De levendige, vermiljoen vijf verdiepingen tellende pagode onderscheidt zich tussen de groene bomen als een symbool van de Tochoji-tempel. Het werd gebouwd in 806 door Kukai, de oprichter van Shingon sekte. De Grote Boeddha torent meer dan 10 meter lang en omhult je in zijn aanwezigheid. Op het tempelterrein is er ook een gebouw genaamd Rokkakudo, een geregistreerd cultureel eigendom van Fukuoka City. Compleet met een treurige kersenboom die majestueus bloeit in het voorjaar, kunt u de kleuren van de natuur ervaren. Je gids vertelt je alle hoogtepunten.
Het heiligdom van Kushida is naar verluidt het oudste heiligdom in Fukuoka. De god van de welvarende zaken en de levensduur bewaakt vanaf hier Hakata en is al sinds de oudheid geliefd bij de lokale bevolking. Men gelooft dat het water van de geestenbron dat opwelt van onder het hoofdheiligdom een lange levensduur geeft. Daarnaast is er een hefsteen genaamd de "Chikaraishi" die beroemde sumokampioenen hebben geheven, evenals festivaldrijvers die het hele jaar door worden tentoongesteld en een extra boost van Japanse charme geven. Stap in de 19e en vroege 20e eeuw in Hakata wonen. Maak kennis met de oude manier van leven en neem zelfs deel aan en maak kennis met enkele traditionele Hakata-ambachten zoals Hakata Dolls, Hakata Bariko, Hakata Yoyo en Hakata Music. In de souvenirhoek vindt u Hakata-ambachten en -specialiteiten, evenals beroemde zoetwaren en festivalartikelen.

Canal City Hakata is een groot winkel- en entertainmentcomplex dat zichzelf een 'stad in de stad' noemt. Attracties zijn onder meer ongeveer 250 winkels, cafés en restaurants, een theater, game center, bioscopen, twee hotels en een kanaal dat door het complex loopt.
Ohori Park is een historisch park dat oorspronkelijk functioneerde als een gracht voor het kasteel van Fukuoka. Tegenwoordig is het geliefd bij de lokale bevolking als een oase in het stadscentrum waar veel watervogels en schildpadden leven.
Dit is de enige brouwerij van Hakata met een geschiedenis van meer dan 140 jaar en is geregistreerd als een belangrijk cultureel bezit. Sake hier wordt gekenmerkt door zijn fruitige frisheid, en sommige gebruiken de lokale specialiteit van aardbeien. Je kunt ook lokale sake proeven die je hier alleen kunt proeven, zoals vers geperste "nieuwe" sake, dus waarom zou je de sake niet eens proberen?
Het eindpunt van deze tour. Hakata Station is een belangrijk treinstation in het zuiden van Japan en het grootste op het eiland Kyushu. Het dient als een toegangspoort tot Kyushu omdat het het eindpunt is van zowel de Sanyo Shinkansen-bullet-line naar Osaka, en bij uitbreiding de Tokaido Shinkansen naar Tokio.

I recently joined a private Hakata walking tour led by the fantastic guide Hide, and it was one of the highlights of my trip to Fukuoka! As a first-time visitor, I wanted an insightful introduction to the city's mix of serene green spaces and historical sites, and this tour delivered exactly that. We started at the beautiful Ohori Park, a peaceful urban oasis with its large central pond and a lovely 2km walking path perfect for jogging or relaxing. From there, we moved to the Fukuoka City Museum, where we went to see the Acient Egipt exhibit. Kushida Shrine in Hakata Ward, central Fukuoka, right on the shrine grounds is the Hakata History Museum, a small but fascinating exhibit dedicated to the shrine's history and the Yamakasa festival. Hide was friendly, fluent in English, and incredibly passionate – he tailored the pace perfectly for a solo traveler, answered all my questions. The tour felt personalized and relaxed, covering about 6-7 hours with plenty of photo stops. Highly recommend for anyone – especially solo travelers – wanting a deeper understanding of Fukuoka beyond the usual tourist spots. Kushida Shrine alone is worth the visit! 10/10 – book with Hide if you can!

We were met by our guide at the cruise port. Some companies ask you to meet them but not here. It was a lot of walking but we coveted lots of ground and saw everything as promised. The nice surprise was all our transportation and admissions were included. Buying lunch was our only expense. We were back on time so no stress. Great day. I would recommend this tour

Our day tour in Fukuoka with Miyuki was great! She took us to some great spots around the city, including the Buddha statue, Ohori Park, and some lovely gardens. She also took us to a great sushi restaurant that we really enjoyed. Miyuki was helpful in showing us how to use public transit, and she was accommodating when we made last-minute requests! Kinuyo took us on a full-day walking tour of Hakata, where we had arrived by cruise ship. She was friendly, knowledgeable and well organized, having contacted us beforehand with several lunch options and to adjust our visits to accommodate one of us with mobility issues. I highly recommend this tour…I felt that I was being introduced to Hakarta by a friend. Miyuki was very knowledgeable about her city and showed me the special places. Highly recommend this day trip. People who want to travel to Hakata/Fukoka city in the morning and travel to the next destination should definitely consider this. This merchant town has many good spot to visit and my guide Ms. Yoko Tateno was very polite and helpful and answer all my questions about the culture 🙂
