Stel je een dag voor waarop het schema oplost en Finland zich gewoon voor je ontvouwt. We beginnen in Helsinki en slaan de toeristische valstrikken over om de ware polsslag van de stad te vinden – de rustige majesteit van de Rock Church, de zoute bries in de South Harbour en die verborgen architectonische juweeltjes waar de meeste mensen vlak langs lopen. Het gaat niet om het aanvinken van vakjes; het gaat om het voelen van de balans tussen Scandinavisch design en wilde natuur die deze hoofdstad definieert. Daarna laten we de stad achter ons voor de kasseien van Porvoo. Dit is niet alleen een geschiedenisles; het is een zintuiglijke ervaring. Je ruikt de houtrook en gebrande koffie als we door smalle straatjes dwalen met okerrode pakhuizen en middeleeuwse huizen. We stoppen misschien voor een handgemaakte chocolade in een klein boetiekje of zoeken een rustig hoekje bij de rivier om te praten over hoe het leven hier eeuwenlang zo charmant onveranderd is gebleven. De kathedraal, gebouwd door Carl Ludvig Engel, aan de noordkant van het Senaatsplein, is het toneel van nationale en academische feestelijke diensten en een van de meest populaire toeristische bezienswaardigheden. De kerk maakt deel uit van het Empire-tijdperk in Helsinki en is een mijlpaal voor mensen die over zee aankomen. Het is het symbool van heel Helsinki geworden. Eerder heette de St. Nicolaaskerk en de Grote Kathedraal, de huidige hoofdkerk van het bisdom Helsinki werd voltooid in 1852. Beelden van de twaalf apostelen bewaken de stad vanaf het dak van de kerk. Tentoonstellingen in de crypte (Kirkkokatu 18), in de zomer ook een souvenirwinkel Cathedral Shop.
Als het Esplanade Park kon praten, zou het duizend verhalen te vertellen hebben. Sinds het begin van de 19e eeuw zijn paren verliefd geworden en gescheiden onder de bomen die langs beide kanten langs het park lopen. Mensen komen naar het park om rond te hangen, gezien te worden en gewoon de sfeer op te snuiven.
Het monument van de wereldberoemde componist Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) van Eila Hiltunen bevindt zich in het Sibelius-park. Het werd onthuld 7 september 1967. Het Sibelius Monument, dat lijkt op orgelpijpen, is gemaakt van gelast staal met meer dan 600 pijpen en met de buste van de componist aan één kant. Het monument is een van de populairste standbeelden van Helsinki en een van de meest bekende toeristische attracties.
Voltooid in 1868 in de wijk Katajanokka van Helsinki, is de Uspenski-kathedraal de grootste orthodoxe kerk in West-Europa. Met zijn gouden koepels en rode bakstenen gevel is de kerk een van de duidelijkste symbolen van de Russische impact op de Finse geschiedenis.
De oude binnenstad van Porvoo is een charmante en populaire bestemming voor dagtochten. De kronkelende straatjes en mozaïekachtige binnenplaatsen weerspiegelen de middeleeuwse geschiedenis van de stad. Tegenwoordig zijn de smalle geplaveide straatjes bekleed met charmante cafés, restaurants, boetieks en musea, gehuisvest in historische houten gebouwen met verschillende kleuren. De rode houten pakhuizen langs de rivier dateren honderden jaren en zijn het herkenningspunt van de stad. Het hart van de stad is de indrukwekkende kathedraal bovenop de heuvel. Porvoo heeft 50.000 inwoners.
De kathedraal was de locatie van de opening van het eerste Dieet van Finland op 28 maart 1809, waar Finland werd uitgeroepen tot een autonoom Groothertogdom, met de keizer van Rusland als de Groothertog van Finland.

Was picked up from airport and dropped off at my hotel. Everything was seamless cause I had my luggage with me and couldn’t check into hotel till after 3pm. My guide was knowledgeable and showed me all around Porvoo and told me its history. Beautiful old town about 45 minutes from Helsinki. I felt comfortable from the beginning, & loved the tour. Perfect day in Helsinki and Porvoo thanks to Sergio. We were met at the port on time and then had the best day in Helsinki. Cruise stops give you the best of, and today was perfect. Porvoo was beautiful and very quaint and lovely. Our driver Michael met us at port on time in super clean Porsche and was the best driver. Great car and guide. Parvoo is a charming little town but not sure its worth the 45min drive each way. Should have spent more time in Helsinki walking around with the guide.
