rondleidingen worden in het Engels gegeven, tenzij anders wordt gevraagd tijdens het boeken.

We had the most fabulous time with Alfred. He was well on time, friendly and enthusiastic about the day ahead. We went straight to the cable car station via the metro and were able to upgrade to a Crystal cabin which he helped us arrange. He took lots of photos for us and was very knowledgeable about all aspects of Hong Kong, past and present and great to chat to. The cable car ride is a must, as is Big Buddha and the Lotus Temple is beautiful. The bus ride to Tai O was comfortable and short and the village is very interesting. We enjoyed the boat trip and meal at the Hotel which is included and returned to our hotel a little tired but very happy. I can’t recommend this trip enough and would ask for Alfred again if we ever come back to Hong Kong.

We had an amazing day with our guide Alfred who was very knowledgeable and attentive and made the trip very enjoyable. Lantau is definitely worth a trip if you are in Hong Kong. The Big Buddha is a wonder, and the trip to Shek-O was also very interesting. Alfred showed us some different temples and explained the different religions and beliefs in detail. He also took lots of photos for us. Lunch was very good too. Our only issue was the listing, which we found misleading. We booked when we were already in Hong Kong so assumed that the price shown was in HK dollars, however it was actually in US dollars which we only realised when the cost appeared on our bank statement. Since we were in Hong Kong when we booked, and are UK based it never occurred to us that the price would be in US dollars, and the listing didn't show this - it just showed the dollar sign, not which dollars we would be paying. This made the cost a lot more than we had anticipated. Having said that, we had a great day, and would definitely recommend Alfred as a guide.

We had a fabulous day, we were very lucky to have Sinclair as our guide. He was amazing, he had some much knowledge, made the tour fun and he took lots of great pictures. He met us at our hotel and we took the underground train to the cable car. We had our own cable car and travelled up to the site of the Big Buddha. We climbed the steps to see the Buddha and also went inside. Sinclair talked us through the history. We then visited the monastery and temple before traveling by bus to the fishing village. We then took a boat around the harbor and searched for the white dolphin. We finished our day with a visit to the local shops and a delicious traditional meal. Sinclair made it a very memorable day.
