Er is een totaal van 109 grotten die kunnen worden bereikt door een opeenvolging van uit de rotsen gehouwen vorderingen. De Kanheri-grotten zijn een groep grotten en uitgehouwen monumenten in een enorme basaltlaag gesneden in de bossen van het Sanjay Gandhi National Park, op het eiland Salsette in de westelijke buitenwijken van Mumbai, India. Ze bevatten boeddhistische sculpturen en reliëfgravures, schilderijen en inscripties, daterend uit de 1e eeuw v.Chr. Tot de 10e eeuw CE. Kanheri komt uit het Sanskriet Krishnagiri, wat zwarte berg betekent.

Thoroughly fascinating tour! The history of the building of the caves and changes through the centuries is remarkable and the tour is a must see for Mumbai. The Kanheri Caves tour was lovely. My driver Dinesh and tour guide Ravi were very kinda ND shared a wealth of knowledge about the history of the site and Mumbai. I felt very safe as a solo traveler. A must see destination when visiting Mumbai

I highly recommend this tour with Ravi! He was so knowledgeable and passionate, answered all my questions and walked us through at a good pace to get to truly experience it all. I learned so much, and enjoyed the beauty of the caves and the views out over the park. Rovi and Lucas were great. They together made the drive to the site smooth and interesting. Rovi did a great job explaining the history of the caves. The caves weren’t super crowded and we really enjoyed being able to explore at our own pace. Highly recommend!

I took the tour on a Sunday morning in Monsoon with a charming and very knowledgeable guide called Kavitha. Kavitha gave an excellent explanation of the history of the caves and was able to answer all my questions. Whilst there were a lot of visitors it was wonderful to find an oasis of nature in Mumbai.
