Begin je avontuur in Kanchipuram, bekend om zijn oude tempels en levendige zijdeweeftraditie. Bezoek de Kailasanathar-tempel, beroemd om zijn prachtige stenen beeldhouwwerken en verbluffende architectonische ontwerp, en de Ekambareswarar-tempel. Mis in Kanchipuram de kans niet om te winkelen voor de iconische handgeweven zijden sari's van de stad, een bewijs van zijn rijke textielerfgoed. Nadat je jezelf hebt ondergedompeld in de culturele wonderen van Kanchipuram, ga je naar Mahabalipuram, een korte rit langs de schilderachtige kustweg. Hier bewonder je de Shore-tempel, een UNESCO-werelderfgoedlocatie die bekendstaat om zijn ingewikkelde beeldhouwwerken en adembenemende uitzichten op de zee. Verken de Pancha Rathas, vijf monolithische in rotsen uitgehouwen tempels die zijn ontworpen in de vorm van strijdwagens, elk met een unieke architecturale stijl. Zorg er ook voor dat je Arjuna's Penance ziet, een van de grootste bas-reliëfs ter wereld, met verschillende scènes uit de hindoeïstische mythologie.

De Ekambareswarar tempel, gelegen in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, is een van de oudste en meest vereerde Shiva tempels in India. Opgedragen aan Lord Shiva als Ekambaranathar, beschikt het over prachtige Dravidische architectuur, met een torenhoge gopuram (poort) en ingewikkelde sculpturen. De tempel staat bekend om zijn heilige mangoboom, waarvan wordt aangenomen dat hij meer dan 3.500 jaar oud is, en hij heeft een grote betekenis in Shaivite aanbidding. Het is een belangrijk bedevaartsoord, dat zowel liefhebbers als toeristen aantrekt.
Kailasanathar Tempel, gelegen in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, is een van de vroegste voorbeelden van Dravidische architectuur, daterend uit de 8e eeuw. Opgedragen aan Lord Shiva, is deze tempel opmerkelijk voor zijn prachtige ingewikkelde houtsnijwerk en serene ambiance. Het tempelcomplex beschikt over een reeks kleine heiligdommen, een unieke zandstenen structuur en prachtige sculpturen die verschillende godheden en mythologische scènes uitbeelden. Het wordt vaak geprezen om zijn architectonische schittering en is een belangrijk bedevaartsoord voor Shaivite-aanbidders.
Ineengedoken aan het zuidelijke uiteinde van Mamallapuram waren de Vijf Ratha's, verbazingwekkend genoeg, allemaal uitgehouwen uit enkele grote rotsen. Elk van deze prachtige 7e-eeuwse tempels was gewijd aan een hindoegod en is nu vernoemd naar een of meer van de Pandava's, de vijf helden-broers van de epische Mahabharata, of hun gemeenschappelijke vrouw, Draupadi. De ratha's waren verborgen in het zand totdat ze 200 jaar geleden door de Britten werden opgegraven. Ratha is Sanskriet voor 'wagen', en kan verwijzen naar de vorm van de tempels of naar hun functie als voertuigen voor de goden. Men denkt dat ze oorspronkelijk niet dienden als gebedshuizen, maar als architectonische modellen.
We bezoeken ook Arjuna’s Penance, een 100 voet x 45 voet bas reliëf waar een heel meesterwerk uit het Mahabharata epos is gesneden.
De volgende halte is bij Krishna’s Butterball, een merkwaardig gezicht van een bolvormige kei met een diameter van 5 meter die hachelijk op een helling zit en de wetten van Newton tart!
Staande als een prachtige vuist van rotsachtige elegantie met uitzicht op de zee, omringd door tuinen en verwoeste rechtbanken, symboliseert de twee torens tellende Shore Temple de hoogten van Pallava architectuur en de maritieme ambities van de Pallava koningen. Zijn kleine formaat verloochent zijn uitstekende proportie en de opperste kwaliteit van het houtsnijwerk, vele nu uitgehold tot vage impressionistische verfraaiingen. Gebouwd onder Narasimhavarman II in de 8e eeuw, het is de vroegste significante vrijstaande stenen tempel in Tamil Nadu.
