Volgens de oude Egyptische religie was Elephantine de woonplaats van Khnum, de ramhoofdige god van de staar, die de wateren van de Nijl bewaakte en bestuurde vanuit grotten onder het eiland. Hij werd hier aanbeden als onderdeel van een late triade van Egyptische goden. Deze "Elephantine Triad" omvatte Satis en Anuket. Satis werd vanaf zeer vroege tijden aanbeden als oorlogsgodin en beschermer van deze strategische regio van Egypte. Toen ze werd gezien als een vruchtbaarheidsgodin, personifieerde ze de overvloedige jaarlijkse overstroming van de Nijl, die werd geïdentificeerd als haar dochter, Anuket. De cultus van Satis is ontstaan in de oude stad Aswan. Later, toen de triade werd gevormd, werd Khnum geïdentificeerd als haar partner en werd daarom beschouwd als de vader van Anuket. Zijn rol in mythen veranderde later en een andere godheid kreeg zijn taken bij de rivier toegewezen. In die tijd stelde zijn rol als pottenbakker hem in staat een plicht te krijgen bij het creëren van menselijke lichamen.

Elephantine Island is a less frequently visited destination because its temples are not that spectacular. But we were accompanied by an expert Egyptologist, Aida by name, who explained to us in great detail about the history of those temples and everything that was in that area. Because the island has 3 parts of which we only visited the temples. The excursion lasts a maximum of 2 hours and not 5 hours as it was in the description on Viator.

It's too expensive (almost USD 50) for a tour to a place tha has little to offer. If you want to have a good experience go to Philae (Agilika Island) to visit the Temple of Isis. Just skip Elephantine Island and save your money and your time.

First we had a week in Cairo, then we flew to Luxor. Then we took a luxury cruise by riverboat up to Aswan, where we visited Elephantine Island, which could not bring us closer to the origins of humans in Africa.
