Geniet van een dag in Fátima met een privévoertuig en chauffeur. Het was een afgelegen plek, maar het was de Arabische overheersing die de ontwikkeling van de plaats markeerde en haar naam gaf. Volgens de legende werd de Tempeliersridder Gonçalo Hermingues, beter bekend als Traga-Mouros, tijdens de christelijke herovering verliefd op Fátima, een Moorse gevangene tijdens een hinderlaag. Als reactie op de liefde bekeerde de jonge vrouw zich tot het christendom en nam de naam Oureana aan. De stad ontwikkelde zich aanzienlijk na de verschijningen van Fátima, aan het begin van de 20e eeuw, en werd een van de grootste centra van Mariaverering in Portugal, wereldwijd erkend door de katholieke kerk. We visited the Fátima Sanctuary, and Lawrence was our tour guide. I highly recommend both the tour and Lawrence as a guide. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and facts of the sanctuary, and he was also very friendly and personable.

As expected, we had an excellent visit at Fatima. It was a special religious experience. The tour was made special by our driver, Tiago. We had chosen a short visit so we had to make the best use of our time. Not only was he an excellent tour guide, describing the details of the shrine and explaining where to visit, he was very entertaining during the drive to and from Fatima. Our driver, José, was excellent. He is fluent in Portuguese and English and he took us to see everything we wanted to see in Fatima plus other things we didn’t know about, which were among the best aspects of our visit. He had a lovely, clean vehicle that was big enough to hold our ample luggage. He picked us up on time from our hotel in Porto and after our Fatima visit, took us to a great lunch spot and then dropped us at a different hotel in Aveiro. It was an outstanding tour.
