Ervaar Mylapore: verrijkende wandeltocht
Beschrijving
Tijdens deze wandeling bezoekt u de tempel in het gezelschap van onze deskundige gids. We zullen ook door de omliggende gebieden lopen, waar je Mylapore in al zijn drukke chaos kunt zien. De juweliers, zijdehandelaren, groente- en fruitverkopers en de bloemenverkopers in de bazaars zorgen voor een kleurrijke achtergrond voor de tempel. De wandeling voert ons door kleine straatjes met oude huizen, via zijden winkels, winkels die muziek verkopen en religieuze memorabilia, 'kutcheri' auditoria, enz. Bezoek de Kapaleeshwara-tempel, de Santhome-kerk en wandel door de zijstraten van Mylapore tijdens deze 3-uur durende tour. De tour is meestal te voet met een korte strook in een auto-riksja (lokale tuk-tuk) die wordt geregeld en opgenomen in de tournee en die eindigt met Zuid-Indiase versnaperingen.

Mylapore is - en is in zekere zin altijd al geweest - het religieuze en culturele epicentrum van de Tamil-bevolking. Het dorp Mylapore dateert van vóór Chennai. Aan deze eeuwenoude bloeiende zeehaven stond ooit een grote kusttempel die aan Shiva was gewijd, totdat de Portugezen halverwege de zestiende eeuw arriveerden. Ze vernietigden de tempel, creëerden een Portugese kolonie aan de kust en duwden Mylapore aan land, waar het vandaag de dag nog steeds staat. De Shiva-tempel werd 300 jaar geleden opnieuw gebouwd en wordt de Kapaleeswara-tempel genoemd. Het is een goed voorbeeld van de pure Dravidische stijl, met gopurams en mandapams, en is het epicentrum waarrond het Mylapore-gebied is gebouwd. San Thome Church, ook bekend als St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica en International Shrine of Saint Thomas is een rooms-katholieke minor basiliek in Santhome, in de stad Chennai, India. Aan het einde van de tour stoppen we bij de populaire Saravana Bhavan voor snacks en koffie.
