I am a U.S. rated pilot with commercial license, as well as Flight Instructor, Instrument Instructor, Multi-Engine, Sea Plane, Airframe and Engine Mechanic, and several ground instructor ratings. I wanted to experience this training while I was in Japan. I also looked into the Delta Airlines (full motion) Simulator in Atlanta. I watched several YouTube videos of people "flying" this simulator and noticed all of the "pilots" used the control yoke in making abnormally large movements. I have flown multi-engine large aircraft (over 12,500 lbs) and have never seen such large control inputs. That made me suspect that actually flying this simulator was not as authentic as the real thing. I sent an email to them and was assured that it was in fact very real, and indicated that the instructor somehow limited input effectiveness to avoid a dangerous situation by the customer. I paid extra for a 150 minute training block and specifically asked for FMC (computer input for airplanes),GATE Taxing (Ground Transportation),Engine Start modules. The total cost was Y59,400. I also asked about any logbook entry for a ground training devise and was told that no logbook entry would be permitted for this simulator. I decided that I would like the training and experience just to learn something new, so I reserved a slot. My experience was as follows: The instructor was a very pleasant young pilot originally from Turkiye that trained in the United States. He spoke fairly good English but I had to ask him to repeat himself multiple times in the simulator to hear him over the simulated wind/engine noise. Having headsets would have aided our communications. He had several ratings but I don't think he had an instructors rating and he said he had never piloted a 777. He knew the systems well but unless I asked about the procedures in detail he really didn't "teach" me any procedures. I want to stress that he was an enjoyable person to talk to about his home country, which I had previously visited. We had a lot of time for small talk because the simulator had to be "rebooted" about a half a dozen times, each of which took a long time. Several systems were having problems. Most notable to me was the control inputs required grossly exaggerated movements to get the simulators attitude indicator to respond to the movement. I ultimately gave up on trying to hand fly and asked him to concentrate on the automation and autopilot. I think that this simulator is probably useful for a pilot who wants to learn procedures for the systems and maybe emergency checklists. It would help those who want to learn "button ology". Once the autopilot was engaged everything operated as you would expect the real thing to do. I have to say that I have watched numerous 777 YouTube simulators that you could do everything this simulator can do, although you have to do it on a computer with a mouse not a full size cockpit. I'm not sure how much actual time I got since we had so many failures where the simulator was idle. I may have gotten more than I paid for. But the extra modules were really not addressed, other than we went through one engine start and pushback demonstration. The FMS was demonstrated by the pilot without any real training. I rated this experience only poor. I understand that a non pilot would probably think this was thrilling and something he/she could impress their friends with for many hours. In that case they would feel it would be a 5 star worthy review.

Complicated but fun. This activity brings new respect to pilots everywhere. Clean atmosphere. Served a drink and a small treat.
